A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT 1 Hello Quilters! Happy New Year! Here it is, already January of 2017, and I am still working on my to do list for I hope you and your families and friends have had a wonderful holiday. Now we look forward to the long days of indoor activity that we all love. May you have many happy quilting days in I hope you have thought about projects to bring to our quiltin on January 5, 6, and 7. We will open up on Thursday at 4 p.m., so bring your machines, fabrics, notions, ideas, snacks, and whatever else you can carry to the meeting. You will be able to leave things in the room overnight and we will open up again on Friday morning at 9:30 (and again at 9:30 on Saturday) so you can jump right in to getting things done. Maybe you have UFOs or a quilt you are getting ready for the show. Don t forget to bring some Show and Tell to share on Thursday, when we will take a break about 7 p.m. for a quick meeting and then get back to sewing. The tops for the Advocacy Quilts that the group has been working on are done, and soon will be passed on to Allison Wilbur for quilting. We are excited about sharing them with you and the public this spring. I don t know about you, but I have so many things lined up that I have started or want to start, I will have a very busy year. For now, I am happy that I finished gifts on time and look forward to getting back to some things that have been waiting for me. Come stitch with us on Jan 5! Ruth Sears, President

2 Quilters by the Sea Calendar January 5, 6, 7: Quilt-In! Enjoy some uninterrupted time make progress on your projects (UFOs, anyone?) and get to know your fellow guild members better. Come to St. Barnabas for any amount of time you can or for all three days. Our meeting room will be set up for sewing, and you can leave your supplies in the room overnight. Bring food to share (potluck lunch and snacks), swap quilting tips, work on a community service project if you like, and enjoy seeing what everyone is making. It s always more fun to quilt with company! Thursday, January 5, 4:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m. (monthly business meeting at 7:00 p.m.) Friday, January 6, 9:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 9:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. (quilt show committees meet at 10:00 a.m.) There is no fee, but donations to defray the cost of renting the hall will be greatly appreciated. February 2: Sandy Reynolds Quilting Journey February 4: The first workshop of 2017! Chris Bagley's One-Block Wonder at the Portsmouth Public Library, from 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. $35 workshop fee. May 4: Hoffman Challenge Trunk Show with Laura Cooke; Annual Meeting June 1: Ice Cream Social and UFO Challenge Results with Chris Bagley There will be a meeting of the show committees at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 7, at the Quilt-In. 5 UFOs PHDs OMG! 10 ways to save 10 minutes this week, which you can then use to quilt: 1. If you can pat your head and rub your stomach at the same time, you should be able to brush your hair and teeth simultaneously. This may save 10 minutes in only a day or two, depending on how thorough your grooming and oral hygiene are. 2. Skip brushing your hair and your teeth altogether. You should be able to get away with this on the weekend. 3. Switch from button-down blouses to pullovers. This should add up to about 10 minutes in buttoning and unbuttoning saved in the course of a week. Ditto for switching from lace-ups to loafers. 4. Install a self-feeder for the cat and/or a door flap for the dog. (The time expended in doing this does not count, because you will get someone else to do it for you.) 5. Everyone makes jokes about letting the dog clean the dishes, but hey, now that I think about it Instead of making coffee every morning, borrow a 50-cup urn and leave it on all week. This saves on those expensive coffee beans, too, because by Friday you ll only need a few tablespoons of whatever s left in there to get you going. 7. Forget what the exercise gurus tell you. Park as close to everything as possible. You know you want to. 8. Ask a friend to take the XBox/Gameboy/Nintendo/PlayStation away and not bring it back until June. (If you re really serious, consider suspending your Netflix account as well. House of Cards will still be there when you come back.) 9. Don t bother to separate the laundry. Tell everyone, Pink is my new signature color. 10. Two words: Chinese take-out. (Maybe that s three words, but I m going to save myself 10 minutes by not looking it up.) ~ C.H. 6 Quilters by the Sea Meeting Minutes December 1, 2016 ~ St. Barnabas Church, Portsmouth, RI Happy Holidays! Program: We began the evening with appetizers followed by our business meeting. Thank you, Donna and Donna, for organizing our food, and thank you, Dave Bessette, for our music. President s Report: There is a Modern Quilt Guild quilt exhibit in the public library in Bristol. Treasurer's Report: We donated $25 and $58 to NEQM. Boutique of the Month: Several items were turned in this month. Marilyn Ferkinhoff won the door prize. Membership: Two new members this month and one guest; 50 members present tonight. Programs: January is our Quilt-In on the 5th, 6th and 7th. February is Sandy Reynolds Quilting journey. February workshop is Chris Bagley s One-Block Wonder. In March we have Kathy Graves trunk show, and April is the quilt show prep. Strip of the Month: Marilyn Ferkinhoff also won the green strips this month! Hospitality: Thank you to everyone who brought in appetizers and desserts. Next month is the Quilt-In, and please bring goodies should you feel so inclined. Quilt Show: We have the school for April 21 through 23. We can get into the school on Friday at 9 a.m. We will have another show meeting in January. Show and Tell: We had several members with show and tell items. Some were gifts for people, some were gifts they had received, and we had several Christmas quilts, wall hangings, and decorations. Raffle Quilt: We made $1,200 on the raffle quilt. Sarafina drew the winning ticket belonging to Abby Goss. After the raffle drawing, we indulged in desserts and mingled with other members. Respectfully submitted, Jennie Nestlerode, Secretary 6
