A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello Quilters! As we head into fall, we have a few months yet of beautiful sunny and still warm weather, so go out and enjoy it while you can. Get started on those UFO s that you have found hiding under current projects or start working on those items that will be gifts for the holidays. Many of you know Dotty Blair, who will be our speaker in October. She promises to bring a variety of quilt projects to share and we can all look forward to having a great presentation. We are starting the planning for the quilt show and hopefully you all have something you are getting ready to register. Each time we have a show there is so much inspiration for others when we see the amazing work being shared. I am sure this next one will be just as enjoyable as all the others. The NEQM is still working to replace the heating/air conditioning system in their building, and we will have a jar for donations once again at the October meeting. We were able to send a small donation last month and hope you can donate a few dollars this month to send along. Having our own quilt museum in New England allows all of us to learn and share so much about quilting within a reasonable distance, and I hope you can support this worthy cause. Mittens will be available for purchase at this and the November meeting, so bring your wallet and get some holiday shopping done! See you on October 6th, and keep stitching, Ruth Sears, President 1
2 Quilters by the Sea Calendar October 6: Dotty Blair Trunk Show: Confessions of a Short-Attention- Span Quilter Dotty has won ribbons at The Vermont Quilt Festival and at Images in Lowell, MA, and numerous local awards. Locally Dotty has taught informal quilting workshops and have been president of two guilds and has a longarm quilting business. She makes traditional quilts (with her own sometimes untraditional fabric and color choices) as well as more innovative art quilts. Dotty includes the humorous stories that are attached to some of her quilts it is best not to take ourselves or our creations too seriously and shares about 30 quilts utilizing a wide variety of techniques: hand piecing, machine piecing, hand quilting, machine quilting, beading, embroidery, and much more. Note: October workshop with Chris Bagley has been cancelled. November 3: Diana Annis Trunk Show: Redwork Workshop with Diana Annis: Redwork, November 5. Fee TBA; minimum 10 students. I know there is more out there and we will continue to collect and organize what we have as the year goes on. Let Ruth know if you are willing to help out with this valuable project. Raffle on the Road Do you know of a great shop, event, or other location where we could display our guild raffle quilt and sell tickets? 7 Quilters by the Sea Meeting Minutes September 8, 2016 ~ St. Barnabas Church, Portsmouth, RI Program: Welcome our own Chris Bagley! Chris has been teaching a UFO class for the past few years. Bill Murray said Don't let stress take over. Stress is the death of art. You need to make time for you to sew. Chris loves to read all the articles in magazines and one tip was if you have way to many seam rippers it is because you don't have one that is sharp enough. Common aspects of UFO collections: Do you still like it? Why did you put it away? Does it still have all the fabric and directions to finish it? It is OK to change fabrics. If you don't like the way the quilt looks it is OK to change it. Orphan blocks go great on canvas and make great gifts. When you get home and find your UFO's, put them all together and think about them in order of interest. Pin a note to the UFO of exactly what it needs. Set a goal for each quilt. Start a journal; it will help motivate you. Pledging to the guild will also help motivate you. We then went around the room and guild members either showed us or told us about their UFO's. Please give your pledge slips back to Chris. If you need to give your UFO as a gift before the June meeting, please bring it in before you give it away or take a photo of it. After a 10-minute break, the business meeting began. President: Ruth wanted to give a public thanks to Catherine Hawkes, our newsletter editor. Also a thank-you to Allison Wilbur for staying on and helping with programs. If anyone would like to help work on programs with Sarah Sullivan, please let Ruth or Allison know. We are still looking for a historian. If you are interested in working on the Advocacy Project, please sign up on the sheet or see Ruth. We received an offer in the mail to buy Quilter s Dream batting as a guild at a discount; a group of people is interested so Ruth will put together some more information. Treasurer s Report: Please see the newsletter for budget pie charts. We have $12,574 as of July 2016 in all of our accounts. If you have any questions, see Martha. Quilt Show: Co-chairs Susan Rood and Janet Roche announced that we have the Portsmouth Middle School April 21-23, so the show will be Saturday and Sunday and set up will be Friday. We can set up during the day as it is the end of school break. Please see the clipboard that went around to sign up for committees. Raffle Quilt: As of right now, the raffle quilt has only broken even. It will go back to Ryco and then to Just Quilts. If you know of any venue to bring the quilt to, let Susan Rood know. Community Service: We will be continuing projects from last year. Raffle Baskets: Please see the raffle basket donation sheet that went around and bring back your donations. Program: We formed a large circle and Ruth asked questions about our quilting and sewing experiences and interests. If the answer to the question was yes, then you stepped into the circle and could see who else shared the same interest. Strip of the Month: Tonight we had 34 red strips, Karen Jameson won. Boutique items: If you have something, please turn it it in! Barbara Niekierk won. Membership: Door prize was won by Janet Roche. 71 members have renewed. If you forget your name tag, it will cost a $1. (Continued on next page.) 7
8 (Minutes, continued.) Special NEQM Raffle: Lesley Addlem, Catherine Hawkes, Pat Giarrusso, and Sarah Sullivan each won a pair of donated passes to the New England Quilt Museum. Quilt-Away: This year s Quilt-Away will be Oct 31 to Nov 2nd. The cost is $156 for the two nights at the Bayside Resort. If you want to go, please let Nancy Burgess know BEFORE you book a room. Programs: October will be Dotty Blair. Chris will be doing a one block wonder on October 1st and 29th, the first class will just be cutting and the second class will be setting your blocks. November will be redwork and we will have a workshop associated with it on Nov 5th. Show and Tell: A variety of quilts were shown including baby quilts, a table runner made with fabric from France, larger quilts, a Halloween wall hanging, a Kaffe quilt challenge, and few small quilts. Respectfully submitted, Jennie Nestlerode Out and About Shows, Workshops, Shop Hops, and More (Submit items you think we d like to know about!)
