A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Did everyone enjoy Nancy Chong s talk and trunk show? I know I did! I love Hawaiian quilts so I took both her classes. Needle turn applique isn t as scary anymore. By the second class my stitches were looking pretty good now to work on a straighter line. It s nice having the warmer weather, to see the trees budding and some flowers starting to show. I definitely prefer this time of year over winter, but I do really like the warmth of summer. My dog is enjoying this time of year he stays outside longer. Don t forget, Allison is vending in May. We also have Just Quilts vending in June. Remember to bring in your quilt to the May meeting if you want it to be considered for the New England Quilt Museum summer exhibit. We will vote as a guild on which quilt will represent us. You can t buy happiness, but you can buy fabric. And that s pretty close! Donna Bozeman, President 1
2 May 7: June 4: Quilters by the Sea Calendar General Meeting, 7:00, St. Philomena School, Portsmouth Program: RESCHEDULED FROM THE MARCH SNOW DAY! Nancy Messier Art Quilt Trunk Show General Meeting, 7:00, St. Barnabas Church Program: Elections and introduction of new officers Directions to St. Philomena School 324 Cory's Lane, Portsmouth For May Meeting From Bristol and points north: Take Route 136 or Route 114 south to the Mt. Hope Bridge. Cross the Mt. Hope Bridge from Bristol into Portsmouth. Bear right at the end of the bridge onto Route 114/West Main Road. At the next light (about 1.2 miles), bear right to stay on Route 114. After another 1.5 miles, turn right onto Cory s Lane. St. Philomena School is about a half mile down Cory s Lane on the left. From Newport and points south: Take Route 114/Broadway north about 7-½ miles (measuring from downtown Newport). Turn left onto Cory s Lane (just past Hedly Street on the right). St. Philomena School is about a half mile down Cory s Lane on the left. For the directionally-impaired: Start at St. Barnabas, which you know how to get to. Go north on 138, cut across on Hedly Street, and zig-zag to Cory s Lane. The 2015 QBS Bus Shop Hop has been planned for Saturday, June 13th and you are invited to come along on a really fun trip. The trip will visit three large quilt shops, all of which have offered a 20% discount. We are using a different bus company this year so that we will be assured of getting into the home park and ride lot without having to walk any distance. The price remains the same as last year at $35 for each person. The plan is to leave at 8:00 AM from the Tiverton Park and Ride on Fish Road right off Rte. 24 and be back by 5:00 PM. When you join us on the trip, you will find out where we are going, but for now, it is a big dark secret. Usually, passengers are told to bring along a bag lunch. However, this year there is a choice because in two of the cities, there are eating establishments within a block of the quilt shop. A sign-up sheet will be at the next QBS meeting, or send a check for $35 made out to QBS to Susan Rood. 2

Winners: This month we did Block of the Month for both March and April, since we did not meet in March due to snow. March BOM winner was Carol Garvey, and April winner was Marilyn Ferkinhoff. Fabric of the month (yellow) was won by Ann Zvanovec. Door prizes (fabric, NEQM pass) were won by Donna Chaves, Martha Nadeau, and Lorna Cogswell, with an additional prize donated by Nancy Chong which went to Nancy Devillers. Show and Tell: Work was shared by Judy Messenger, Serafina Deascentis, Debby Timby, Carol Hutchinson, Bridget Murphy, Jean Conwell, Sue Bates, Ruth Sears, Donna Bozeman, and Sandy Reynolds. 5
6 Minutes (continued) Program: Nancy Chong, from Pacific Rim Quilt Company in Washington came to share her quilts and her story. She told about how Hawaiian Quilts came to be as well as some steps still used today to make the traditional central designs which are appliqued to another, usually solid fabric. She explained needle turn applique, the batting and fabrics used, as well as the process for cutting and laying out the applique on the background. She showed some examples of two fabric applique, using similar techniques to the Hawaiian quilting, to demonstrate how those are made. She will conduct workshops on Hawaiian quilting on Friday, and Two fabric applique on Saturday at the Portsmouth Library. The meeting adjourned about 9:00 pm. Nancy was vending some supplies for members to purchase. Respectfully submitted, Ruth Sears, Secretary 6
7 April 9 ~ Nancy Chong tells us everything we never knew about Hawaiian quilts... We had a chance to see for ourselves that Nancy is an amazing applique expert! Lots of guild members enjoyed Nancy s Friday and Saturday workshops. 7
8 May 7 Program ~ 7:00 p.m. ~ St. Philomena School NOTE LOCATION! Nancy Messier Art Quilt Trunk Show Nancy studied art at Syracuse University, received her MFA from Case Western Reserve, and studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art. She taught art at Barrington Middle School for 35 years. Nancy began quilting in the mid-1970s, starting off with traditional themes, learning all the rules, and following some. After a time Nancy switched to teddy bears and professionally made teddy bears for 20 years. When she rediscovered quilting, about eight or nine years ago, Nancy discovered art quilting and found she could throw out all the rules! She does everything with fabric: paints it, mutilates it, draws on it, stitches it, folds it. Ideas come from everywhere; she uses lots of photographs she takes and draws inspiration from everything around her. Nancy says she is addicted to trying new ideas. If she sees something in a magazine or online she tries it. This means she doesn't have any one style with her quilts, just as with her art. If she were to identify an overall theme, it would be that she considers herself a colorist. She uses every color of the rainbow in every quilt. This is achieved by using lots of fabrics. It is not unusual for her to use 100 fabrics in even a small quilt. Her large quilts are mainly traditional and her minis are mainly art quilts. In her trunk show, Nancy will share her art quilt minis and tell us how she achieves her fantastic results. In everyone s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. ~ Albert Schweitzer 8
