1 Mt. Pleasant Quilting Company SEPTEMBER DECEMBER 2012 Dear Quilters, I'm writing this Fall newsletter on July 27th. Seems a bit early doesn't it, but to get it to the printers and to you on time, it was a necessity. But I also had to write it early as I'm going on a trip with my grandkids to Yellowstone for almost the complete month of August. We're very excited! Probably the most grandiose thing to write about is our 10th Anniversary Celebration Sale - Sept. 20th - 22nd. My, how these 10 years have flown! We've certainly shared a lot of laughs, tears, worries, concerns, happy times, and of course the love and addictive world of quilting with each other! Our Anniversary Celebration Sale events are listed further on in this newsletter, but I do want to tell you about our Promotion that will be happening throughout our 10th year. As you know, you receive 10% off every purchase when you walk through our doors. (Either 10% punched on your buyer card or 10% as a guild member.) Well... on the 10th of every month for the entire year (8 out of 12 months at least, as it falls on a Sunday or Monday when we are closed 4 times), we will choose either a book, pattern, notion, fabric line, or kit, etc., and on that day you will receive an extra 10% off. That's why we are calling it the event! You can buy it on the 10th while you're in the shop, or call and purchase it on the 10th. Our t-shirt contest winners were: Cathy Judkins with the saying, "Quilting sews friendships stitch by stitch", and Janice Spiotta: "I feed my soul by the stitches I sew". T-shirts can be purchased with these quotes on them. One dollar of your purchase of a t-shirt goes to Cystic Fibrosis. Contest winner Christina Robison's saying is imprinted on our staff t-shirts: "Mt. Pleasant Quilting...where it's sew nice!" Quilt Away Weekend: Oct. 19th - 21st. Balance due Sept. 14th. Full, but can still call the shop to be put on the waiting list as life always seems to get in the way and we have "newbie's" every year. Quilt Away Weekend: Nov. 2nd - 4th. Balance due Sept. 26th. Full, but can still call the shop as stated above. Forks and Needles: Balance due: Sept. 22nd. We are having a fantastic response to our 65 Roses pillowcase drive. We started this mission in honor of employee Lisa Miskell s daughter, Meghann, who has Cystic Fibrosis. We have received 260 pillowcases in about 4 weeks time! Why is it called 65 Roses? Here's the story: Several years ago, a mom was talking on the phone regarding her son's Cystic Fibrosis. He was very young and had not been told he had Cystic Fibrosis. He thought she said 65 roses and asked why she was talking about that. Hence, The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation adopted 65 roses as their logo. Cystic Fibrosis patients can be in the hospital for weeks at a time throughout the year for "tune-ups." We decided it would be a great mission to give pillowcases to these patients to brighten up their sterile hospital room. You get to fill out a ticket for every pillowcase you bring in. For every 65 pillowcases, we draw a ticket for a $25.00 gift certificate-. We ve had 4 lucky winners so far! As I always write in every newsletter because it's so true...you are all fun, friendly, fantastic women and men! I sincerely thank you for attending classes and shopping at Mt. Pleasant Quilting. If you ve always wanted to learn how to quilt, there couldn t be a better time. Learn basic rotary cutting skills and quilting techniques. (ex: proper border and binding skills, correct ¼ seam allowance, 4 patch construction, etc.) while making this tablerunner. You ll find success and be on your way to the wonderful and addictive world of quilting! Teacher: Linda Coats Class Fee: $20.00 Charm School Camp III Saturday, Sept. 15th See write-up under special events. Gather the Passing Seasons 4th Wednesday of the month for 12 months, starting Wed. Sept 26th. 10:00-3:00, OR 4th Thursday of the month for 12 months, starting Thursday, Sept. 27th, 10:00-3:00 Twelve appliqué blocks to celebrate each passing month. Inspired by traditional and folk art quilts. Stitch these in cotton or wool. Wool kits available. Teacher: Sandi Orologio Class Fee: $7.50 Cattails and Pumpkins Saturday, Sept. 29th, 10:00-3:00 Cattails and pumpkins seem to be the right combination to make this 28" x 32" wall quilt. Flying geese, hour glass blocks and appliqué techniques will complete your project. Teacher: Pam Keefe Class Fee: $20.00 Amish With A Twist BOM 1st Wednesday of every month for 6 months, starting Oct. 3rd, 10:00-1:00, OR 1st Wednesday of every month for 6 months, starting Oct. 3rd, 2:00-5:00, OR 1st Wednesday of every month for 6 months, starting Oct. 3rd, 6:00-9:00 You will love this block of the month program if you like the look of Amish quilts,. A beautiful palette of solids, but the traditional black background will make this classic 88 x 105 classic Amish quilt. It was designed for the beginner quilter, but will be enjoyed by the experienced quilter too. Piecing and appliqué - either machine or hand, will complete this treasure. Kit available. Teacher: Barbara Miller Class fee: $7.50 'Lil Twister Christmas Tree Friday, Oct. 5th, 10:00-3:00, OR Saturday, Oct. 6th, 10:00-3:00 Want to have a Christmas tree that won't shed it's needles? Make this beautiful 38" x 50" wallhanging to adorn your home. The 'Lil Twister ruler makes this a snap. Imagine starting out with squares and ending up with a "little twist" in the process. 3 Page 3 Midi Bag Tuesdays, Oct. 23rd & 30th, 6:00-9:00 OR Tuesday, Oct. 30th, 10:00-3:00 Simple technique, great bag! Just fuse squares to printed interfacing and stitch on the lines! Intersections match effortlessly! Approximately 8" square bottom and 12" high. Pre-cut kit available if you choose. Teacher: Linda Coats Class Fee: $20.00 Signs of Fall ROM 4th Wednesday of the month for 5 months starting Oct. 24th, 6:00-9:00 This 36" x 42" wall hanging will be a combination of autumn blocks depicting the signs of Fall: ex: pumpkins, leaves, apples, etc. along with traditional pieced quilting blocks. It will be a treasure you will want to display each year when the fall season arrives. Teachers: Barb Miller Class Fee: $7.50 SueNami Saturday, Oct. 27th, 10:00-3:00 Join us to make a spectacular Hunter's Star quilt using an unusual Hunter's Star medallion-style layout. The quilt is made using Debbie Tucker's Rapid Fire Hunter's Star ruler, which is a quick and easy method for making Hunter's Star blocks without ANY "Y" seams!!! The finished quilt is 68" x 68". Teacher: Debbie Thomas Class Fee: $20.00 Petals of My Heart II 1st Tuesday of every month, starting Nov. 6th for 6 months, 10:00-1:00, OR 1st Tuesday of every month, starting Nov. 6th for 6 months, 6:00-9:00 Bring the unique beauty of North American wildflowers into your home with McKenna Ryan's artful arrangement of seventeen botanical species from trilliums to wild bleeding hearts to wild columbine with an owl, squirrel and rabbit thrown in. This will be our 3rd McKenna Ryan series- Barb loves the technique and finished products. (Just can't get enough of it!) You can make one or all. Blocks can be framed individually or made into a 51" x 56" wall quilt. Kits available. If you're one of these gals, come to this class and let Linda, the paper piecing queen, make you a believer. The rest of you love it, so I know you'll be here! A new pattern from MH Designs. 4 MT. PLEASANT QUILTING COMPANY Page 4 I've Been Framed Friday, Nov. 9th, 10:00-3:00, OR Wednesday, Nov. 14th, 5:30-9:00 Want to set a great looking table for the holidays? This class will teach you how to make beautiful mitered corner napkins, placemats, an/or tablecloth. They look professionally made! I learned this method at Quilt Market in May. You can custom make the correct size tablecloth you want for your table (rectangle or square). Bring the measurements of your table, plus the "hang-over" amount that you want. I'm thrilled with my completed projects. Make for yourself or for gifts. Teacher: Barb Miller Class Fee: Free (if you bring a new children's book/ books to be given to needy families over the holidays.) Machine Quilting 101 Saturday, Nov. 10th, 10:00-3:00 This class will cover some basic quilting techniques for finishing smaller projects with your own domestic sewing machine. Techniques will include stitch-in-the-ditch, quarter-inch outline quilting, echo quilting, tissue paper quilting, and a brief introduction to free motion quilting. A great primer for all skill levels. Teacher: Penny Marble Class Fee: $20.00 Twilling Thursday, Nov. 15th, 10:00-3:00, OR Tuesday, Nov. 27th, 5:30-9:00 Twilling is an old fashioned embroidery stitch that adds a lot of elegance to any project. The combination of the striking dimensional look and the ease and speed of making the stitch has made twilling a new favorite. It is very easy to do and also very addictive. You can frame our "Winter" project, make it into a pillow or small wallhanging. Kits available. Teacher: Jean Schild Class Fee: $20.00 Fusible Placemats Friday, Nov. 16th, 10:00-1:00, OR Friday, Nov. 16th, 6:00-9:00 I brought this unique product back from Quilt Market in May. It's simple as 1,2, 3. Choose you fabric, fuse your fabric, zigzag along the edge - or bind) and done! I have washed and dried mine as I don't want to sell a product that is inferior. Well... it looks like I just finished making it! Did not come "unfused!" Wonderful quick gifts, or make several sets to change your table. 5 THINK AHEAD! Page 5 Wrapped Around Elegance Saturday, Nov. 17th, 10:00-1:00, OR Saturday, Nov. 17th, 1:30-4:30. Wait 'till you see these beautiful handmade balls. You won't be able to stop at just one! You can use them as ornaments to hang on your tree, or display several in a glass vase, or give as a gift. The kits will be complete with the precut fabric squares, pins, ribbon and ball. All you will need to do is sign up and come! But not to fear, I know they will come through. The kits will be cut for you in advance, so you will be going home with completed holiday happenings." I m sure by the end of September they will have their projects on display so stop in and take a peak! Sandi has designed a handsome snowman scene using wool. You will be able to make it into a 12" x 16" pillow or use it as a wallhanging. Teacher: Sandi Orologio Class Fee: $10.00 One Block Wonders - Encore! Saturday, Jan. 5th, 10:00-3:00 You ll be surprised at how easy the techniques are and yet how complex they look to the observer. Once again, fabric is the key! You will choose one focus fabric for the major portion of your quilt and some coordinating fats for the dimensional cube blocks if you wish to make the cubes. This is also an oohing and aahing class! I love this quilt just as much as I do my Stack-n-Whack quilts. Join us so it can become a favorite one of yours too! Teacher: Barb Miller Class Fee: $20.00 Constellation - Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star Quilt Saturday, January 12th, 10:00-3:00 We love Debbie Tucker's rulers. In this class you will make a Lemoyne Star quilt using her latest ruler, The Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star. The blocks are all made from strips and there are NO set in seams! You will be constructing stars of various sizes to complete the quilt, so you will be very comfortable with the ruler and the technique when you leave class. Evelyn has her own concerns with the expanding internet sales at the quilt shop and as much as she loves Liza, she wonders if it's a good idea for her son to be so serious with a young woman who's just getting ready to spread her wings.
