~ HAVASU STITCHERS ~ Lake Havasu City, Arizona An Affiliate of the Arizona Quilters Guild volume 21, Number 4 April 2015 Greetings from the President... Howdy everyone.. Wow what a year we have had so far!!! Quilting At the Lake, classes and more classes, teachers from everywhere, both local and other states, National Quilting Day, Spring Frenzy, Winterfest, Balloon Fest, AQG Meetings, Quilt Show Opportunity siting s all over the state, workshops for the Quilt Show Boutique, Hearts Desire, and Ways and Means all done by you, our membership! Thanks for being actively involved in this guild! REMINDER: WE VOTE THIS MONTH - We have some openings in our long list of committees and positions, so please write yourself or your group in on the ballot. We would hate to see one of the valuable committees listed below come to an end because no one volunteered to lead the group. Every position on the ballot could use some help. Please, write yourself in to lend a hand! Ways and Means: This is such an important team. yes team! It includes those who run the events mentioned earlier. It can be a friendship group, two of you quilters, or whatever it takes to get the job done. This team not only puts raffle baskets together for our meetings and runs the 50/50 raffle, but they also work with all the other groups to make sure we have what we need in inventory to make money for the Guild. Thanks to the leadership of Carolyn and Bonnie, we netted $3500 last year. But don t let this position scare you. These gals were pulling double duty this year by leading both the Quilt Show Boutique and Ways and Means. Get some friends and try it out! Publicity: We need someone to get the word out now and again when we are doing something wonderful. Well, that is always happening, isn t it! Just help all the teams this is not a big job, but a very important one. You create it and make it yours. Website: I am getting our website up this year, but I would love volunteers to work with me and Carolyn Victor. We could use a couple folks to help keep the website up to date. Our Team, both past and present, is made up of volunteers trying to keep something great going. Some do it well; some do not. That's life. It takes all kinds of people to run a volunteer organization/event with all kinds of motives and all kinds of varying skills. Clear goals, planning with attention to detail, and communication among the volunteers these are the secrets to success. I have always felt that any guild was about its members and their work, primarily intended as a service and educational opportunity for the community and the membership. It has been my observation that the guild is an activity with many moving parts. The need for all parts to work together and provide mutual support is paramount. I am not the only person to ever be a volunteer within a guild, but there are realities about the Havasu Stitchers which probably should be accepted and worked with; we have to watch the money, use Robert s Rules of Order, conduct community events, give back to the community charitably, and keep the sellable items ready to be sold. Let s not waste untold amounts of time wishing that the organization was something that it is not, or trying over and over to reinvent the wheel. We have a GREAT guild, an evolving guild for both the new and advanced quilter let s keep it going, shall we? Quilting out loud.. Sherri GENERAL MEETING DATES Thursday, April 9, Quality Inn, Havasu Rm, 6:30 pm We ll Vote and have a Demo by Kim Pebley! Thursday, May 14, Quality Inn, Havasu Rm, 6:30 pm What s Inside. 4 Education Upcoming Lone Starburst Class with Kimberly Enimo $40 Sunday, April 12, 2015 from 9 am - 4 pm Location: Quality Inn, 271 S. Lake Havasu Ave, Lake Havasu City Hosted by Havasu Stitchers Workshops Sara Neal 6 hour class / Intermediate level This is Kimberly's most popular class and it sells out wherever she teaches it. All it takes are 40 2½ strips from a purchased precut bundle or strips cut from your own stash, plus one background fabric. The diamond design possibilities are practically endless! Kimberly will teach you how to strip-piece and cut diamond building blocks from strips using her EZ Jelly Roll Ruler with no Y or set-in seams. You ll design your own unique Lone Starburst variation quilt! The first part of the class focuses on accurate and efficient cutting and piecing of the diamond units; the latter part of the class will focus on design elements and the almost limitless possibilities for designing your own layout using your diamond units. The real magic comes from the fact that the quilt is assembled with straight-set blocks, not diamond wedges or blocks on point. This eye-opening class is for anyone who wants to create a one-of-a-kind quilt. Background Kimberly Enimo is the featured quilter in the February 2015 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine. She is an author, award-winning quilter, designer, international instructor and quilt judge. She has written five books published by the American Quilter s Society, including Modern Quilts & More, Precut Bonanza, Jelly Roll Quilt Magic, Jelly Roll Quilts & More, and Quilt A Travel Souvenir. She has also hosted four popular online courses: Amazing Appliqué, Magical Blocks: Out of the Box, Magical Jelly Roll Quilts, Chain of Stars Mystery Quilt, and two Quilt-Alongs including Radiant Jewel and Spangled Stars featured on Craftsy.com! She has also appeared on television and radio programs such as America Quilts Creatively and Pat Sloan s American Quilting and Patchwork Radio Show. She has written many articles and designed original patterns which have appeared in numerous publications, including American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine, McCall s Quilting and Quick Quilts Magazines, Best Modern Quilts, American Quilter Magazine, Quilters Home Magazine, Japanese Patchwork Tsushin Magazine, Down Under Quilts, Irish Quilting Magazine and Studios Magazine. Kimberly has developed a signature line of innovative tools including the EZ Flying Geese Ruler, EZ Jelly Roll Ruler, EZ Hearts Cut Tool, and the EZ Pineapple Ruler, all manufactured and distributed by EZ Quilting. Kimberly is the proud member of the prestigious group of Bernina Sewing Ambassadors of America, and has also represented Janome and Pfaff Sewing Machines. Most of all, she loves to meet quilters from around the world and share the joy and passion of patchwork with everyone! Website: Kimberly@kimberlyeinmo.com Payment Options The link below will take you to the AQG website to register online and use PayPal to pay. Register by US Postal mail using the form at file/einmo%20registration%20form_ pdf. If you receive a "SOLD OUT" message, send in your registration by mail. Registrations received by mail will be placed in the classes according to the postmark on the envelope according to their first and second choices. 4

Education, Continued Sara Neal April 12 We are excited to have Kimberly Enimo teach us her Lonestar Burst. Kim teaches all across the country and will help us make crisp points in a flash. Come learn from a fantastic teacher! $40 April 11 Kim Pebley will show us how to make a unique and fun pattern with an easy-to-use template in this pattern called Less than Traditional. Great for seasonal table runners and placemats. Overcome your fear of round edges with us! $5 April 28 Celebrate the coming summer with Darlene Miller as she teaches us this playful pattern for Radiant Sun. Darlene will teach us great techniques to line up points and ease all those curves. A great skill class for all levels! 5

Education, Continued Sara Neal May 11 We will be making our own wilt-proof May flowers with Phyllis Barton. She will teach us the Dresden Plate pattern in a colorful wall hanging. Once learned, this pattern adapts beautifully to any size from a king sized quilt to a placemat. Another great skill building class! May 29 Sheila Arnold will travel to Lake Havasu so we can learn this great variation of Drunkard s Path. This template-based design is easily completed in any size and will showcase those great prints you already have stashed away! May 30 Sheila Arnold rounds out the weekend with a fresh modern design. Another template-based design that stitches up quickly once you know the secret! Come make a fresh quilt for someone special. 6

Thanks to all who celebrated National Quilting Day with us on Saturday, March 21! 7

Library - Check out Books Sarah McNary The Torn Page...Library News The Library has a new home! It s been moved to the Quality Inn to make it even more convenient to check out items after the membership meeting. As always... Patterns for Sale ($1) Books for Sale ($.50) LOADS of Magazines for Sale ($.25 or 5 for $1) Library Loans are 1 month; keep something 2 months and you'll be asked to share your enthusiasm for the item with a 20 second blurb; keep something 3 months and we'll ask you to do a short demo at the meeting (we know you're an expert after 3 months). Online catalog of the collection coming soon! PUPPY PILLOWS Hi Stitchers, Thank you for your response to making a special place in your sewing room for the puppy pillow scraps. This is a great way to get more pillows for the Humane Society. I would like to just list the information again for those that did not get to the meeting. l. Set aside a clean container (box, wastebasket, whatever container) that fits near your cutting table or sewing machine. Place a clean pillowcase inside the container with the top folded over the outside. As you get scraps of clean fabric, place it in the pillowcase. Once the pillowcase is half full or more, pull it out and sew the top shut. It doesn't have to be fancy. Please no batting, pins, paper, or sharp objects. Bring the completed pillow to the next meeting and i will collect them and take them to the Humane Society. 2. The size of the scraps can be 5 inch square or smaller. They fluff up nice and make for a warm spot for the cats and dogs. 3. You can use your judgment as to how full you fill your case. The fuller the bag, the fluffier and softer the bed. We do like to tell the Humane Society that the pillows are washable so keep that in mind when stuffing the cases. A washer won't take too heavy of a pillow. 4. I want to thank you in advance for helping the animals have a nice fluffy bed each night. This project also helps us keep our sewing rooms clean and tidy. It also helps to keep the fabric scraps out of the landfill a little longer. Karm Webert and all the Puppy/Kittie Pillow Crew 9

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MEMBERS NEW GROUP CONNECTING THREADS Our new group, Connecting Threads, should be especially helpful to new guild members. To make it work, we need current members to sign up to be Threaders for a 2 to 3 month commitment. Threaders will be the connection to help new members learn what the Havasu Stitchers do. You ll send phone or reminders to the newbies about classes, community outreach, coffees, parties, fabric exchange at meetings, to name just a few. You ll sit together at the meeting, talk about what is going on. You ll just Be There for the new member. What do you think? We really do need present members to step up and help us out to make this work. Questions? Call Rita McElhinney Introducing Holly Caruso! I joined the Havasu Stitchers in May I ve been quilting since the early 1970 s. I like to try new styles and see if it is for me. All four of my kids can sew, but only one made a quilt in Girl Scouts. I have a niece in Oregon who is big in longarm quilting. I started out making clothing, then moved on to home sewing. I have upholstered chairs, cars, boats, and our golf cart. We ve been boating in Havasu about 11 years, and we moved here full time last April from Huntington Beach, CA. I was born and raised in southern California. We were looking for a place to retire, with lots of things to do, great weather, and friendly people. Havasu has it all! I also joined the Marine Corps League Auxiliary. I don't have a favorite charity, but I like to help where I am needed. 10
