1 An Affiliate of the Arizona Quilters Guild volume 22, Number 5 May 2016 Greetings From the President. Yippee! Yahoo! The sun is out and the cold weather is gone!! Get ready for the pool, lake, boat, floaters, and fun times ahead. It has been a very interesting year for me as well as for this guild. We have gone through some good times and some ugly times. You have let your feelings show. It is good to see that you care so much. I feel very privileged to have served as your President. This month I am asking for you to bring your quilts to the general meeting on May 12 for a mini quilt show. I will be bringing and setting up screens for those who come early. I will also be thanking all those who have helped to make this year a great success. Don t miss out on the fun! I have to say that I am going to enjoy the position of Past President. I have made a great deal of friendships and hope that they keep growing. Speaking of growing. My bathtub needs to have a trim, the backyard needs to be finished, and the inside of the house is still out of control. I wish the guild years of growth. Remember that without you volunteering your time to build this guild, we will only be just a guild. May our paths cross often out of the love of quilting. Sheri Ahrens

Here s the list of the 4 blocks (or 2 if you re on the short 24 block program) that are due at the meeting in May: Peas & Carrots, Farm Fresh Flower, Gingham, and Grandma s Quilt Block woot woot!! And the blocks to be shown at the May meeting, but due in June, include: Out to Pasture, Scrappy Strawberry, Spring Star, and Summer Star. Just a reminder: there ll be one Vintage Farm Girl Workshop left on June 2, 4PM to 9PM, at Havasu Quilts Cost is $10. Bring your quilt blocks, your fabrics, and we ll work on anything you need to get this quilt finished sashings, cornerstones, flying geese border, backing whatever I can do to help you finish this quilt call me, text me, me. Quilt on, Farm Girls! Quilt on! Shirley Johnson Hello Stitchers! Please join me in welcoming Brenda Stanway as our new Librarian! I know she will be awesome in her new position and we can look forward to continuing our thriving Library magazine, book, and pattern sales. As you've heard me say before, the 25 cents you spend on a magazine (or 5 for $1); the 50 cents you spend on a book, and the $1 you spend on a pattern really adds up over time and allows us to expand our collection. Thanks to all who continue to sort through their personal collections and donate items they no longer need - Your cast-offs are another quilter's treasure! I've so enjoyed my two years as Librarian and look forward to remaining an active patron of the library sales. Sincerely, Sarah McNary Community Outreach Wendy Howe Next meeting: No Community Outreach meeting in May. Plan to join us in June! Our Goal: To share our love of sewing and help people in our community. I am having a Thank You Coffee-Tea to thank all of you for your help with Community Outreach sewing, knitting, ideas, visiting, donating fabric and supplies. The date is Wednesday, May 18 from 1 pm to 4 pm at 1905 Mimosa Dr. I am asking for a RSVP to get a rough number please check the roster for phone and information. Watch the Dangling Thread Newsletter and Missy Quilter for information from the new Community Outreach Chairperson, Linda Higuera, starting June 1. I have had a great time this last two years. Now off to something new! Wendy Howe 3
4 CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS! QUILT DOCUMENTATION IS COMING TO OUR guild! In 1986 a group of 13 women launched the Arizona Quilt Project with a goal of recording and photographing as many pre-1940 quilts as possible in Arizona. By 1992 over 2774 quilts had been recorded as documented in the video, Quilts: Pieces of Time. Fast forward twenty-five years the Arizona Quilt Project was reborn with a lofty goal of documenting EVERY quilt, new and old, in the state of Arizona. Each documented quilt is entered into the database, The Quilt Index, at Michigan State University. Today the database houses over 50,000 quilts and is the major resource for quilt scholarship. The quilt documentation event is coming to Havasu, destined to be a regular part of each Havasu Stitchers general meeting! The group forming in Havasu will meet beginning July 14 during the early afternoon. A group of quilt documenters will be coming and will welcome Havasu quilt lovers to shadow them during the training session. They will advise Havasu participants in the process of documenting any quilt. A number of Havasu Stitchers have already participated in different quilt documentation events held in Kingman so they re familiar with the process, but to shadow quilt documenters and then form our own documentation team is a giant step towards success for our guild. The various positions needed include scribes, wranglers, station attendees, intake table coordinator, librarian, photographer, and of course, quilt owners with beautiful quilts. Watch for more information to come in the June Dangling Thread Newsletter and via Missy Quilter. This is a great opportunity for anyone who loves quilts to find out what s involved in the formal documenting of a quilt. You will learn more about quilts than you ever knew! Please join us. Shirley Johnson and Sherri Ashford Needed: A Quilt Show Chairperson! Won t you please think about volunteering to chair this very important committee? We have members willing to serve on the Quilt Show Committee, but we need a Chairperson to lead the group. Maybe you and your sewing group would like take on this challenge and work together for the good of the guild! Thank you to Laurie Bevins and Judy Eide for volunteering to contact the vendors to get the Quilt Show off to a good start! Our theme will be Americana, with the quilt designed by 1st VP Geri Larson and quilted by Linda Visnaw. Please raise your hand at the next general meeting or contact one of the officers to volunteer. 4
