On a montly basis, from February to October, Mary Jo Williamson will provide members with a piece of "ugly" fabric. Of course, one person's ugly could be another's pretty, but the challenge will be to incorporate this fabric into an 10" block or blocks and return it (them) the following month. Blocks will be used to make charity quilts. When the blocks are returned at the meeting the following month, each block will earn the member a ticket for that month's prize drawing. We hope you'll join us in this fun adventure in thinking outside the box. Jen Schiel

5 Parker Piece Keepers Quilt Guild General Meeting Parker Adventist Hospital April 24 th Meeting Notes Program Kari Nichols gave a fascinating program, Thoughts of a Quilt Designer, describing how she became manager of Holly s Quilt Cabin and a designer of beautiful patterns and fabric for her company Mountainpeek Creations. Business Meeting President Andrea Loschen began the business meeting at 8:00. Volunteers Needed to Create Slate of Officers for 2019 Board: Andrea asked for 2 or 3 people to take on job of putting together a slate of officers for the 2019 board. Previous Meeting Notes: Notes from the March meeting were approved Challenge: Mary Jo Williamson discussed the 2018 Challenge. This year, members take home a package to make a 12-inch block and bring it to the next meeting. If you bring back a block, you are part of a separate drawing for a door prize at that meeting. You re also contributing to our charitable obligation to Parker Adventist Hospital for giving us free meeting space. Treasury: Carol Stout stated that we have a checking balance of and savings of $ Membership: 45 people attended the meeting, and 4 new members joined. We also had 2 guests. We now have 54 members. Doorprizes: A drawing was held for those who created 12-blocks for charity blocks from packages given out by Mary Jo. Williamson. A separate drawing was held for 6 doorprizes (4 mugs with fat quarters and 2 sets of patterns donated by Kari Nichols). Members with April birthdays were given an additional ticket. Programs: Marlo Cady discussed great upcoming programs you won t want to miss. At the May 22 meeting, appraiser and author Cindy Brick will speak on Vintage Quilts. 6 At the July 24 th meeting, attendees will be able to bring scraps and but them using a variety of Accuquilt cutting machines. It s a fun opportunity to get some scraps cut quickly and to see the variety of machines and die cuts that are available. Members can sign up for a second workshop at the May meeting, if there is room. After the May meeting, if the workshops still have room, PPK may open up the Angela Walters workshops to non-members. Library: Eileen Burley brought Missouri Star Block books again, which have been quite popular. To check out a book, you sign a card and take the book home for one month. You can call Eileen if you want a book. We own over 600 books and she s always open to new donations. Outreach: Eileen Burley: We donate 3 quilts a month to the hospital. The. quilts go to terminally ill adults at Parker Adventist hospital. There are packages of material available you can pick up at meetings. 8 Parker Piece Keepers Quilt Guild Guest: Angela Walters Quilting Is My Therapy, and hostess of The Midnight Quilt Show Tuesday, August 28th, 2018 Parker Piece Keepers Quilt Guild meeting Guest speaker: Angela Walters Lecture: Help! How Do I Quilt It? Doors open at 6:00 pm. There s a $5 fee for nonmembers. Wednesday, August 29th, 2018 Workshop 1: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm: Little Changes, Big Variety Workshop 2: 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm: Dot to Dot Quilting Sign up for the workshops: At the April 24th, meeting PPK members may sign up for one workshop. At the May 22nd, meeting PPK members may sign up for a second workshop. The cost of each workshop is $40 for PPK members. Payment is due at sign up; check or cash will be accepted, payable to PPK. Each workshop is limited to 25-participants. Location: Parker Adventist Hospital Conference Center. Descriptions: Help! How Do I Quilt It? Sometimes deciding what to quilt can be harder than actually quilting it! Angela Walters will help you decide what machine quilting designs to use by having you ask the expert of your opinion, you! This lecture will start with a slideshow presentation full of quilted eye candy and practical tips for choosing designs. Then, it s your turn! Attendees can bring quilt tops to get ideas and suggestions for ways to quilt it. It s part show and tell, part practical advice and completely fun! Little Changes, Big Variety In this class you learn how small changes to classic machine quilting designs can create completely new designs. You will be amazed at how many designs you will learn and how many different ways you can use them. Bring an adventurous attitude and your questions, this jampacked class will send you on your way inspired and ready to quilt. Dot to Dot Quilting Quilting intricate designs can be as easy as connecting the dots! Learn how to use points on the quilt as a guide for quilting with minimal marking and lots of fun! You will learn how to recognize the dots on your quilt, different designs, and how you can adapt them for you.

9 Required Supplies Sewing Machine- Any type of machine will work, just be sure that it has the ability to drop the feed dogs. If you aren t sure, please refer to the owner s manual. Free-motion Quilting Foot- any type of Free-motion quilting foot will work (i.e. Open toed or clear plastic). If you re unsure if you have one, check your owner s manual or contact the manufacturer. Quilt sandwiches for practice- 2-3 Fat quarter sized sandwiches will work (although they can be any size you prefer) Or if you are feeling adventurous, you can use some unquilted orphan blocks or a small quilt top. They can be basted in any method you prefer, such as with pins, fusible batting or fusible spray. Small quilt sandwiches can even be left unbasted if you want. The most important thing is that you have something to practice on. Thread and scissors- To make the machine quilting process easier, use quality thread made for machine quilting. My favorites are Superior So Fine and Aurifil (both 50wt), but you can bring any type you like. A thread color that contrasts with your practice quilt sandwiches will allow you to see your quilting. Optional Supplies: These aren t necessary, but if you already own them, bring them with you! -Supreme slider -Free-motion quilting gloves -Extended base for your machine -Camera (to take pictures of quilted samples) -Paper and Pencil- Each class includes handouts free of charge, but if you think you might want more room for drawing, bring a notebook.
