16 Shirley Gisi will be the featured Educator at this month s Guild Meeting. Here is a letter she sent us about her landscape she is doing for us and other choices those taking her class will have. Michele, This week I will be sending you two samples of the Lake quilt and one sample of mesas. The lake quilts are not quilted as I want people to be able to see the back and how they were pieced. I am not sure this design will appeal to everyone since it is pretty monochromatic and also has small pieces. It requires a good eye for fabric. Also, the land that juts into the lake was challenging to piece in. I wanted it to be as accurate to the photo as possible. Anyway, that is why I am sending another option for students. The mesa quilt is small and uses both ombre and batiks. It is simple enough and small enough for a student to complete and possibly frame and quilt in the class. It also can utilize a wide variety of fabric types and colors. If someone wants to finish it they would need to bring batting, border fabric and backing. I can put together additional similar designs also. By-the-way, this sample was not free-motion quilted. I did it on my machine with a straight stitch. Quilting method is up to the student. I want to appeal to a wide enough audience to interest people in taking the class. Give me your opinions on this. I have a mountain design that would also work well. Shirley Gisi 16

17 Committee News News! Our Charities Chairperson...Dottie Holman.. Announced at the July meeting: We will be distributing our hygiene items to Catholic Charities and the Salvation Army. We are also having a T-Shirt drive through Catholic Charities for the months of August and September for the homeless. All old used t-shirts will be appreciated, both men s and women s (tank tops are appreciated as well!) If you know of other agencies, please let Dottie know, so we can help everyone! Community Outreach distributed 33 lap quilts, 47 walker bags and 59 dining scarves to local facilities in September. River Valley Hospice also received 8 neck pillows and Heart to Heart received 3 childrens quilts with pillow cases. We also provided ten patriotic quilts for the veterans presentation on September 20th. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this happen. We have been gifted with twenty patriotic quilt tops and ten matching pillow cases from Jeanette Kennedy and Kevin Cabbage. If you would like to quilt these please let me know. If we can get them finished we can do another veterans presentation before Christmas. Long Arm quilters - don't forget Community Outreach can use your large batting scraps. We piece these together to make "Frankenbatting" for our lap quilts. Linda Higuera Mona Bolen 17

18 QUILT ROOM ROAM SUCCESS I think we owe the gals who opened their homes for the Quilt Room Roam a big Thank You! Sherri Ashford, Dani Morgan, Ann Creek, Phyllis Barton, Ellie Sarmardo, and Cathy Geer... you were so generous to let us tour your beautiful homes! Thank you so much! Being able to tour six homes in three hours was a huge accomplishment for a group of friendly, talkative women, and we learned an abundance of storage tips along the way. The refreshments provided at Cathy Geer's home were just what we needed after roaming around town. Being able to sit and visit in small groups was reminiscent of the Friendship Coffee Socials our guild sponsored a few years back. About once a month individual members or small groups would invite Havasu Stitchers to tour their homes and peruse their sewing rooms. The Guild donated $25 to offset the cost of refreshments, which could be simple or lavish. Usually door prizes were awarded which added to the fun The Socials could be a daytime, afternoon, or evening get-together..whatever was best for the hostess. It was a great way to get to know other guild members in a small group setting. Somehow we got away from holding Friendship Coffee Socials, but I bet there are individual members or friendship groups who would be willing to host a Social once again. Or maybe you'd prefer to organize Roam II, and wrap up with refreshments at a local park! Members who were out of town and missed the first Roam would probably love to participate in Roam II. At any rate, let's bring back the Socials and get to know one another better! You can sign up to host a Social by contacting Judy Pedersen or Carolyn Walters, or visiting them at the Hospitality Table at the next general meeting. They'll have a sign-up sheet available and you can pick the month, date, and time that works bests for you. See you at the next Friendship Coffee Social! 18

19 The Memories... Then off to Dani Morgan, Amazing us of small space! It began here...sherri Ashford s And right a way the fun started Ann Creek is is an Phyllis Barton s whole house is a quilt room! organizational genius Ellie Scamardo s room drew lots of Awes! We ended at Cathy Geer s and were welcomed with lovely snacks and warm friendship 19
