1 BERNINA Sewing Club The Bernina WA View Dear Club Member, Welcome back for the New Year, the whole BERNINA WA family hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and spent some fun times over the break with your families was a big year at BERNINA WA and 2019 is shaping to be even bigger. Print Post Approved No.P.P Volume 14 Issue 1 January 2019 We have now had lots of the photos printed from our day with Mr Hans Peter Ueltschi. When you call into one of our stores dont t forget to ask for a copy or simply send us an and we will attach your photo. Included in this edition of our club newsletter is the starting program of our classes for the first part of the year, we all hope you will come along and learn some great new techniques. We will also be hosting some fantastic workshops during the year and will announce them as soon as possible to allow you time to book a place in these one-off events. Have a look on our class list for our first Save the Date announcement for New club arrangements for 2019 have already kicked off, you are now able to pay your annual club fees by direct transfer to our bank and the details will be on your renewal form when it falls due. We are currently reviewing all our club liistings for everyone and updating our records as we have found over the holidays a few have gone missing from our system. If you have not been receiving our notifications via please feel free to contact us at: bernina@burnells.com.au and we will make sure your details are correct. As many of you have seen our range of quality fabrics continues to grow, which now includes fabrics from Benartex and Gutterman with more designer fabrics soon to be arriving. We offer all of our fabrics either by the metre or as pre-cut fat quarters so take a look at our range when you visit. This year through our Kennedys Creative Sewing Centres we are pleased to announce that we have signed on to be a Diamond sponsor for the Western Australian Quilters Association. We believe at BERNINA it is important to support the WA sewing community, so for any WAQA members keep an eye out for us at the events during the year. As you will see club begins again February at each of our three main stores and the whole Bernina WA team are looking forward to welcoming you again soon. Please note that April s club week will remain on the third week of the month despite it coinciding with Easter. Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday clubs will be as normal but Fridays cancelled due to it being Good Friday. Brad, Tracey & the BERNINA WA sewing team

2 Osborne Park News Our satellite store in Osborne Park has now been open for almost two years. It carries the full range of Bernina, bernette Sewing Machines and Overlockers plus a great range of accessories. Also for those in the area looking for that last minute reel of thread or habby item, Osborne Park has a great range on offer. Our onsite technician John is avaliable to service your machine or overlocker and even repair your Horn Cabinet. We are now going to start offering a few in-house lessons on your machine or overlocker. Starting the 8th February we will have Trish working three Fridays a month at Osborne Park. Trish is happy to help you out with a one on one lesson or just a little sewing advice to complete your project. If there is anything that we can help you with please contact either John on or Tracey on to make a booking. Cannington s Corner Happy New Year to all our club members, I hope 2019 will be a healthy & happy one for you all, with lots of sewing opportunities. To start the year off I will be doing a beginners basic sewing class that will run over 3 weeks. These classes will give the basics for dressmaking and will enable to kick start students off with some good sewing skills. Once again my patchwork teacher is bringing another quilt to class that will suit either a beginner or someone with some experience already. It is a lovely pin wheel effect and Margo has lots of tips and tricks for a great finish. I had such a great response from club with the shirt that I did. I have decided to dedicate a class for making a shirt or a shirt maker style dress, with a collar stand. This will give you first hand experience of getting that quality garment look. At Cannington we are starting a foundation piecing club for those of you that are interested in this technique of patchwork, it is an informal session with no teacher as such but a great way to share ideas and fabric, this will be the first Friday of the month, starting in February. And I am very pleased to say that Heather from Midland is going to come and do a class at Cannington called Accidental Landscape. It s a very effective and clever concept with such a visual impact and you will walk away having made the most beautiful wall hanging. Most classes will have samples in the shop for you to see, however if you are interested let me know and I can always you a picture of that project. 3 Midland Snippets Happy New Year to all Bernina Club Members and their families. Let us hope it is a healthy, prosperous year for us all, jam packed with enjoyable and successful sewing. Firstly to start the new year both Heather and I take privilege in thanking you all for your very kind and thoughtful donations to the ladies refuge collection throughout We managed to package 141 gift packages filled with beautiful toiletries and useful items. The Anglican Church were very appreciative of our efforts and were eager to distribute them to where they were most needed. The short break has been wonderful. Lots of ladies called in for a chat and catch up while I managed to sort the shop for Heather and hubby are proud to announce the arrival of the long awaited Morarity. Morarity is a Russian blue kitten and both are smitten with the kitten. Janet and hubby on the other hand have been trying to sort the fruit fly and bird pests attacking the pear and apricot trees on their property. Bernina machines have once again been the hero of the day. Hubby had to widen the fruit fly netting and yes my trusty Bernina 950 (set on zig zag 4mm wide and 2mm length) sewed the netting together with ease. Yes this year thanks to my trusty Bernina we have picked spray free apricots and soon pears. Happy sewing to you all, wish you no unpicking this year. Chero Janet and Heather. QUICK TIP #86 - Ruffler Foot Several customers have requested a quick way to gather sequin netting, soft fabrics and tulle. Ruffler foot to the rescue. This wonderful and most useful attachment makes ruffles for dresses, skirts and tutus etc. Set your machine to straight stitch 4mm long. Place the circular bracket onto the needle bar and hook the foot onto the machine as usual. Slide your fabric into the section of the foot that uses a small set of teeth to feed the fabric. This foot saves so much time when gathering (looks like small pleats when set on 1st setting). When completed the garment is full of flounce. This foot is also fabulous when pleating and gathering thicker fabric or stiffer netting.
