11-13 The George Arcade, South Molton, Devon, EX36 3AB SATURDAY WORKSHOP LIST 2019 We will require a 15 deposit at the time of booking, with the balance payable on the day of the workshop. A list of ingredients will be sent out two weeks (or so) prior to the workshop. Deposits are NON-REFUNDABLE and NON-TRANSFERABLE. Workshops begin at 9.30am for a sharp 10am start and the course finishes at 4pm (unless stated otherwise). Please bring your lunch with you, or you can order sandwiches from Baker George. We will provide tea, coffee and biscuits throughout the day, and cake for afternoon tea. 19 th January DO YOU KNOW YOUR SEWING MACHINE? WAITING LIST ONLY This perennial favourite will give you the confidence to service your own sewing machine and find out how to use all the different functions, stitches and attachments. You will produce a tablet, mobile phone or scissor case to utilise the knowledge you have gained. 26 th January BEGINNERS PATCHWORK & ROTARY CUTTING WAITING LIST ONLY An introduction to basic patchwork to include rotary cutting and ¼ seam sewing by hand or machine. The workshop will show you how to cut and piece the Disappearing Nine Patch block and then make that into a cushion or mat. 2 nd February FREE-MOTION QUILTING FOR BEGINNERS WAITING LIST ONLY Acquiring this skill will allow you to quilt projects with more imagination than just straight lines. You will require a darning or free-machine foot suitable for your machine. You will learn many in-fill designs and hopefully gain confidence to experiment and practice in your own time. 9 th February THE CRAZY PATCHWORK CHALLENGE WAITING LIST ONLY This is based on the BLACK BAG CHALLENGE; forcing you to use fabrics and colour combos that you probably would never use knowingly. It is truly random good for those stitchers that need to be a little freer in their work. This will make you step right out of your comfort zone! You will create an entirely unique piece (or pieces) of crazy patchwork. There are no ¼ seams here!
16 th February ON THE EDGE POCKET CUSHION WAITING LIST ONLY This cushion has a useful pocket on the front in which you can store the TV remote, a book, hide chocolate etc. But it is also all about techniques. We hear all the time, I ve never done piping, I can t put a zip in. You will learn how to do piping, to insert a zip as well as adding piping to binding or between seams for accents. Add narrow ¼ filet or fun ric-rac and learn how to add really accurate narrow borders. All very useful techniques for future projects. 2 nd March FREE-FORM CURVES Tutor: Julia Learn how to cut and piece free-form curves using your rotary cutter and a ¼ seam. No two seams will be the same and each piece of work produced using this technique will be different. Hopefully you will be quilting the piece using free stitching or decorative stitching to add texture. 9 th March FABRIC PRINTING TASTER DAY WAITING LIST ONLY Tutor: Dot Carter Learn how to print your own fabric, using simple motifs in the morning and then in the afternoon you will be able to make a small project using what you have produced earlier in the day. 16 th March FOUNDATION PIECED RAINBOW STAR WAITING LIST ONLY An eight-pointed star made up of eight strippy foundation sections. Colours are cut from ONE ombré, graduated fabric, with a co-ordinating background. Suitable for those with only a basic knowledge of foundation piecing. Use the finished piece for a cushion, bag panel or small wallhanging. 23 rd March FREE-MOTION TRAPUNTO WAITING LIST ONLY An introduction to machine trapunto, using a soluble thread and layers of wadding. The seahorse design is suitable for a small wallhanging. Previous experience of free machine quilting would be an advantage for this day. 30 th March JAPANESE FOLDED PATCHWORK WAITING LIST ONLY Another form of quilt-as-you-go, but infinitely more transportable. This technique is based on the art of origami, allowing you to create eye-catching reversible quilts etc, with a variety of shapes. This is a machine-free workshop. 6 th April HIDDEN BOXES (EPP) Create an optical illusion quilt with two simple shapes diamonds and half hexagons and careful colour choices. This will be an English Paper Piecing project, so previous experience of this technique is preferable. This is a hand-sewing workshop.
13 th April AN INTRODUCTION TO BALTIMORE APPLIQUE Tutor: Lynda Shinner-Booth WAITING LIST ONLY The traditional, American hand needle-turn appliqué method will be explained and explored at this workshop. 27 th April FOUNDATION PIECED TWISTED LOG CABIN WAITING LIST ONLY The next step again for those wanting to expand their abilities with foundation pieced log cabin. This will be one large expanded log cabin block; which creates a stunning visual effect. 4 th May ZIPPED HANDBAG (WITH POCKET) A small bag with a zip top and internal pocket. Learn how to tackle a zip on the top opening of the bag. The pattern will be provided at the workshop. 11 th May SAND, SEA AND SURFSCAPE WAITING LIST ONLY Tutor: Penny Armitage A machine workshop, using Reverse Appliqué and layers of different fabrics, including painted Bondaweb (demo included), to create distance and wave effects, then you can further embellish with lace, wools, small pebbles and sea-shells, to enhance this shore-line scene. 18 th May UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS This interesting quilt is a little unusual and perfect for playing with colour. A great project for using up some of your stash. The six sided blocks are easy to construct with only strips and triangles. Squares and spots are added when the blocks are added together on the diagonal. You can choose from four sizes or projects. Interest is achieved by the flow of colour, from light to dark, or colour to colour and you will learn tips for this or you can use a more subtle palette of colour. 25 th May BEGINNERS FOUNDATION PIECING An introduction to foundation piecing; you will create small pictures of beach huts or boats, or both. Make one, or multiples to make a scene. 1 st June STAINED GLASS DRAGONFLY WAITING LIST ONLY A wallhanging made using the Stained Glass window technique. The leading made by using ¼ iron-on bias tape.
8 th June BEGINNERS PATCHWORK & ROTARY CUTTING An introduction to basic patchwork to include rotary cutting and ¼ seam sewing by hand or machine. The workshop will show you how to cut and piece the Disappearing Nine Patch block and then make that into a cushion or mat. 15 th June STACK & WHACK PATCHWORK A lesson in careful fussy-cutting and creating a multiple kaleidoscope effect quilt. Ideal for using those big print fabrics with a 24 repeat. 29 th June IRIS WALLHANGING WAITING LIST ONLY This wallhanging features a collaged background, raw edge flower appliqué, machine quilting and screen-printing. You will start by creating the background from a variety of fabrics, including cottons, silks, upholstery fabric, lace and sheers etc. The background is then machine quilted, then the raw edge appliqué added as well as the screen-printing. Printing on sheer fabric is also explained. 6 th July FREE-MOTION QUILTING FOR BEGINNERS Acquiring this skill will allow you to quilt projects with more imagination than just straight lines. You will require a darning or free-machine foot suitable for your machine. You will learn many in-fill designs and hopefully gain confidence to experiment and practice in your own time. 13 th July FOUNDATION PIECED DIAMOND LOG CABIN Foundation technique for log cabin, but using a diamond as the block shape. The patterns and possibilities are as varied as the traditional square log cabin blocks. A techniques workshop, how much more you do is up to you, but the more blocks you make the more possibilities there are. 20 th July DO YOU KNOW YOUR SEWING MACHINE? This perennial favourite will give you the confidence to service your own sewing machine and find out how to use all the different functions, stitches and attachments. You will produce a tablet, mobile phone or scissor case to utilise the knowledge you have gained. 3 rd August HALF HEXIES (EPP) The possibilities are endless! There will be a choice of two patterns using half hexagons, one for a small table runner (which can be extended) and another for a cushion or quilt block. This is a hand-sewing workshop.
10 th August OMBRE BARGELLO WAITING LIST ONLY A simple bargello panel using graduated ombré fabric so one fabric for the whole panel. Large enough for a cot or lap quilt, or finish it as a wallhanging. 17 th August SELVEDGE EDGE COTTON REELS We cut them off and discard them. But it s still fabric and it s still usable. As the title suggests you will create multiple cotton reels using selvedge edges as the thread. Never throw away another selvedge edge again! 31 st August ZIPPED POUCHES (SCRAP BUSTER) Tutor: Julia These extremely useful pouches are the perfect gift or for organising sewing bits and pieces, or as make-up or toiletry bags. Made using scraps and selvedge edges, with a foolproof way of inserting a zip. 7 th September LUNCH/SPONGE BAG This pretty bag features a waterproof liner so it is suitable for a sponge bag or will make a very impressive lunch bag for those eco-conscious stitchers. You will learn how to laminate the fabric for the lining. Choose from a group of fat quarters, or fabric yardage that co-ordinates. They make very nice presents so make a couple if you want to keep hold of one for yourself. 14 th September FABRIC PRINTING TASTER DAY Tutor: Dot Carter Learn how to print your own fabric, using simple motifs in the morning and then in the afternoon you will be able to make a small project using what you have produced earlier in the day. 21 st September SEMINOLE PATCHWORK WAITING LIST ONLY Traditional Seminole technique strip pieced and re-stitched to form interesting and complex looking patchwork patterns. It s easier than it looks. Lots of rotary cutting and ¼ seaming practice. 28 th September THE CRAZY PATCHWORK CHALLENGE This is based on the BLACK BAG CHALLENGE; forcing you to use fabrics and colour combos that you probably would never use knowingly. It is truly random good for those stitchers that need to be a little freer in their work. This will make you step right out of your comfort zone! You will create an entirely unique piece (or pieces) of crazy patchwork. There are no ¼ seams here!
5 th October SPECTACLE CASES Tutor: Julia Make a personalised glasses case for yourself or as a gift. Another project for using up scraps and a semi-rigid wadding. You should be able to make at least two on the day. 12 th October STAINED GLASS CIRCULAR MOONSCAPE WAITING LIST ONLY A small wallhanging using traditional Stained Glass technique. Gentle blue hues for the night sky enhance the white of the moon. 19 th October MINI LANDSCAPE NOTEBOOKS WAITING LIST ONLY We all like useful things and what better than a notebook. The covers have a framed landscape, these are made using turned edge appliqué which can be done by hand or machine, and also raw-edge. The covers also feature additional hand and machine stitching. The aim of the day is to complete a simple picture and then make up the very simple book cover. 26 th October STAINED GLASS CHRISTMAS WALLHANGING WAITING LIST ONLY Details TBC 2 nd November BINDING TOOL BRAID French Braid type design using 2½ strips and the Binding Tool ruler. Therefore a Jelly Roll will be suitable for this quilt design. The quilt top can be extended lengthwise or width-wise to suit any size quilt. 9 th November DO YOU KNOW YOUR SEWING MACHINE? This perennial favourite will give you the confidence to service your own sewing machine and find out how to use all the different functions, stitches and attachments. You will produce a tablet, mobile phone or scissor case to utilise the knowledge you have gained. 16 th November SPOTTY DOTTY This wall quilt features pieces and appliquéd spots and dots on a pieced background. Learn how to insert pieced circles and then use the waste fabric to add smaller elements. Add further dots to make a fun and truly original piece of work. 23 rd November PATCHWORK CATS TOTE BAG WAITING LIST ONLY A fun, simple tote bag with a front pocket. An appliqué cat peeks out from the top of the pocket with paws over the front and its tail curls up the back of the bag.
