Changing Places 1. Sew four 6 squares together.

Remove circle, turn through 90º. Replace circle.

3 Changing Places 1. Sew four 6 squares together. Press seams open and flat. 2. Cut 7 square iron-on interfacing. 3. Press interfacing to back of fabric. Draw 6 circle on R/S of fabric. 4. Cut VERY carefully round circle outline. 5. Remove circle, turn through 90º. Replace circle. Place stabiliser on back (sheet of paper works well) Pin both sections to stabiliser/paper. Satin stitch over raw edges (See next section for presser foot position.) Why not sew more squares together; cut out more circles, turn shapes for a simple effective and unusual design. How about changing hearts? Make two sets of squares. Press interfacing to the back. Cut out heart shapes and exchange. Satin stitch across the gap. Take care when satin stitching to position the presser foot so that the stitching is equidistant across the gap between the shapes. 1

4 For a very different effect - make half square triangles. Use the Easy Angle to make eight half square triangles (four in each colour), make four squares by sewing two half squares together then sew all four squares to make a larger unit. How about bonding hearts to the half-square triangle background. Sew two strips to form striped band. Draw a heart on fusible web (Bondaweb or similar). Press heart shape to W/S of striped band fabric. Take care to check that you have heart shape correct way round! Cut out heart and fuse in place. Use Companion Angle and make up square. Press interfacing to back - cut out circle. Turn shape through 90º. Replace. Satin stitch raw edges. What about cutting two circles then turning the shape round through 90º? There are many possibilities to Changing Places - play on! 2

Christmas Decoration Cut six heart shapes in felt.

Start stitching in from edge - reverse to edge, sew to seam

Add a sequin or bead. Repeat with all heart sections.

5 How about cutting half circles or arcs? Why not use half heart shapes or sections in a variety of ways? Think borders - think something different! Bond the shapes in place before appliquéing the raw edge. Christmas Decoration Cut six heart shapes in felt. Sew together down the centre line. Start stitching in from edge - reverse to edge, sew to seam end and reverse again. Mark both sides of one heart in three places as shown. Sew both Green sides of heart together on the lower mark. Add a sequin or bead. Repeat with all heart sections. Sew (Red & Green) opposite sides of hearts on centre marks. Repeat on every section. Finally sew the top sets of marks together. centre set of marks. (Photo on front page.) Adapt the same idea for a child s play ball. Attach trunk strip to base of tree - trim excess fabric. 3.

Lay this section R/S down on backing fabric. Pin layers together. 6.

6 Christmas Table Mat 1. Make up one 5 ½ Tri-Recs square - this form top of tree. 2. Add trunk: Cut 1½ x 2 strip - trunk. Cut two 2 x 3 strips either side of trunk. Attach trunk strip to base of tree - trim excess fabric. 3. Cut rectangle of fabric same size as tree block. Attach to one side. 4. Add 2 borders. 5. Place on wadding. Sew round outside edge to secure to wadding. 6. Lay this section R/S down on backing fabric. Pin layers together. 6. Sew round outer edge - leave a gap in one side. 7. Turn R/S out through gap. Press well. Close gap with small stitches Why not use the Tri-Recs template to make a border to a Christmas quilt or hanging? Create centre: Sew triangles into squares then make up centre block. 4 Cut 2½ strips: Use Companion Angle. From these strips cut: Eight Red triangles Four White triangles Four Green triangles One Red 4½ square Four White 4½ squares

Make border using Tri-Recs acrylic. Cut 4½ strips in Green and White. Make into Tri-Recs blocks.

Make corners using 4½ strips - cut half square triangles using Easy Angle. Attach border to the centre block, add a border or two.

.. consider using the Tri-Recs tree along side a cottage or beach hut.

7 Make border using Tri-Recs acrylic. Cut 4½ strips in Green and White. Make into Tri-Recs blocks. Add a trunk to each block Sew three units together into a row - repeat three more times. Make corners using 4½ strips - cut half square triangles using Easy Angle. Attach border to the centre block, add a border or two. This makes a super Christmas hanging or small tablecloth or table centre. Finally... consider using the Tri-Recs tree along side a cottage or beach hut.
