Sewing machine Rotary Cutter 28/45/60 mm Cutting Mat 17 x 23 Acrylic Ruler x 6.5 Acrylic Square of some description 6 /9.5 /12.5 Black and White Quilt: Tri Recs Acrylic Five Point Star/Drunkards Path Acrylic Pink and Blue Quilt: Two Versions EZ Scallop Template Yo-Yo Maker or Yo Yo Template Sheet 6mm Bias Tape Maker Or Eazy Peazy DVD (see Log Cabin patchwork section) Bright Quilt: Variety of versions Foldy Rolly Patchwork Pzzazz (Arced Border page 107) EZ Companion Angle + EZ Eazy Angle (Zigzag or Flying Geese border) Dasiy Delight & Floradorable DVD (See Floradorable section for easy method of adding borders using strips of equal length) Tucks Textures & Pleats (page 92 for more border advice) Marking pens and pencils or Chaco marker Clover mini iron Threads to match fabrics Fabric Products To make the quilt borders shown - Two sets of Six Fat quarters are required. Six Fat Quarters B/W bicycles, Six Fat Quarters Brights, Six Fat Quarters Pastel Patchwork Pink

Adding Borders Before a border can be added, measure the quilt. Measure the quilt not along the outside edge nor along any main seam but in a ahort distance from the outer edge.

If you measure the outer edge- it may have stretched during pressing or handling. Measuring along a main seam may produce a distored measurement as the fabric could have contracted during the sewing. Measure all sides and take average measurement. Plain borders can be added easily either by using four strips the same length (Eazy Peazy Patchwork DVD) or by following method suggested in Tucks TExtures & Pleats - measure opposite sides, attach strips then re- measure top and bottom - add strips sut to correct length. To calculate the width pf border required to increase the quilt top to the desired size: 1. Measure quilt raw edge to raw edge, substract S/A s (2 x ¼ = ½ ). This gives you the finished measurement of quilt. 2. Select desired measurement of quilt. From this measurement subtract the finished size of the original quilt. Divide the answer by 2 - this gives you the amount of border required for each side of quilt. NOW add S/A s to this measurement. Eg. Quilt measures 29½ raw edge to raw edge. Finished size = 29 Desired size of quilt = = = 1½ 1½ is the desired width of border to be added to every side NOW add S/A s Therefore cut border at 2 wide (i.e. 1½ + ½ ) Pink and Blue Quilt 1. Add borders (White in picture) to increae the quilt to 32 square (finished measurement) 2. Make twenty 8 Log Cabin blocks following the method on Eazy Peazy Patchwork DVD. Cut 2½ square for centre, 1½ strips for the rest of the design. commence design with pink strips. Continue until 3 sets of Pink strips added and 3 sets of Blue or Yellow. X 12 X 8

The completed panel should measure 48½ (raw edge to raw edge). To make the quilt larger - add more borders Plain borders can be embellished. Add decoration with bias binding and a few Yo-Yo s (Suffolk Puffs UK) or flowers. Draw an arc shape using the Scallop tool. Make ¼ wide binding. Sew binding over the drawn line by hand or machine. Make Yo-Yos or flowers. Placing Yo-Yos or flowers at the ends of the binding covers the raw ends of the binding!

Bright Quilt Many other border designs can be used.

Zig Zag design Using 3½ strips - make more Flying Geese - eleven units will be required for each side. Join six units together to make a long strip. Join five units together to make a strip and add 3½ square to each end - make the square from two half square triangles cut from 3½ strip. Cut 6½ squares for the corners.

Scalloped Border. Follow instructions on page 107 Foldy Rolly Patchwork Pzzazz. Make six units for each side.

Black & White Quilt Increase size of quilt to 36½ square (raw edge to raw edge). Cut 6½ strip from both Black and White fabrics.

Cut two White triangles using the other template - ensure that the material is folded R/S together before you cut!

6 Scalloped Border. Follow instructions on page 107 Foldy Rolly Patchwork Pzzazz. Make six units for each side. A different effect will be produced if you turn the border the other way. Black & White Quilt Increase size of quilt to 36½ square (raw edge to raw edge). Cut 6½ strip from both Black and White fabrics. Use Tri Recs centre template: Cut six Black and five White large triangles. Cut two White triangles using the other template - ensure that the material is folded R/S together before you cut! See Eazy Peazy Patchwork Plus Two for more information. Join sections together to make a 36½ strip as shown above. Make three more strips the same. These strips can be attached to the sides of the quilt but you may wish to play with the final effect... so prepare the corner units and play with the pieces.

7 Cut four 6½ sqaures for the corners or make four Drunkards Path blocks Drunkards Path Unit 1. Using the acrylic template, cut four sections of both shapes. 2. Take one L shape and one quarter circle. Fold in half and make small nick along centre fold. 3. Pin the L shaped section to the quarter circle - match the centre, pin each end - keep fabrics edges flush. Add more pins if required. 4. Sew round arc using ¼ S/A. Press seams towards the L section. 5. Make three more units. Play Time - Arrange the design! Play with the shapes and see what you can do! Turn the strips and the corner blocks round - if you didn t make Drunkards Path units then the design looks equally good with just black squares on the corners

8 Complete the quilt with one or two other borders. Laying different materials under a corner of the quilt helps in decision making when selectiin the next border.
