3 Soft Strip Basket/Bowl/ Bag 1. Cut 2½ wide strips fabric x full width or use a Jelly Roll (Floral Sketch used here), Join all strips to make a long band. Cut sufficient 1 strips wadding to same length of strips. (Cut more fabric and wadding strips for a larger piece and vice versa!) 2. If using fusible wadding - lightly press the strips to centre of W/S of fabric, butt ends of wadding strips together - if not simple lay the strips in place. Leave 3 gap between wadding and fabric end at start of strip. 3. Trim start of fabric and wadding to a blunt point. 4. Fold fabric and wadding over. 5. Pin or use quilt clips to hold wadded fabric strip folded. 6. Set wide zigzag and long stitch length on sewing machine. Zigzag over the folded edge. Try to keep fabric to left of presser foot so the zigzag stitch is only just catching folded edges. 7. Keep going! Leave end of strip open then more fabric and wadding can be attached. Make base For an oval base use EZ Uneven Nine Patch template. 1. Draw round template on wadding (In-R-Form makes good base). For a firmer base double up on wadding. 2. Cut two pieces of fabric ½ larger. Pin or press wadding to W/S of one fabric. Place other fabric R/S together with first. 3. Sew round edge of wadding - keep stitching 1/8 away from wadding edge. Leave a gap in the stitching. Trim excess fabrics back to seam except by gap. 4. Turn shape R/S out through gap. Sew gap closed or press carefully to conceal. 2

4 For a circular base - repeat previous stages using whatever size of circle you desire. Start Stitching Following same technique as described in Textile Coil Pots & Baskets, zigzag the folded strip onto the base shape. Just keep going! If you miss a bit - go back and re-sew across the missing section.! Finish the bowl/basket/box by tapering wadding and fabric in the same fashion as described in Stage 3 Alternative method for strip construction Cut 2 wide x full width fabric strips, and 1 wadding sections Join fabric strips to make long band. Using 1 (25mm) Bias Tape maker, thread fabric band into tape maker. Press. Open pressed band. Place wadding inside. Follow from Stage 2. 5 Jelly Roll Squares! Days by the Sea Jelly Roll features in this quick to create 35 x 44 quilt top. 1. Select four strips: Sew two strips together offsetting at start by approx 2. Repeat with other two strips but offset as mirror image - see picture 2. Sew both strips to make a tube. 3. Use Star & Geese template. Carefully cut 7-8 triangles from band. (You should get 8 triangles but if only 7 can be cut easily then make up an eighth by sewing the oddments from each end together of the cut strip to form a triangle and cutting to size.) 4. Open each section by undoing odd few stitches at top of triangle. Two differently striped squares are created. 5. Repeat above Stages with four more strips. 6. Arrange sections in desired pattern. See the show for ideas. Should design be on point as shown - fill in gaps by sewing two remaining 2½ strips together making a wide band. Use Star & Geese template and cut 8 triangles (piece eighth one if necessary). 4

6 Use these triangles to fill in the gaps. I had one last square left from my initial cutting out which I unpicked and used to fill in last two gaps. Sewing the blocks in strips may be a good choice - this avoids any nasty Y seams. Then sew strips to form two halves before sewing halves to make complete quilt top. Layer the quilt top with wadding and backing fabric then quilt in your preferred manner. Copyright: Jenne Rayment
