MembersOnly Club Block of the Month October 2011 Presented by Deirdre Hallett of Hallett House Designs Sponsored by Oregon Patchworks, Inc. Welcome to the tenth installment of my Block of the Month series for 2011! This month, we are just continuing to enjoy half-square triangles and get more practice with smaller sized pieces. This is another block that is perfect for playing around with color placement. This month, I submit to you the Star Chain block. Let s get started! FABRIC AND CUTTING You will need 4 different fabrics for this block. I chose a small multi-color print as my main fabric and then chose my other fabrics by finding colors that were also in the main fabric. Small prints work best for the small patches in this block. Cut the following: Color A (my black floral): Color B (my fuschia): Color C (my turquoise): 1 square measuring 3½ x 3½ 8 squares measuring 2 x 2 4 squares measuring 3½ x 3½ 4 squares measuring 2 x 2 4 squares measuring 2⅜ x 2⅜ Cut diagonally to create two triangles from each square 12 squares measuring 2 x 2 4 rectangles measuring 2 x 3½ Color D (my medium grey): 16 squares measuring 2 x 2 8 rectangles measuring 2 x 3½ 4 squares measuring 2⅜ x 2⅜ Cut diagonally to create two triangles from each square STARTING TO SEW 1. Place a Color B and Color D triangle right sides together and line up all edges. Pin in place. 2. Using your ¼-inch seam, stitch along the long center edge. Press seams towards the Color D triangle. Make 8 like this. OPW MembersOnly Club BOM ~ October 2011 Page 1
3. Place one of your Color B/D HSTs and one of your Color B squares (2 ) right sides together and line up all edges. 4. Using your ¼-inch seam, stitch together as shown. Press seam towards the Color B square. Make 4 like this. 3. Place one of your Color B/D HSTs and one of your Color C squares (2 ) right sides together and line up all edges. 4. Using your ¼-inch seam, stitch together as shown. Press seam towards the Color C square. Make 4 like this. 5. Place one of each of the above sections right sides together, lining up all edges and making sure that the seams butt neatly together. 6. Using your ¼-inch seam, stitch together. Press seam open. Make 4 like this. Next, we will be creating two different types of Geese units and Diamond in a Square blocks. I will be using the Crumbs Method 2 (Trim and Stitch) from the March edition of my Basic Quilting 101 series. Refer back to that, as well as the figures on the next page for more instruction. OPW MembersOnly Club BOM ~ October 2011 Page 2
7. Place a Color C square on top of a Color D rectangle, right sides together (Fig. 1). 8. Using your cutting mat and ruler, line up the first quarter-inch line of the ruler with the points of the Color C square. Trim the excess with your rotary cutter (save and stitch the crumbs for another project if desired) and notice that you have a new ¼-inch seam allowance on the outside of your points (Fig. 2). 9. Stitch from one point to the other and press seam towards the Color D triangle (Fig. 3). Fig. 1 Fig. 2 Fig Turning the rectangle as shown in Fig. 4, place a Color C square on top, right sides together. 11. Trim, stitch and press, following numbers 8 and 9 above (Fig. 5-6). Make 4 Geese units like this. Fig. 4 Fig. 5 Fig Place a Color C square on top of a Color D rectangle, right sides together (Fig. 7). 13. 8). 14. Stitch from one point to the other and press seam open (Fig. 9). Make 4 partial Geese units like this and set aside for now. Fig. 7 Fig. 8 Fig Following numbers above and the Figures below, create 4 partial Geese units that are a mirror image of the first set. Press seams open and set aside for now. Fig. 10 Fig. 11 Fig. 12 OPW MembersOnly Club BOM ~ October 2011 Page 3
16. Place a Color A square (2 ) over one corner of a Color B square (3½ ), right sides together and lining up edges (Fig. 1). 17. Using your cutting mat and ruler, trim the corner as you did for the Geese units on Page 3 (see Fig. 2 below). 18. Stitch from one point to the other and press seams towards the Color A triangle (Fig. 3). 19. Turn the whole square and place a Color D square on the opposite corner of the Color B square, right sides together (Fig. 4) and repeat steps 17 and 18, pressing towards the Color D triangle (see Fig. 5-6). Fig. 1 Fig. 2 Fig. 3 Fig Following steps above and Figures 7-8 below, continue adding Color A and Color D squares to make the corners. Press seams towards the triangles. Make 4 Diamond In A Square (DIAS) blocks like this. Fig. 5 Fig. 6 Fig. 7 Fig. 8 You should now have: 4 Corner units with Color B HSTs and Color B and C squares (did you remember to trim your HST units to the correct size of 2 inches?) 4 Geese units with Color C and Color D 8 Partial Geese units with Color C and Color D (remember that 4 triangles will face one direction while the other 4 will be a mirror image) 4 Diamond in A Square blocks with Color A, B and D 4 remaining squares of Color C that measure 2 x 2 1 remaining square of Color A that measures 3½ x 3½ OPW MembersOnly Club BOM ~ October 2011 Page 4
CONSTRUCTING THE BLOCK 1. Lay out your corner sections as shown. This includes a corner block, two partial Geese units (mirror imaged) and a Color C square (2 ). 2. Place the Color C square over the Geese unit below it, right sides together. Stitch together using your normal ¼-inch seam. Press towards the Color C square. 3. Place the remaining Geese unit over the corner block, right sides together. Stitch together and press seam towards the corner block. 4. Place the Color C square/geese unit over the large section, right sides together. Butt the seams together and pin in place. Stitch and press seam towards the corner block side. Make 4 corner sections like this. 5. Using a complete Geese unit and a DIAS block, place the Geese unit over the DIAS, right sides together. Pin in place. 6. Stitch together using your ¼-inch seam. Press towards the Geese unit. Make 4 middle sections like this. 7. Lay out 2 corner sections and a middle section as shown. One at a time, stitch a corner section to each side of the middle section using your ¼-inch seam. Press seams towards the corner sections. Make 2 units like this. OPW MembersOnly Club BOM ~ October 2011 Page 5
8. Lay out 2 middle sections and your Color A square (3½ ) as shown. One side at a time, stitch a middle section to each side of the Color A square using your ¼-inch seam. Press seams towards the Color A square. Make 1 unit like this. 9. Lay out the final three sections as shown. One at a time, stitch each outer section to the middle section using your ¼-inch seam. 10. Press seams open or to one side (your choice). And, that s it! The small pieces in this block will get easier to handle with time. This was another block that I altered to make it easier for patchwork piecing. The original block, called Star and Chain, had odd sized pieces and lots of Y-seams, which is something I avoid at all costs. Still, this is a beautiful block no matter how it s made! Your block should now measure 12½ x 12½. I hope that you have enjoyed this month s block! Be sure to check back in for November, and don t forget to download the monthly Basic Quilting 101 supplements! If you have questions or need help, contact Deirdre at support@oregonpatchworks.com For all the latest and greatest in digitized embroidery designs, be sure to visit Oregon Patchworks I would like to offer my most sincere apologies for the lateness of this installment. I have been battling a nasty sinus infection. I try to create actual quilt blocks, but when my inner ear causes my head to swim, I stay far away from the sewing machines and other sharp objects. I appreciate your patience and understanding. DeDe OPW MembersOnly Club BOM ~ October 2011 Page 6
