This month, I ll show you how to put your blocks together to create a 61 x 61 throw or a 61 x 76 twin size quilt.

One of the reasons I love quilting so much is that the options are endless! All directions given will be for the smaller, throw-size quilt top.

If you want to make larger than a twin size, just make sure you have plenty of fabric on hand and make more of everything!

This month, I ll show you how to put your blocks together to create a 61 x 61 throw or a 61 x 76 twin size quilt. Of course, you can also put your quilt top together any particular way or size that you prefer! One of the reasons I love quilting so much is that the options are endless! All directions given will be for the smaller, throw-size quilt top. I will also provide information for the larger size in parenthesis (like a knitting or crochet pattern). If you want to make larger than a twin size, just make sure you have plenty of fabric on hand and make more of everything! Graph paper is a huge help in planning your tops. To create the quilt top as shown on the following pages, you will need the following amounts of fabric (substitute your colors as needed). If you re going scrappy, just make sure you have enough fabric in each tone that you re using. COLOR A 1 yard (1¼ yards) COLOR C 1¾ yards (2 yards) COLOR B ½ yard (¾ yard) COLOR E 1 yard (1¼ yards) NOTES:

2 Cutting Instructions: Color A: Cut 8 (10) strips measuring 2 x width of fabric (40-42 ) From these strips, cut 128 (160) squares measuring 2 x 2 (16 per strip) Cut 8 strips measuring 1½ x width of fabric (40-42 ) for inner border Color B: Cut 2 strips measuring 3½ x width of fabric (40-42 ) From these strips, cut 16 (20) squares measuring 3½ x 3½ (10-11 per strip) Cut 7 (8) strips measuring 2¼ x width of fabric (40-42 ) for binding Color C: Color E: Cut 5 (6) strips measuring 3½ x width of fabric (40-42 ) From these strips, cut 12 (14) rectangles measuring 3½ x 12½ (3 per strip) AND Cut 20 (22) squares measuring 3½ x 3½ (10-11 per strip) Cut 8 strips measuring 3 x width of fabric (40-42 ) for outer border) Cut 3 strips measuring 12½ x width of fabric (40-42 ) From these strips, cut 24 (31) rectangles measuring 12½ x 3½ (10-11 per strip) Additional Fabric Needed: Backing: 1½ - 2 yards of 90 wide fabric (or 3-4 yards of 42 fabric) Batting: 1½ - 2 yards of 90 wide batting (or packaged twin batt) NOTES: 2

Following those instructions, you will use your Color E rectangles and your Color A squares to create 24 (31) blocks (top) and your Color C square and Color A square to create 16 (18) blocks (bottom).

3 Let s Get Sewing: To save on printing and memory space, I will not be providing instructions here for creating these blocks. Instead, see the BOM instructions for the crumbs method of creating geese with halfsquare triangles (from squares). Following those instructions, you will use your Color E rectangles and your Color A squares to create 24 (31) blocks (top) and your Color C square and Color A square to create 16 (18) blocks (bottom). Make 24 (31) Make 16 (18) The Quilt Tops: Below are two examples of the finished quilt tops you can create by following these instructions. The main quilt, throw size, is shown on the left, while the twin size alternate is shown on the right. Use your choice of blocks in whatever placement order you choose. Remember, for the twin quilt, you ll need to start out with 12 blocks and follow the italicized instructions in parenthesis. 61 x x 76 3

4 Your first step will be to put together 3 (4) rows of three blocks each, as shown below. Add your pieced sashing strips between blocks and at each end of the row, pressing all seams towards the BOM blocks. Create a total of 3 (4) strips and set aside for now. Your sashing rows will look like those below. You will create 4 (5) rows using the sashing block and Color B squares. Press all seams towards the Color B square. Your pieced borders will look like those below. You will use the pieced squares and Color C rectangles and squares. Make 2 of each and press all seams towards the Color C rectangles or squares. Pieced Top Border - Make 2. Pieced Side Border - Make 2. (add another Color C rectangle and pieced square for twin) You should also have your Color A and Color C strips on hand. You will stitch 2 strips together end-toend so that you ll end up with 4 strips each. These are for you outer borders and will be trimmed to size later. Press these seams open. 4

5 Now that you ve gotten all the final preparation done, you can start to stitch your quilt top together! The first step is to stitch you block rows together with the sashing strips. You will press all seams towards the sashing strip rows. It s important to pin the sashing strips to the block rows, butting up seams where they meet. Pressing the way I suggest helps the seams to stay flat and accurate. Continue until all the block rows and sashing strips are combined. Next, you ll add your Pieced Side Borders. Press these 2 seams towards the quilt center. Then, add the Pieced Top Borders. Press these 2 seams towards the border (or outside edge). Now that all the pieced borders are in place, you need to add the remaining two plain fabric borders. Find the middle of the quilt and measure the length from top to bottom. It s important to do this at the center of the quilt instead of the sides so that you can get the real measurement of the quilt top. Trim your side borders in Color A to this measurement. Pin to sides, easing to fit as necessary. Stitch and press towards outside edge. Repeat with the side-to-side measurement. Trim, pin, stitch and press. Repeat adding sides and top/bottom borders with your Color C strips. And, that s it! Your quilt top is complete and ready to be sandwiched, quilted and bound. I provided you with an amount of fabric needed to create the binding, but I won t give instruction here on doing the actual binding. I do have a great method for binding, though, so if you need assistance, please let me know. I hope that this special supplement has been helpful.
