1 Dreaming of warm waters and lazy days on the beach? Janet Rice-Bredin of Botanical Art Quilts has created this foundation pieced wall quilt to take you away on a wonderful tropical vacation any time of the year. Can't you just hear the ocean waves already? Read all instructions before beginning the project. Measurements include a " seam allowance. Caribbean Dreaming Preparing the Foundation Pieces Photocopy or trace: 9 Centre Block Sashing Block # 6 Sashing Block # 8 Flying Geese Block Check to make sure the photocopied block sizes exactly match the pattern illustrations. Cut blocks slightly on the outside of the outer dashed lines. You will trim on the dashed lines after the blocks are pieced. Prepare Fabrics From the bright green fabric cut: 9 " x " 6 " x " From the light blue fabric cut: 8 " x " (Recut into half square triangles) Cutting Diagram for Half Square Triangles 8 " x " (Cut strips " x width of fabric, then recut into " x " pieces) Materials Finished size: 6 " x 6 " Fabric for this project is from Northcott Silk's Stonehenge Caribbean collection.. m bright green fabric for centre and sashing blocks m light blue fabric for centre and sashing blocks. m aqua fabric for centre and sashing blocks. m light green fabric for Flying Geese borders. m medium green fabric for inner Flying Geese border.7 m dark green fabric for outer Flying Geese border, binding, backing and hanging sleeve 0" x 0" piece batting From the aqua fabric cut: 8 " x " (Recut into half square triangles) " x 6 " (Cut strips 6 " x width of fabric, then recut into " x 6 " pieces) " x " (Recut into half square triangles) From the light green fabric cut: 8 " x " (Recut into half square triangles) From the medium green fabric cut: 0 " x " (Cut strips " x width of fabric, then recut into " x " pieces) " x " From the dark green fabric cut: " x " (Cut strips " x width of fabric, then recut into " x " pieces) " x " strips " x width of fabric for binding 0" x 0" for backing 6 " x " for hanging sleeve 00 Janet Rice-Bredin. 2 Assembly Centre Block Make 9. Pattern on page. Finished size: 6" x 6" Follow numbering sequence on each block. Tip: Use flat-headed quilting pins when pinning the fabric to the paper. Sew using small machine stitches, to make it easier to tear away the foundation paper.. Pin a " x " bright green piece right side up in the block centre on the blank side of the foundation paper. Hold up to the light and preview from the paper side to make sure that the fabric covers all sewing lines plus " seam allowance. With the paper printed side up, fold the paper back on piece line and trim the bright green piece to " seam allowance. See diagram for an example using the Sashing Block #. Repeat for remaining sides of piece. Tip: Lay the edge of a piece of card stock on the line and fold the foundation paper over the card stock edge. It will provide a stable edge for the fold.. On the fabric side, align the diagonal edge of a light blue " half square triangle with one edge of the bright green piece. To make sure the half square triangle will completely cover the foundation paper section, fold the light blue fabric over where the " seam allowance will be to test the placement. Pin from the printed paper side and sew on the line.. If necessary, trim seam allowances to ". Sashing Block # Make. Pattern on page. Finished size: " x 6". Pin a " x 6 " aqua piece right side up in the block centres on the blank side of the foundation paper. With the paper printed side up, fold the paper back on piece line and trim the aqua piece to " seam allowance. Repeat for remaining sides of piece. Wrong side of aqua piece Tip: Use a blank piece of paper under the foundation block to protect your ironing board from the photocopy ink.. Press block on the fabric side. Repeat instructions for remaining light blue pieces.. Repeat instructions using " aqua half square triangles to complete the centre blocks. 6. Trim on the dashed lines.. On the fabric side, align the diagonal edge of a light blue piece with one edge of the aqua piece. Pin from the printed paper side and sew on the line. Repeat for remaining light blue pieces.. Patterns on page 6. Finished size: " x ". Pin a " x " green piece right side up in the block centre on the blank side of the foundation paper. With the paper printed side up, fold the paper back on piece line and trim the green piece to " seam allowance. Repeat for remaining sides of piece.. On the fabric side, align the diagonal edge of a " light green half square triangle with one edge of the green piece. Pin from the printed paper side and sew on the line. Repeat for remaining light green pieces.. If necessary, trim seam allowances to ".. Press blocks and trim on the dashed lines.. Arrange centre and sashing blocks as shown. Sew blocks together in rows, then sew rows together. Press seams in alternating directions between rows.. Carefully remove foundation papers with the exception of the outside sashing blocks.. Sew Flying Geese inner border blocks together side by side in sets of 0. Make of these sets. Sew of these sets to the top and bottom of the quilt centre.. Sew " x " medium green squares to each end of inner border sets. Sew these sets to the sides of the quilt centre. Press seams outward.. Sew Flying Geese outer border blocks together side by side in sets of. Make of these sets. Sew of these sets to the top and bottom of the quilt top. 6. Sew " x " dark green squares to each end of outer border sets. Sew these sets to the sides of the quilt top. Press seams outward. 7. 4 Finish the Quilt. Layer backing right side down, batting and quilt top right side up. Baste layers together.. Quilt as desired.. Stitch " seams on each 6 " end of the hanging sleeve piece. Fold hanging sleeve wrong sides together lengthwise. Align raw edges with the edge of the quilt top. Machine baste near the top edge. Right Right Trim to ¼" Wrong Wrong. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. 6. Line up raw edge of binding with front outside edge of quilt and sew binding to quilt edges using a " seam. Miter binding at the quilt corners and overlap ends. 7. Pin binding ends together on a angle and sew. 8. Fold binding to the back side and blind stitch in place using thread that matches the colour of the binding fabric.
