6 Completing the Quilt Note: Refer to the Exploded Lap Quilt Diagram on the next page throughout the following steps. 1. Join the completed 9 1/2 quilt blocks to make four rows with 2 x 9 1/2 purple leaf print sashing strips between the blocks only, not on the outside edges, according to the diagram. Press the seams toward the sashing strips. 2. Sew the short ends of the (8) 2 x WOF purple leaf print strips together to form one long strip. Press the seams open. Cut (5) 2 x 41 strips and (2) 2 x 44 strips. Sew the (5) 2 x 41 strips between the rows of blocks and sashing and to the top and bottom. Press the seams toward the strips. Sew the (2) 2 x 44 strips to the sides of the quilt blocks. Press the seams toward the strips. 3. Sew the short ends of the (5) 5 x WOF flowers and grass on white border strips together to form one long strip. Cut (2) 5 x 44 strips and (2) 5 x 53 strips. Sew the (2) 5 x 44 strips to the sides of the quilt. Press the seams toward the border. Sew the (2) 5 x 53 border strips to the top and bottom. Press the seams toward the borders. 4. Remove the selvage edges from the (2) 60 backing pieces. Join on the long edges with a 1/2 seam allowance. Press the seam open. Trim the side edges to make a 60 x 60 backing piece. 5. Layer a 60" x 60" piece of batting between the completed top and backing piece. Quilt as desired. Trim edges even. Bind using the 2 1/2 purple leaf print binding strips to complete the Garden Paradise lap quilt.
