Welcome to the seventh installment of my Block of the Month series for 2011! This month, we will discover a fun and easy way of combining triangles to create both half-square and quartersquare triangles in a Y-Block, which I call a Half-Quarter-Triangle square (HQST). This month, I submit to you the traditional Card Tricks block. Let s get started! FABRIC AND CUTTING You will need 5 different fabrics for this block. Depending on the look you want, you can get away with only using 3 different fabrics, one of which is the background. Instead of using similar colors for A/B and C/D, you use the same fabric for each grouping. See the final page for alternate colorations you might try. Cut the following: Color A (my blue): Color B (my teal): Color C (my fuchsia): Color D (my mauve): 4 squares measuring 5¼ x 5¼ Color D (my pale blue): For ease of cutting, all squares are the same size. This will mean that all units will need to be trimmed to size during construction. This is a great way to deal with triangles when you don t want the fuss of extra cutting before sewing. 2 STARTING TO SEW 1. Place a Color A triangle on a Color E triangle, right sides together and lining up all edges. Pin in place. 2. Using your ¼-inch seam, stitch together on the long, diagonal edge, being sure to not stretch this bias edge. A/E - Make 2 B/E - Make 2 3. Press seam open. Repeat with your triangles to create the following half-square triangles (HST): Colors A and E: Make 2 (total) Colors B and E: Make 2 Colors C and E: Make 2 Colors D and E: Make 2 Colors A and C: Make 1 Colors B and D: Make 1 C/E - Make 2 D/E - Make 2 A/C - Make 1 B/D - Make 1 Now that all these HSTs are stitched, you will need to cut some of them up again! Part of quick and easy patchwork includes cutting at strange times, and this is one of those times. First, set aside one of each of your A/E, B/E, C/E and D/E HSTs. DO NOT cut these!!! With the remaining six (6) HST squares, use the pictures below as a guide and place your blocks so the fabrics face the direction shown. Use your ruler and rotary cutter to cut each square diagonally from one corner to the other, making sure you are cutting across the seam! Place the right-hand side of each newly cut HST into a pile. 3 4. Place a Color A fabric triangle right side up. Place your Color C/E cut triangle square on top of this, right sides together. Line up the long, Note that the fabric triangle is larger. Place a Color C fabric triangle right side up. Place your Color B/E cut triangle square on top of this, right sides together and lining up long, 11. Using your ¼-inch seam, stitch together along the long, 12. Press seam open. 13. Place a Color D fabric triangle right side up. Place your Color A/E cut triangle square on top of this, right sides together and lining up the long, 14. Using your ¼-inch seam, stitch together along the long, 15. Press seam open. 16. Place your A/C and B/D cut square triangles right sides together, lining up all edges and making sure seams meet up. 17. Using your ¼-inch seam, stitch together along the long, 18. Press seams open. Now that all this stitching is done, it s time to cut again! This time, though, all we are going to do is trim each little block so that it measures 4½. Use the 45 lines on your mat and/or ruler to help you line up the diagonal seams. Trimming like this becomes second nature after awhile. If you don t get the hang of it, you can always draw the seam lines on a bit of muslin or other waste fabric. Use the drawn lines in place of your stitched ones and practice trimming on this. 4 CONSTRUCTING THE BLOCK 1. Lay out your patches so that they look like the picture to the right. Make sure that everything is facing the correct way now, before stitching. 2. Create 3 rows as shown, stitching each patch together using your ¼-inch seam. 3. Press all seams towards the Y-Blocks. 4. Stitch your rows together with your trusty ¼-inch seam as shown. 5. Press seams open or to one side (your choice). And, that s it! You ve learned a new way to piece together Quarter- Square Triangles and practiced the stitch-and-trim method, which can come in handy throughout your quilting hobby!
