3 Spiral Bargello Intermediate Size 106 cm/42 diameter Designed and made by Linda Onions Play with colour and shape for fantastic circular designs You need: *Four 70 x 115cm (28 x 44 ) fabrics *50 x 115 cm (20 x 44 ) Binding fabric 120cm (48 ) square wadding & backing Sew Easy 10 Wedge Acrylic Template *Design can be made from three Five or Six Fat Quarter packs. Cut: From each of the four fabrics cut eight 2¾ x 44 strips. (Using F/Q s - cut sixteen 2¾ x strips from each of the selected fabrics. Join these strips to make eight long strips i.e. 2¾ x 42½ approximately.) Start to Sew 1. Decide which order selected fabrics should run. Number fabrics accordingly (1, 2, 3 & 4). 2. Join your first set of four strips (1, 2, 3 & 4) using ¼ seam to make a wide band. Use a shorter stitch length than usual on your machine to avoid seams coming undone when cut through at later stages. Remember to stitch seams in opposite directions to avoid the striped band distorting. Repeat this stage a second set of strips to make two wide bands. 3. Join these two wide bands to make one set of strips with fabric running in the same order (strip set 1). Press seams downwards 4. Starting with fabric 2 repeat as for strip set 1, make a pair and then join to make strip set 2. Press seams upwards. 5. Starting with fabric 3 repeat as above to make strip set 3, press seams downwards. 6. Finally starting with fabric 4 repeat as above to make strip set 4, press seams upwards. With all sets complete you are now ready to start cutting 10 wedges. Use Sew Easy 10 Wedge Acrylic Template. Make sure you keep fabric strip sets in the correct order and the correct way up, number them at the top to help. TIP: Write numbers on masking tape and stick tape to correct strip. 2

4 Cut wedges Place the 12 line printed on the wedge on the centre seam each time you cut From each set of strips, cut nine wedges Join wedges Lay out nine wedges in order (1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1) to create a ¼ circle (fan shape). Because the seams have been pressed in opposite directions the seams will butt together, pin in place. Stitch wedges together using a ¼ seam. Second set of wedges begins with a piece from strip set 2 (2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2) Third set of wedges begins with a piece from set 3 (3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3) Fourth and final set of wedges begins with set 4 (4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4) Press all seams in one direction. Square up each section before joining to make one complete circle. Use a long ruler to help square the sides. 3

5 Make centre 1. Measure size of the hole in centre of the completed circle. Add ½ to this measurement. 2. Using EZ Circle Cut or Circle & Scallop Ruler, draw this size of circle on freezer paper and cut out. 3. Iron the freezer paper pattern to the wrong side of your chosen fabric and cut out REMEMBER to add a seam allowance. 4. Press the seam allowance over the edge of the freezer paper circle keeping the curve smooth. Fold the circle into quarters and finger press so you can see the lines. 5. Pin and tack to the centre matching pressed quarter lines to seams on circle. 6. Sew round edge of freezer paper by hand or machine. Stitch through all layers. 7. Remove freezer paper from the underside of the centre circle on completion of stitching. Complete quilt Make a quilt sandwich by layering quilt top, wadding and backing. Tack layers together using Microstitch, basting pins or by hand. Quilt through layers as desired. Bind raw edges to finish the quilt using bias binding as the edge is curved. Linda Onions 4

6 Brief Notes on Further Designs Why not try the Cylinder method when making a Bargello Spiral using Sew Easy 10 wedge? 1. Sew six 2½ strips into a band. 2. Place wedge template on band - cut at least one section from the strip before sewing it into a tube. 3. From this tube cut five 3¼ wide sections. 4. Unpick in correct order. NUMBER! Trim each section into a wedge. 5. Sew wedges together to make 1/6th of finished design. 6. Repeat Stages 1-5 five more times. Sew all six sections into a circle. Press seams on completion. Add centre as described on page 4 or 6. Why not repeat technique with Sew Easy Dresden Plate? 1. Sew four 2½ strips into a band. 2. From tube cut four 3¾ wide sections. 3. Unpick in correct order. Trim each section into a wedge. 4. Sew wedges together to make 1/5th of finished design. 5. Repeat Stages 1-4 four more times, then sew all five sections into a circle. Press seams on completion. 5

7 Cover hole in centre as described by Linda Onions page 4 or for those who don t have freezer paper - cut a circle of card to correct size. Cut circle of fabric ½ larger than card, hand gather round raw edge of fabric. Fit card inside and pull thread tightly. Press then pin in place and apply with small stitches by hand or machine taking care not to sew through card! Petal Pattern and EZ 30 Triangle Acrylic Templates Why not sew Petal Pattern shapes together with some textural inserts?! Cut eight 5 squares, fold into triangles, stitch seam, turn R/S out, insert in seam, open out and flatten into a diamond as described in instructions page 47 Tucks and Textures Two or on Daisy Delight DVD. These shapes when twiddled will create a pretty flower in the centre of the Petal Pattern design. Try the same idea with EZ 30 Triangle Acrylic: From 9 strip cut twelve 30 triangles. Cut twelve 5¾ squares for the petals. Prepare the petals as explained above. Sew all twelve sections together with one petal in each seam. Set petal approx 1½ from end of 30 triangle. Open out and play as described page 47 Tucks and Textures Two or on Daisy Delight DVD.
