1 SEW WHAT S NEW Volume 10, Issue 8 August 2012 OFFICERS: President: Alice Kellogg wonderland48@cox.net Edmond Quilt Guild P O BOX 1843, Edmond, OK Website: edmondquiltguild@yahoo.com The Edmond Quilt Guild meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm at the Memorial Road Church of Christ, 2221 East Memorial Road, Edmond, Oklahoma NQA Chapter OK871 Vice President Patti Pickhard papickhard@yahoo.com President s Report Alice Kellogg Secretary: Lisa Stroble lisastroble@sbcglobal.net Treasurer: Sharon Eaton skeaton@ionet.net Membership: Missy Reid missyreid@cox.net Programs: Brenda Esslinger blee0115@aol.com Communications: Linda Gaither lsgaither@yahoo.com Loving Touch Committee: Vicky Wyalie Vicky.wyalie@dvn.com Quilt Show Chair Sherry Massey simplelife1@cox.net Web Master: Don Lusk luskd@yahoo.com Hospitality Committee: Terri Findley tcfindley@sbcglobal.net Mission Statement: The mission of the Edmond Quilt Guild is to preserve, teach and share the history and art of quilting. I was so busy with the quilt show that it has been hard to think about my presidential duties. However, this is a very good busy. We had about 130 quilts to hang and the show was going fabulously. I hope all your friends and family came. Lack of interest caused me to cancel the retreat at Roman Nose State Park. If you paid $10 to hold your place, see our Treasurer, Sharon Eaton, for a refund. I thought it was a good idea for a group outing. Maybe we will try again at a later time to do this. I still think some of our members would love this opportunity to sew together. Wasn't it nice of Randa Parrish of Prairie Quilts to give us little presents at the last guild meeting. I challenge you to put your little English paperpieced project together and bring it to the next meeting. You may get a prize! Until next time...happy Stitching Alice Kellogg

2 Volume 10, Issue 8 Page 2 SEW WHAT S NEW Vice-President s Report Patti Pickhard Greetings Fellow EQG Members! Our July meeting of the Edmond Quilt Guild was quite a meeting. The excitement about the Quilt Show was palpable. It is so great that so many of our members shared their artistic talents and creativity with the rest of us. I loved seeing what the show had to offer. Our program for the evening was presented by Lerlene Nevaril. Lerlene has been quilting since 1979 and has become a real expert with the use of black in quilts. Her trunk show gave example after example of quilts with colors that just popped. You could see the Amish influence in her work. Lerlene has published four books including MIDNIGHT QUILTS (2012). Each quilt we saw was a double treat. The top used wonderful colors mixed with black to make stunning quilts. The double treat was seeing what Lerlene does to the backs of her quilts. She uses the "scraps" and other extra fabric from the quilt top to piece a simple design on the back. Her book entitled CREATIVE IDEAS FOR PIECE QUILT BACKS (2006) shows great ideas for not necessarily creating a second top on the back of the quilt, but using the leftover fabric to make a practical back that is simple, yet beautiful. I don't know about you, but I'm inspired to get my black fabric out and get busy sewing! Please remember that our Loving Touch committee is requesting fabric donations to replenish their stash. Please bring them to our next meeting. Sew carefully!!!! 3 Volume 10, Issue 8 Page 3 SEW WHAT S NEW Program Report Brenda Esslinger Lerlene Nevaril is quite a talented quilter. Personally, I ve always liked quilts with black backgrounds and have made quite a few over the years. After viewing her trunk show I feel like I now need to go out and purchase entire bolts of black fabric as well as other very dark colors to use as backgrounds. And I need to get more creative with my backs. Thanks, Lerlene! August 21 will feature a trunk show from Barbie Jo Paquin of Cleo and Me Designs. In addition to small quilts Barbie Jo designs embroidery and wool appliqué patterns. Her stuff is so-o-o-o-o stinkin cute! You can see her work at For our September 18 program I will take the stage yet again with ideas for turning out quick, easy, and very attractive placemats, preemie quilts, and kid quilts. With the approach of the holiday season we really need to step up our donations. These ideas will help you clean out your stash so you can have room for lots of new fabric! Elsie Campbell will be joining us on October 16 with the lecture Tweaking Tradition. She will also be teaching the workshop Seeing Stars on that day. Sign up for the workshop now while spaces last! Cost will be $25. November 20 will bring Pam Gosnell of Fun To Sew with a program on machine embroidery for quilters. This program will go beyond simply stitching out designs for the centers of blocks. Even if you don t own an embroidery machine or have any interest in getting one, you ll find plenty of ideas for tricks you can use in your projects. Don t forget the Christmas party on December 18. Plans are underway for a rip roaring good time! Brenda Esslinger The Savage Quilter Fabrics, Patterns, Books, Notions & Classes 6815 N May Ave

4 Volume 10, Issue 8 Page 4 SEW WHAT S NEW Membership Missy Reid Our last meeting was great.
