I was happy to see that we had some interest in the upcoming retreat at Roman Nose State Park. A deposit has been made for the workroom and all the information you need for the retreat is in a separate article in this newsletter. Brenda, our program person, has taken me up on the offer to have the June meeting/picnic at my house. Between the backyard and the house, there should be plenty of room for everybody to come. We have a pool, but since we will be serving tea and lemonade instead of beer and wine, I ask that there be no skinny dipping. For those of you that are on intimate terms with my dog, Clyde, be assured that he will be with my daughter, who lives on the other side of Edmond. I am looking forward this picnic and I hope you are too. Three people have turned in quilt show entries. Thank you, ladies. I am confident that there will be plenty of entries turned into me at the May meeting. I will be at a back table with a basket or box. Don't let the show committee down. Without quilts, we don't have a show! I guess you know by now that the phone call that interrupted my president's report at the meeting was staged. However, the joke was not just on you. It was on us too. The call did not come from a board member as planned. It really was Lisa's mother calling her. HA! But, I think we made a point that we are having a quilt show and the best advertising is YOU. Talk it up with your friends and family. Until next time...happy Stitching Alice Kellogg

2 Volume 10, Issue 5 Page 2 SEW WHAT S NEW Vice-President s Report Patti Pickhard Our April meeting was fabulous, in my humble opinion. We had seven visitors, Robin Hill from The Stitching Post as our vendor, and Sally Collins was our program speaker. WOW! Sally challenged us to achieve quality workmanship in any scale, to help us critique and correct our work, to improve our technical skills, and most importantly, to find joy and value in the process. It isn't necessarily important to see how many quilts we can make, but to savor the process of HOW we make our quilts. Each quilt we make teaches us something...a new technique, a way to fix an "oops", the fun of applique, the challenge of sewing consistent 1/4 inch seams. There is joy to be found in the process as well as in the enjoyment of the quilt itself. I am inspired to not be in such a rush to finish projects, but to be mindful of my quilting journey. Thank you, Sally! I trust that you are all hard at work on your entries for our quilt show. You may turn in your entry information, permission to photograph, the quilt story, and the all important photo at our May 15 meeting for each entry (3 maximum). If you cannot make that meeting, please mail your entries by MAY 21, I hope to see each of you at our May meeting. Until then, joyful quilting is the goal! 3 Volume 10, Issue 5 Page 3 SEW WHAT S NEW Program Report Brenda Esslinger Sally Collins was awesome. Such perfection in her piecing and such tiny pieces of fabric! If you weren t there to see it you really missed something special. Our May meeting will feature Michelle Schroeder of Sooner Quilts in Guthrie. She will be presenting a trunk show of the latest and best in her shop as well as giving us all a preview of what s coming for the Road to Oklahoma Shop Hop. You won t want to miss this! For our June meeting we are planning a pool party and picnic at Alice Kellogg s house. Dig out that swim suit and plan to bring a side dish or dessert to share with the group. Honest, we promise not to make fun of how you look in your suit. We don t look any better! Elsie Campbell will be joining us on October 16 with the lecture Tweaking Tradition. She will also be teaching the workshop Seeing Stars on that day. Sign up for the workshop will begin at the May meeting. Cost will be $25. I am busy working on plans for the rest of this year s programs as well as the first few months of Speaking of 2013 If you have an interest in being our guild s next Program Chairman it s not too early to start thinking about it. 4 Volume 10, Issue 5 Page 4 SEW WHAT S NEW Membership Missy Reid What a great meeting! Sally Collins quilts were amaaaaazing! At our last meeting we had 83 members and 6 visitors. We have 1 new member Amy Veitch. Welcome Amy and all visitors. We are glad you joined us. We now have 160 members and always room for more! By now you should have received an with the new roster attached. Look for it in your mailbox. You ve got mail! Remember to bring your name tags this month, Missy Reid Quilt Show Update Sherry Massey Have you been selling raffle tickets!!!!!! Please bring in your money at the next meeting and if you need more tickets please let Brenda Esslinger know. It won't be too long before you will be able to sign up to volunteer for the show itself. Be thinking about where you want to serve. Brenda will need help at the raffle quilt table; roamers will be needed on the floor to help visitors and answer questions; hospitality will need your donations of food and time and this year - in response to requests from vendors - we will have soda for them. We really treat our vendors well and they want to return show after show, so your help is important. More volunteer information will be available as the date draws closer. We also need your help with demos. Please think about a simple technique that you would be willing to share with new quilters. If you're not comfortable doing the demo yourself, maybe someone in your small group would be! Mull it over and get in touch with Gailynn Phelps at the April meeting. Gailynn Phelps is continuing to gather information and develop ideas for demos at the show. Please contact her if you have any suggestions or would be willing to do a demonstration during the show. This is a wonderful way to bring new members into the guild and to help new quilters improve their skills. Don t be shy! Appearing soon on the EQG website: a.pdf file of the quilt show bookmarks! 5 Volume 10, Issue 5 Page 5 SEW WHAT S NEW Loving Touch Vicky Wyalie Can you believe... I ve finally picked up my lower jaw after last months meeting. Absolutely fabulous quilts. Not much fabric goes to waste with pieces that tiny. And speaking of tiny...let s remember those very tiny special new additions coming into this world a bit too early by making a 22 X 22 preemie quilt. Another great way to put your bits of fabric to use would be a placemat (14 X 18) for the meal recipients of the Edmond Mobile Meals program. I know several of the dear people who receive meals from the Edmond Mobile Meals program and many times this is there only contact with another person during the week. What a nice surprise to receive a work of art to put on your TV tray as you eat your meal. Other members of our community who are assisted by the Edmond Hope Center would enjoy snuggling up in a quilt made by you(40 ish X 45 ish). 7 Volume 10, Issue 5 Page 7 SEW WHAT S NEW Edmond Quilt Guild's First Retreat Ever been on a quilt retreat? Now is your chance to experience one of the best quilter's bonding (not binding) events. Imagine being locked in a room with 19 other like-minded women and sewing to your heart's content. Where: Roman Nose State Park (just north of Watonga, OK) When: September 28 & 29, 2012 Time: 8 a.m. Friday until 8 p.m. Saturday A $10 deposit will hold your place at this event. Even though we have reserved a block of rooms, you are responsible for reserving your own room. Call and tell them you are with the Edmond Quilt Guild. The rooms at the lodge will hold 2 comfortably or 3 if you don't mind sharing a queen-size bed. They are very nice, new rooms. Roman Nose also has "rustic" cabins. They are old, but functional. There is a bedroom with a regular double bed and a hide-a-bed in the living area, full kitchenette including a coffee pot and toaster, bathroom with shower. The cost is about the same. You will be spending the night on Friday. We leave it up to you if you want to spend the night Thursday night and/or Saturday night. As of this writing, quilters will work on their own projects. If I hear from you that you would like something special to work on, I can do a mystery quilt or teach a technique, so let me hear from you on this subject. There will be more information as the time grows closer and also a help sheet when you sign up.

However, some of our members were frustrated and angry that they could not focus on Sally. Why? Because they were distracted by separate conversations. We are happy that our members use EQG as a social outlet, but we have plenty of time for socializing before and after the meeting. We are all adults and our mothers have taught us better manners than to talk and whisper throughout the lecture. I can tell you from personal experience how unnerving it is when there are disruptions in the crowd. I had nun, Sister Josephine, in school that had a paddle ball, without the ball, that she used on the palms of our hands if someone was talking when she was trying to teach. Don't make me come get you! Please save your personal conversations for a later time.

9 Volume 10, Issue 5 Page 9 SEW WHAT S NEW The Grand Lake O' the Cherokees Quilt Guild of Grove is sponsoring a bus trip to the AQS Quilt Show and Contest in Des Moines, Iowa, October 3-6, We would like to extend an invitation to anyone wanting to join in the fun. The bus will originate in Tulsa and will pick up passengers along I-44. We currently have stops set for Tulsa, Claremore and Grove. We will stop at two quilt shops on the way up and two quilt shops on the way back. We will be staying in the downtown area within walking distance of the Quilt Show.
