SEW WHAT S NEW Edmond Quilt Guild P O BOX 1843, Edmond, OK Website: edmondquiltguild@yahoo.com The Edmond Quilt Guild meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm at the Memorial Road Church of Christ, President s Report Bonnie Bowman NQA Chapter OK871 Where do you get your quilting inspiration? For many of us, it s browsing through quilt shops, viewing shop samples, new lines of fabrics or checking out the newest books and patterns. If you re like me, you spend a lot of time wondering where the folks that design that fabric line and those books and patterns get their inspiration. Take a step in a new direction and try finding your own inspiration outside of the normal copy-cat environment of your magazine subscriptions and the latest block of the month club. There is a world of places you can seek new ideas and be influenced in a whole new way. Instead of instinctively moving to the quilt magazine rack, stop a few steps short and browse through the art magazines. Many times the art in these magazines looks like it could have been inspired from an old antique quilt top or a rustic Gee s Bend quilt. You might find a painting technique that translates well into applying designs to quilt surfaces. Does a 3- demensional piece of art give you a new idea for a quilt edge technique? Are the colors used together so outrageous together that you know they d work fantastically in making your new design idea pop? Next, stroll through the vast array of computer clip art available used for not only desktop publishing but card and letter designs. Suddenly, you see designs that translate into quilting designs or Celtic shapes that can be used for appliqué designs. Does it sound too far-fetched to study the glass tile at a design center? How big a leap from that concept was turning twenty? Whether you love the graphic sharp-edged lines of geometrics or the sultry curves of things in nature like stones, eggs, sun and moon, you will see them all around you if you start noticing your environment. It occurred to me while watching an old movie (my favorite pastime besides quilting) that many times objects in a scene contain elements of a terrific quilt design. There is a subway scene in one movie I watched recently that had a glorious tile design in red and white that is perfect for a 2-color quilt. In another movie, I was inspired by the woven triangular design on a towel hanging behind the murderer. I was once inspired by a Kathryn Hepburn and Spencer Tracey movie to design a quilt from the bathrobe she was wearing in once scene. I keep a pencil and pad next to my bed so I can draw ideas quickly before I lose a scene. You already know about copying tiles in chapels and in streets but how about incorporating a manhole cover? If you ve seen some of the ones in our older cities, you know they can be quite elaborate. Start small and challenge yourself to make at least one small quilt without a pattern in mind, but draw into it the inspiration you got from something you found from an unexpected source. Ribbons were given out in four categories: most creative to Bonnie Bowman, most legible to Linda Bonham, most colorful to Delma Maltby and best embellishment to Barb Buettner. It was great fun to wander through and see how creative you fabulous people are. Please help our newer members by continuing to wear your name tags. Our other Challenge winner for the month in the UFO contest was Lee Grey. She finished only one quilt but what a doozy! Her quilted garnered 57 points. I encourage everyone to take stock and keep quilting. We are mid way through the UFO Challenge and don t want to see any jet lag next month. I noticed at show and share we had several very large quilts and thought I d throw out a tip for your consideration. When ironing a large quilt top or back, put the iron on an extension cord and place two ironing boards end to end. You can work down the whole quilt at once. To keep the quilt from sliding off the ironing board use several large corsage pins to hold the quilt in place while you iron the edges. Leave the pins on the end of your ironing board for the next quilt. Press On, Becky Beierle

Some of them may have a short fuse, time-wise, as is the case in this newsletter. If you like to enter quilt shows, this feature is for you! We are getting traffic at the guild s new address, edmondquiltguild@yahoo.com. I am the screener of these s and forward them to others for response, as appropriate. The address is also on our masthead. If you have any guild-related questions but aren t sure to whom they should be directed, please use this address and we ll get it to the right person. I am pleased to report that the readership of our Constant Contact s to you has increased significantly. We re up to 75% from the initial 50%. I hope you are finding our reminder blast helpful. As changes are made as to how we communicate on EQG business, I ll keep you posted. He was entertaining, informative, a close lookalike to George Clooney, and I hope he inspired you to step out of your box and try something different! May 8 - May 18 - June 15 - July 20 - Aug 17 - SATURDAY WORKSHOP!! Our own published Brenda Esslinger will present a Fractures workshop here in our meeting space at the church. There is a link to Brenda s website on the EQG website. Click on her link to see pictures of what students have completed as well as many of Brenda s fractured quilts. This will be our last Saturday workshop offering this year. Brenda Esslinger will lecture on the Fractures method of quiltmaking. We are pleased to present Ami Simms for a combined lecture and workshop with the Norman Quilt Guild. Her lecture topic is How NOT to Make a Prize-Winning Quilt, and the lecture will be in the Atkinson Theater at Rose State College. Directions will be available well in advance of the lecture. The workshop topic will be String Quilts. The workshop will be held at Quilters Corner in Midwest City. Ami has a unique approach to string quilts that we think many of you will enjoy. We are planning an indoor picnic and games. Relax and have fun! Kim Cronin Bunchuck will lecture and present a workshop on Sunbonnet Sue. Her website is the amazingly easy to remember Her lecture begins in the late 1800s with very early redwork Sunbonnet Sues, progresses to Depression-era Sues, kit Sues, feedsack Sues and to the modern sue quilts, even some Bad Sue quilts. She says her lecture is part history, part trunk show, and a lot of fun! Her workshop will be Three ways to Appliqué with Sunbonnet Sue. If you need a reminder; add your and we can do that for you. Also, we will start a volunteer list during the May meeting so start thinking about where and when you want to volunteer remember: without you the show will never happen. I will be posting a list of vendors to the website soon. If there is a group that you would like us to send a special invitation to, please let me know so we can get that done. Also, for everyone going to the Ami Simms lecture let s all wear those t-shirts...show your support for the show!!!! And if you want a bandana, let me know and I will get you one!!!! 8 Volume 8, Issue 5 Page 8 SEW WHAT S NEW Hospitality Report Barb Buettner I would like to start by thanking each member of my committee for helping make new members feel welcome. And if you are reading this, you are a member of my committee! That's right, the whole membership is involved in hospitality. So, if you see a member wearing a fat corsage at our next meeting, please, take time to greet them and make them feel comfortable. Try to remember your first meeting and how overwhelming it can be to walk into such a large group without knowing anyone. It just might be your smile and interest that convinces them that they want to be involved with our guild! Also, as noted at our April meeting, we are in the process of organizing the Edmond quilting small groups (Bees). If you are already in a Bee, please have one member contact me with a bit of information on your group (name, when you meet, how many members, open or closed membership, etc.). If you would like to become involved in a Bee and did not fill out and return an interest form at our April meeting, please contact me as well. Bees can be a great way of making new friends, learning new techniques, and having more fun!! Barb Buettner Loving Touch Vicky Wyalie If you haven t picked up a couple of labels for your Loving Touch projects be sure to stop by the table and do so. A big thank you to Candy Graham for printing, washing, and cutting these so they are available. We have 30 birthday placemats to be distributed to the Edmond Mobile Meals organization. We are such a diverse group of artist. We ll be needing these throughout the year so whenever you can provide one or two or more they will be most appreciated. The placemats are to be 18 X 14 in size. Preemie quilts should be 22 X 22. Please add the new guild label to your finished quilt to allow us a more timely delivery to the various hospitals - OU Children s NICU unit, Mercy Hospital and Baptist Hospital NICU s. We re implementing a new system to better track the guilds fabrics we group together for you to select and quilt for Loving Touch. Please be sure to complete the form when you take a packet. When the completed item is returned please allow us to pull the check out form and mark it accordingly. If for any reason you take a packet and do not have time to complete your project PLEASE return the item to the guild. Doesn t matter if you have started or are almost finished the project, we can take it from there. If you have completed an item using your own fabrics, we would appreciate it if you would please fill out a form as you turn in your project. Maybe we ll be using these for a future drawing.
