Edmond Quilt Guild P O BOX 1843, Edmond, OK Website : The Edmond Quilt Guild meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm at the Memorial Road Church of Christ, 2221 East Memorial Road, Edmond, Oklahoma President s Report- Nancy Forrest NQA Chapter OK871 Well, I find it hard to believe that the year is almost over (I know: don t rush it!) and my tenure as president is almost half over. We have rocked and rolled and kept the guild moving along, thanks to the Board of Directors and Quilt Show chair. It s been exciting and fun and I am ever so grateful to those individuals (Patti Ann Pickhard, Vice President; Lisa Stroble, Secretary; Missy Reid, Membership; and Linda Gaither, Communications.). Our organization is successful because people volunteer their time to make it so. It is not always a cakewalk but they volunteer nonetheless. Without volunteers, our guild would not be as good or as fun as it is. Unless you have been behind the scenes of the operation, you cannot appreciate the amount of dedication it takes to make everything work. Unfortunately, people were not falling all over themselves to volunteer or be volunteered at our election in October. It would be fun sometime if they did...gosh, we might even be able to have a ballot with choices on it!...but we had volunteers for all of the vacancies and that, in the end, is what counts. So a heartfelt thank you from me (and the people they are replacing, I am sure!) to our new Vice President, Sherry Bellack; Secretary, Lee Gray; Membership, Alice Kellogg; and, Communications, Joyce Wolfe. We ll install them at our December meeting before we party so they can start the new year off with a bang. Bonnie Bowman and Judy Elliott traveled to Fort Worth mid-october to sell raffle quilt tickets at the Sewing and Quilt Expo for three days. I joined them for two of the three days and it was a lot of fun. We sold over 400 tickets (and over 600 to date), mostly one ticket at a time; everyone loved it. And we also may have been successful in recruiting some new members from the Edmond Area. Judy may have missed her calling: she outsold both Bonnie and me. I am also grateful to these tireless volunteers who not only were instrumental in getting the quilt made but were willing to give up five days (including two for travel) to represent our guild and sell tickets in Texas at their own expense. A HUGE thank you Bonnie and Judy! So back to volunteering. The next opportunity will be in January, selling raffle tickets at the Winter Quilt Show in Oklahoma City. If you are interested, please let Bonnie Know. We ll break out into shorter shifts so you can sell tickets and see the show! If I really, really need to twist your arm, I will. Look for more information on this opportunity in another newsletter. Keep yourself in stitches and have a great month!
2 Volume 11, Issue 11 Page 2 SEW WHAT S NEW Vice-President s Report Patti Pickhard It sure was wonderful seeing all of you at this month's guild meeting. I was really happy to see that so many people are going to be entering next month's challenge! It isn't too late for any of you. The quilts can be any size, any color, any holiday (even my birthday would count as a holiday to some). Bring one or as many as you'd like. Consider making placemats for Loving Touch or getting a holiday gift finished BEFORE Thanksgiving! What a rush that would be! The Blast we send out just prior to the meeting will give details on how to give us your entries for the evening's festivities. This month's programs featured the inspiration of Mary DeBois who is a master at using precuts to make her quilt. She talked about the importance of knowing your fabrics. Just because a precut is pre-cut does not mean it is exactly as advertised. Make sure to check those measurements for yourself! Especially with those 5 inch squares and 10 inch squares - measure them for yourselves! She showed us several examples of making quilts such as the 1600 quilt - but adding something to make it uniquely hers - like a column of sandals with a beach print. Talk about a happy quilt! I also appreciated that Mary let us know that she can identify with many of us who have UFOs at home. She not only has UFOs, but she has USOs! (Unstarted Objects) There is just not enough time in the day to get all those quilts made! UGH! Anyway, I trust that you all enjoyed the program as much as I did. Thanks, Mary, for being such an inspiration to us all! I hope you all have a wonderfully spooky Halloween, and we'll see you next month! Keep on sewin'! Patti Ann Pickhard Charlotte Hickman s Springtime Woodlands, Best in show at EQG in nd place in Pictorial Quilts at MQS 2013, traveling exhibit Hands All Around More award winning quilt pictures on page 12 and 13
3 Volume 11, Issue 11 Page 3 SEW WHAT S NEW Program Report Judy Elliott Now we will all know what to do with all our pre-cuts! So who's coming next?. November 19, Donna Skvarla is presenting a program on Depression Era quilts. She will also be conducting appraisals for anyone interested. The appraisals will be done before the meeting at schedule times and cost $45, payable to Donna. Please let me know if you would like one as the list is starting to grow! I will bring a sign up list for the next meetings. If you can't be there, you can get your quilt and money to me before that date and I will supervise the appraisal for you. Slots are filling up so let me know or sign up! December 17, Party!!! Our annual holiday party is in the planning stages. Stay tuned Upcoming for 2014 January will be a "Making it for the Market" time. Wendy Wells, quilt show co-chair, will be discussing this in more detail in future newsletters, but it is sure to be great fun, having a sit-n-sew for the day that will benefit the Artisan's Market for the Quilt Show. She plans to have some quick and easy kits to make along with other fun ideas for people to sew. February will be Susan Masters, talking about her technique of Folded Facets March will bring us Judy Taylor, certified quilt judge. She will talk about "Quilt Show Judging - Critic vs. Criticism" and talk about the process of judging quilts in a show. FYI Judy will be one of the NQA judges for our show in July Come to this guild meeting and get to know Judy - then it won't be so scary to entering your quilts in the show! April will be Kim Diehl - bringing us a wonderful trunk show and a workshop on her style of machine appliqué! FYI. Our 2014 Raffle Quilt comes from one of Kim's patterns by permission. May will be Bonnie Bowman - teaching us how to use Ritz dye to dye fabric and change fabric by over-dying it. June - Summer Break and no meeting July will be Barb Eikmeier and "It's All in The Sashings", helping us learn what to do with orphan blocks through beautiful sashings both simple and complex. July 25th and July 26th QUILT SHOW!!! August - TBA September will bring Laura Wasilowski and her wonderfully funny story of being a serial quilter. She will also have a workshop for members. October - TBA November - TBA December - Annual Holiday Party

9 Volume 11, Issue 11 Page 9 SEW WHAT S NEW Quilt Show News - Sue Esparza The show committee is on simmer, we're cooking slowly, We will come to a rolling boil with regular monthly meetings beginning in January. Still have several tshirts that were not picked up in October. Remember that if you wear your guild shirt to the meeting, you have a chance at a separate prize drawing. I will bring them again to distribute in November or find me to get it before. We will begin orders again in March-April-May to distribute in July. Everyone should have at least one shirt by show time!!" And the Winner Is... While in Fort Worth, we stopped at a local book store to get some quilty reading. I picked up a copy of International Quilt Festival Quilt Scene. As I thumbed through the magazine there on page 23 was Cherrie Hampton s Oklahoma Windsong, which will be part of Quilts: A world of Beauty at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. In addition, this quilt won: Peoples Choice - EQG 2012; Best Quilting Award - Fiber Arts of Oklahoma 2012; Best of Show - Oklahoma State Fair 2012; First Place AQS Wall Quilt First Time Entry; Honorable Mention 2013 NQA; featured in AQS Magazine July 2013; featured in AQS 2014 Calendar; Winner Circle IQF 2013; Traveling Exhibition IQA ; Featured in IQA Magazine October Cherrie will have her quilt, Rhododendron, in the In Full Bloom exhibit in Houston this year and in the traveling exhibit as well. Cherrie has had a busy, award-filled year. Her quilt, Water Bearer, was featured in the Sacred Threads 2013 and published in Sacred Threads Exhibition Her quilt, Cultivator, also was included in this exhibit and publication but additionally was selected as one of 39 pieces chosen from 231 for Omaha Sacred Threads Her quilt, Wild Goslings, just won 2nd Place at the Pacific International Quilt Show XXII 2013; it took Best of Show at the Oklahoma State Fair Jewels of Lake Como won First Place in the Prairie Quilt Challenge 2011 and First Place at the EQG 2012 show. It is a triptych completed by Cherrie, Sharon Banta and Millicent Gillogly and it also garnered first pace at 2nd Place at NQA The Edmond Quilt Guild will be well represented in Houston. In addition to Cherrie, Charlotte Hickman s Springtime Woodlands, which took best in show at EQG in 2012 and second place in Pictorial Quilts at MQS 2013, will be in the Hands All Around exhibit and the traveling exhibit. If you win an award somewhere...sometime, please be sure to let us know. You are an inspiration to others who tiptoe through the craft of quilting.

11 Volume 11, Issue 11 Page 11 SEW WHAT S NEW There s an App for That! If you have a smart phone, have you ever explored the apps available for quilting and/or sewing? Many of them are free! For example, the iphone App Store has an app by Robert Kaufman called The Quilter s Little Helper, Essential Quilting Calculations. It is free. With this app you can calculate fabric, backing and batting, piece count, pieces to yardage area, biding, border yardage, square-in-a-square and set-in and corner triangles in either inches or metric. Of course, there is also information about Robert Kaufman s latest collections and where to buy. Pretty cool! Sit and Sew Sit and Sew will be November 19 th in our meeting room at the Memorial Road Church of Christ. It will start at 1p.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. Tables will be set up, but you will need to bring whatever sewing supplies you need and a long extension cord so you can power it (unless you have a hand crank model!). Come join us and expand your circle of quilting friends!
