All of the challenge quilts were laid out on tables, and everyone in attendance voted for their favorite. Due to a tie, we all voted again for the tie-breaker. The challenge was organized and directed by Dolores Keaton. Thank you, Dolores! 3 Circle in the Square Quilters Nov Page 3 Program Notes Carol Peck January Tools of the Trade by Candy Grisham Not all of the tools we quilters use come from the fabric store. Although a complete list of the tools presented in this lively talk will be in the newsletter after the program, you will not want to miss it. Special attendance prizes are included. Candy is a well-known fiber artist from this area with a self-taught quilting background. Her work has been shown in many juried shows nationally, regionally and locally. March Small Town Girl to Designer by Dawn Heese Dawn will present a trunk show of around 40 quilts. She will tell her story of how she got into quilting and ended up with it as her profession. She will begin with her first quilt and then move through her designs until today. May Rags and Satin by Pat Owoc Pat will present a trunk show and lecture, really something everyone should look forward to hearing.

4 Circle in the Square Quilters Nov Page 4 Piecing Group was hosted by Sandy Etheridge, who had us add sashing to her blocks for her redwork Christmas quilt. We laid out the blocks on her bed, and it s coming along nicely! Laura Falk showed blocks for a fall table runner, left below. Gwen Clopton showed the Glorified Nine Patch Quilt of Valor, blocks pieced by Piecing Group, center below. Kim Donermeyer asked for design input about borders for her sunny table runner, right below. October Piecing Group Sandy quilted Mary Carr s beautiful Storm at Sea/Snail s Trail quilt, and we all admired the quilting, below.

5 Circle in the Square Quilters Nov Page 5 Council Meeting Minutes, Oct. 11, 2016 Jan Ochterbeck Present: Cherie Moore, Carol Peck, Lois Hays, Jeanne Wilton, Jan Ochterbeck Reports President, Cherie Moore: Cherie is planning to have some discussion at the October meeting about the quilt show and the need for volunteers to step up. Vice President/Programs, Carol Peck: Carol has January & March programs planned with Candy Grisham and Dawn Heese, and has booked Pat Owoc for May. Treasurer, Lois Hays: A check from the U City Historical Society has been received for the 2015 quilt show, bringing our current treasury balance to $4584. Newsletter, Jan Ochterbeck: It was brought to Jan's attention that many did not get the October newsletter. Jan will resend it and look into the problem. Discussions Quilt Show: Cherie will lead discussion at the October meeting to get feedback about last year's show and determine direction for the next show. Questions will include: - Do we want to have a show? Why? - What kind of show should it be, the same kind of juried/judged show, or something different? - How can we get more people to volunteer to make the show happen? October Program - Guild Challenge: Carol will confirm plans with challenge chair Dolores Keaton. It was suggested that since the quilts are small, that they should all be laid out on tables for everyone to see and vote on. - Orphan Adoption Event: It was decided to lay out all the "orphan" items on tables and give everyone a chance to describe what they brought and try to "sell" it so someone would take it. Announcements Next Social Meeting: Thanksgiving is late enough that we could have a social meeting in November if someone volunteers. If no one volunteers, there will not be a social meeting. Newsletter Deadline: Oct. 26 for November issue; no December issue; Dec. 26 for January issue Snippets and Scraps - New Membership Chair: Debbie Carnes has graciously accepted the position of Membership Chair for the remainder of the term. - Quilts of Valor: Gwen Clopton announced a need for Quilts of Valor for a Returning Warrior event in St Louis next spring. Contact Gwen (gclopton@hotmail.com) if you would like to help. - Jane Coons announced that Batiks Plus, located at 1322 Ashby Rd, (off Baur Road) is now open to the public for more information - Ann Pannuto has several hooked rug pieces in the current exhibition of the Artists Guild of St. Louis, located in the old famous Barr building in Clayton. - Treasurer s Report: Balance of $4577

7 Circle in the Square Quilters Nov Page 7 Meeting Minutes, October 18, 2006 Vivienne Mazzotta Jan s Snowballs Karen s Texas Quilt Jan s Pattern Jane s Flea Market Find Cherie Moore started the meeting at 7:15 and began the discussion of whether there should be changes concerning the quilt show, as there currently isn t a leader. There was much discussion ranging from not having the quilt show to eliminating the workshop, to making it a quilt only show. A committee of Gwen Clopton, Carol Peck, Carolyn Birge and Suzanne Marshall have agreed to work on a proposal to bring back to the group at the January meeting. Lois Hays stated we have a balance of $4,577 which includes a check from the Historical Society for $923 from the 2015 quilt show. Lois Hays, Jeanne Wilton, and Carol Peck worked on the beautiful Raffle Quilt and Jane Coons will be quilting it in January. Jan Ochterbeck stated that she has had trouble with the distribution of newsletters so if you need to have a newsletter, please let Jan know. Debbie Carnes has agreed to be our Membership Chair Person and all agreed she will be a marvelous addition to our leadership group. Dolores Keaton displayed all the challenge quilts and announced the winners. First prize went to Lois Hays, Ann Pannuto won second prize and Dolores Keaton won third prize. Photos of all the works with the owners were taken. Gwen Clopton announced that the CSQ website has been updated and close up snippets of members' quilts will be featured (always with the member's permission) on the rotating header of the site. Kudos to Ann Pannuto and Jane Coons. Ann belongs to the Rug Hooking Guild and there will be a display in the old Famous Barr place. Jane and her five-year-old granddaughter have works that were accepted into the Springfield, IL MQS judged quilt show. Gwen Clopton volunteered her home for the November 16th Social Meeting. Please bring two bags to take home some fabrics that she has adopted. Members brought some orphan projects and all were thrilled to adopt these items. Only two orphans were left to return to the orphanage. Gwen Clopton and Carolyn Birge are working on the Charity Quilt Project. They received all of the blocks back, so thanks to all who helped out. The meeting adjoined at 9:00. Submitted by Vivienne Mazzotta November Social Meeting Gwen Clopton has graciously offered to host the November social meeting. She asks that we each bring a plastic bag or two, to take home excess fabrics that were donated to her.

8 Circle in the Square Quilters Nov Page 8 Orphan Adoption Event, Oct, 18, 2016 The first Orphan Adoption Event was held at the October meeting and was very successful. Members were invited to bring any orphan blocks, UFOs, patterns, etc. except fabric, and offer them for adoption to a new home. Almost all the items that were brought found new homes. Orphans rehomed ranged from individual blocks to UFOs to thread, patterns, and antique blocks. All the items shown here went to new homes.

9 Circle in the Square Quilters Nov Page 9 CSQ Fundraiser Quilt Based on the assumption that we will have a quilt show in 2017, the raffle quilt for it has long been underway. Under the direction of Lois Hays with assistance from Jeanne Wilton, the top was pieced and passed to Carol Peck, who added borders. Jane Coons will quilt it after the first of the year.
