(doing a happy dance) We have a quilt show chairman! Sherry Massey has stepped up to the plate to head up our quilt show committee. Thank you, Sherry. I am confident you will do an excellent job. Here is your chance to make a difference in the guild, meet new people and have fun to boot. Volunteer to be on the quilt show committee. Sherry needs to fill her positions quickly so that we can get started on our plans. Give her a call to find out what she needs and if you can help I attended the first meeting of the Oklahoma Quilt Network. It was a morning meeting followed by a luncheon hosted by the First Capital Quilters of Guthrie. The meeting was very informative and I can see great potential for this group. One of the big advantages of this organization is that we know what other guilds are doing and can do a better job of sharing expenses and having successful quilt shows and other events. Their next meeting is October 1 and I volunteered the Edmond Quilt Guild to host it. We will be responsible for coffee (and perhaps a little snack before the meeting and the lunch after the meeting. First Capital Quilters did a really good job; I told them they would be a hard act to follow, but we can do it! Until next time... Happy Stitching! Alice Kellogg

2 Volume 9, Issue 5 Page 2 SEW WHAT S NEW Vice-President s Report Becky Beierle We were very fortunate to have Debbie Maddy as our guest speaker in April. I was amazed by the number of quilts she brought to show us. Seven suitcases - all packed full! Since she drove here (she lives in Texas) it gave us the chance to see so many of her beautiful quilts. She shared examples of her patterns in multiple sizes and color ways. It was quite a treat to behold. Thank you to all those who participated in the Nursery Rhyme Challenge. It was fun to see all the interpretations and pin ribbons on the winners. From the moon that lit up to the little muffet on a tuffet to the rhymes we newly discovered, they were all great. 3 Volume 9, Issue 5 Page 3 SEW WHAT S NEW Program Report - Brenda Esslinger If you missed the April meeting you missed a great program. Debbie Maddy was very inspirational with her wide variety of quilts that are easy enough for a beginner to master yet look complicated enough to please the masters. A special thanks to everyone who helped out with setting up the room between the workshop and meeting as well as all of those who took on the monumental task of holding and folding the quilts. The subject of our May program will be How to Shop Hop Like a Pro. The Road to Oklahoma Shop Hop is coming up June 9-10 and we ll be giving you lots of hints on how to make your hop a winning experience. With today s gas prices it s important to hop with a plan. Whether you ve hopped before or not there will be some not to be missed information. In June we will be having our annual guild picnic. Since we cannot have our regular meeting room during the month of June the picnic will be held in the yard at Sooner Quilts. The shop will be open that night so be sure to bring some extra spending money along with a lawn chair and a side dish or dessert to share. July will feature our own Marilyn Karper with her advice on how to hire a long arm quilter. Our October speaker will be Mickey Depre. Her lecture will be Colorific Quilts and her workshop will be Colorforms for Grownups Designing your own fabric. The fee for this workshop will also be $25 plus you will need to purchase a $17 kit. But I m not complaining if you re not complaining! I ve worked with a couple of members to try to figure out why they are not receiving s and my hope is that their issues are resolved. So...I m leaving it in your hands. If you are not getting s, let me know; if I don t hear from you, I ll assume everything is hunky-dory. I ve written an article (see page 9) that I am hopeful will explain why you may not see me or Sew Who Sews? for a while. I ll still be doing the newsletter (what is the sound of one hand typing?) and I will be with you in spirit, if not in body. 8 Volume 9, Issue 5 Page 8 SEW WHAT S NEW Loving Touch Vicky Wyalie Isn t it grand to see our guild growing and thriving? Welcome New Members! What is Loving Touch? We are a committee within the Edmond Quilt Guild that is responsible for collecting donations of quilting supplies (fabric, batting, etc.), redistributing the donations to guild members to create works of art that are returned to the committee for distribution to organizations in our community. Did you know - you are a ray of sunshine? You are. The Loving Touch committee would love for every one of you to 'shine' on the Edmond Community and surrounding area. As a quilt guild we look for projects that allow us to learn new techniques or sharpen our skills while creating a glowing work of art to share with others Preemie Quilts 22 X 22 (finish size quilted and bound) Placemats 18 X 14 (finished size quilted and bound) Youth Quilts approximately 40 X 44 (finished quilted and bound) "Birthday placemats (18" X 14") will be distributed to the Edmond Mobile Meals organization and the preemie quilts (22" X 22") which are distributed to various hospitals - OU Children s NICU unit, Mercy Hospital and Baptist Hospital NICU s. The youth quilts are donated to the Edmond Hope Center. Please remember to pick up labels and attach them prior to turning in your ray of sunshine. If for any reason you have picked up a Loving Touch quilt packet and do not have time to complete your project PLEASE return the item to the guild. Doesn t matter if you have started or are almost finished with the project, we can take it from there. Shine on Vicky Wyalie In Our Thoughts Anita Hyman, who is a member of our guild and also a member of the Rotary Rebels small group, was involved in a serious accident April 26th as she was leaving the Rebels meeting.. Someone "t-boned" her while she was heading home. She sustained significant injuries, including a pelvic fracture, broken ribs and injuries to organs, and a concussion. She has had two surgeries so far and remains in the trauma critical care unit at OU. She is no longer on a respirator today. (Of note is that her birthday was Wednesday 4-27.) Although she can t have visitors until she gets into a regular hospital room, please keep her in your prayers. And for those of us that donate blood, donations can be made at any OBI office and ask them to credit it to Anita Hyman's account. The guild extends its deepest sympathy to Don Lusk, our web master, who recently lost his mother.

9 Volume 9, Issue 5 Page 9 SEW WHAT S NEW Quilting Can be Hazardous to Your Health This is a cautionary tale. At the end of January, someone lent me a Little Twister template. Aha, I thought. Just the right size to use with charm squares. Well, I had seven packs of charm squares and, following the directions accompanying the template, I sewed them all together. So far so good. Well, once they are all sewn together, you have to cut them into squares again by aligning the markings on the template with the seam lines on your fabric. No problem there. EXCEPT I had to cut out 234 of them. No big deal...or so I thought. What happens when you cut out one square after another, when the fabric cannot easily be turned so you are always cutting in the same direction, is that you end up cutting around the template...like Eleanor Burns is seen doing on many of her shows. And what this does is...well, what this does, is it creates a very repetitive motion especially when cutting out 234 squares that can cause problems. So the next day my cutting arm and shoulder were sore. And the next day, and the next. I finally went to the doctor and he injected it. Six weeks later it still hurt, so back to the doctor I went. I was just cutting out pieces for a quilt...what could possibly have gone wrong? Well, what this repetitive motion did for me is it created a tear in my rotator cuff. That s in the shoulder. And that means a nasty seven-letter word: surgery. And about three months of rehabilitation. The surgery will be mid-june so I can attend an art workshop in New Hampshire (and also visit Keepsake Quilting) in one piece. But the reason I write this is that I don t want anyone to suffer the same fate. Take breaks from your cutting or sewing or quilting, or whatever you are doing. Repetitive motion injuries are not uncommon. Limber up every so often to get the kinks out. If you end up with aches and pains, take anti-inflammatories if you can and use ice. Chances are, if you get a repetitive motion injury it will be to the extremity you use the most and, as I am finding out, it is very incapacitating. And trust me: you do not want to find out what that means! y Nancy Forrest
