2 HEAR YE HEAR YE A NOTE FROM ONE OF OUR CO-PRESIDENTS Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and a New Year... the holidays are fast approaching. It's a time to reflect on our many blessings and look forward to spending time with family and good friends. And, our snowbirds are flocking back! Peg is doing a wonderful job getting projects lined up for our all day sews. Ann Vogel will be teaching us "toothpick" applique this Election Day up in the Lucille Ball room. I know I'm looking forward to it. She does such beautiful work! Our brunch with our sisters down south is coming up the end of November in the afternoon. I believe, they will be having a member of the Giving Dolls group come speak. They will, also, be explaining the doll quilt challenge that will be judged later next year with those quilts going to the Giving Dolls project. Sounded like a worthy cause. And, I want to thank Joan and Esther for their hard work on making the upcoming Showcase successful! I'm grateful for them - and you all. STERLING HEIGHTS REC CENTER 2508 St Charles Place Village of Tamarind Come out and sew with us all day from 11:30am to 3:50pm. Lots of fun for everyone. They even have special themes going on some Sunday s. 3rd Sunday is Scrappy Sunday Susan

3 We had a great time with Barbara for her special party. We will miss her but she promised to come back and visit when she is down in The Villages again. Susan has sewn pictures of those who signed this for Barb a while back. Great job Susan, thanks The beginning

4 The surprise continued with people remembering so many things about Barb. Barb Rule-Mispel started off with talking about her black and white quilt. Barb was new and this quilt impressed her. Barbara is also the one who made the album for her with pictures. A good memory for Barb to remember. Esther remarked about how sweet, friendly and sharing she was and still is and how at her young age is still quilting. Barb said she still quilts every day. Delores spoke about Barb s collection of 1930 s fabric which a lot of us didn t know about. Mary Whitmore talked about square dancing, meeting Barb who asked her to join the quilting guild and how Barb got her started with a sampler quilt. Look at her work now. Ida remembered her 3 squares. They were applique, curves and pieces and this is what they started out with. She also remembers having all the fun they had together. The good and the bad. Humm sounds like we need more info on that one Ida, was crown royal involved in any of these fun stories. Rosemary Simone talked about her always willingness to help everyone and all talked about how much she will be missed. I remember the first time she came over to me and I was putting on some binding. She stood over me and in a very nice calm voice noticed and mentioned to me that I was hand stitching my binding on the front. She said that she usually did it the other way. She didn t tell me I had it wrong because that is the person she is, a super nice lady. Barb has touched us and our club in many ways and just want to Thanks for the memories Barb

5 Ann brought in this gorgeous quilt and told us about it. This story tells a lot about friends also. Maggie Walker saw pottery pots, pitchers, etc. in museums and decided to make a quilt reproducing them as accurately as possible. She found fabric that resembled them and made her quilt. My two friends wanted to make the quilt, bought the pattern, and while they were working on their quilts a third person, Jo Ann Davis decided to make one too. The two friends working on their quilts gave Jo Ann some of their fabric to get her started. Then Jo Ann decided she didn't want to make the quilt. My two friends asked me if I would like to have what Jo Ann had started so I took it. Jo Ann was probably not well at this time. I had to redo much of her work. When I finished the quilt and wanted to put it in our quilt show, I contacted Jo Ann and told her I wanted to enter it with both of our names and she said fine. The quilt hangs in my kitchen and I enjoy it immensely Oct 4 th Quilt of the Week Judy Young brought in this quilt that she made for her 13 th great grandson. Another talented person sharing with us her show and tell for October 4 th meeting.

6 Jan bought in this beautiful piano shawl. This was something that she purchased and she wanted to know if anyone knew what kind of material it was made of. It does need some work but it a very striking piece that would look stunning on any piano. ***A piano shawl is a large square or rectangular piece of fabric that is used to decorate the top surface of a grand piano. It serves the practical purpose of protecting the piano from nicks, scratches, and the elements. However, many such shawls are quite elaborate and also serve as decorations. Piano shawls are very often heavily embroidered with bold colors and patterns. The patterns often incorporate flowers or nature scenes. It is also quite common for them to be edged in long fringe. Not only does the fringe look exquisite, but it also helps to drape the shawl evenly over the piano. Piano shawls are generally made of thick silk. This fabric glides naturally onto the surface of a piano and is kept in place by its natural weight as well as the weight of the embroidery. They became quite popular in the Victorian era when having a piano in one's parlor was considered to be at the height of sophistication

7 DID YOU KNOW Our chapter now has more quilts entered for the January showcase than any other one..good job and kudos to those of you who are entering yours. ALEX ANDERSON Alex Anderson s love of quilting all began in 1978 when she completed her Grandmother s Flower Garden Quilt as a part of her work towards her degree in art from San Francisco State University. Over the years her central focus has been to understand fabric relationships and an intense appreciation of traditional quilts and beautiful quilting surface design Alex is the author of 30 books in four languages selling over 1 million copies worldwide.alex is a founding partner of The Quilt Show.com and The Quilt Life magazine (publisher AQS) with Ricky Tims. The Quilt Show is the world s first full-service interactive online video/web TV created just for quilters worldwide. Alex will be here on March 28 th giving 2 shows and it will cost the quilting guild members $10.00 for all three. That is one great deal. More information will be coming. Our November 8 th meeting will be in a different room, the Lucille Ball room since it is Election Day. Make sure you get out and vote either before or after our meeting.
