1 Gourd Class Preview Register for classes on our website starting at 8am(AZ time) Thursday November 17 th, 2016! You now have 2 days to look them over. Registration will not open until 8am (Arizona Time) Thursday November 17th, 2016 unless our server has some issues loading. If that's the case then please keep clicking your refresh button on your computer as it will be up ASAP. (If it is not coming up you might also try opening a new window and retyping Classes fill up fast so be sure to pick out some second choices in case your first choices aren't available. A class is officially yours once you pay for it. Placing a class in your cart does not reserve your space. For the first two weeks, registration will be ONLINE ONLY! The computer keeps up with the class totals and it's the fairest way to keep up with the high volume of signups. After that we can take registrations by phone or online. We have a great lineup of classes this year. Something fun for everyone!

2 Wuertz Farm's 14th Annual Gourd Festival 2017 Class Schedule February 9th-12th, 2017 * Registration fees include all supplies needed unless otherwise noted. * Deadline to sign up for classes is: January 26th, * If a class does not meet the minimum allowance by January 1st, 2017, the class will be cancelled and tuition will be refunded. * Students must cancel on or before January 19th, 2017 in order to receive a tuition refund. No shows at the festival will not receive tuition refunds. * All classes are subject to change. * Gate entrance fee is NOT included in class price. Admission for the Wuertz Farm Gourd Festival is $8.00 per day or you will be able to buy a 3- day pass for $ * Thursday is for classes and vendor set up only! Vendors will not be selling any items until Friday at 9am. * Class registration is online only (as the computer keeps track of the totals)! If you call to register you will be directed to use our website. * Once a class is full, the "add to cart" button will be removed no longer allowing you to add that class to your cart. * To be added to a wait list of a class that is full, add the GC# or name of class to the comment section during check out. 3 Thursday February 9th, 2017 GC-101 Spiral Carving $75 Teacher: Bonnie Gibson (Tucson, AZ) 9:30am-3:30pm Thursday February 9th, 2017 Students Must Bring- Cleaned (Inside and out) 5-8 diameter gourd, Dremel, micromotor or similar power carving tool plus any burs you have on hand, Woodburner with a spear, knife or skew tip and a good quality dust mask. Class Description: This class is a combination of techniques/project class. You should be able to finish your gourd depending on how complicated you choose to make it. You will be provided with a center stone or concho, and will decide on what decorative spirals you want to wrap around it on the gourd. You'll have a choice of a variety of carved and burned patterns to choose from, as well as some different finishing techniques you can choose from. The photos are just examples, everyone will make something unique. Bring a power rotary tool (Dremel, micromotor or similar) and any accessories you have on hand. Bring a woodburner, and bring a gourd that is not huge. Something in the 5-7" diameter range is probably best if you want to finish your piece in class. Bring a good quality dust mask or purchase one at class. Dyes and finishing supplies will be available for class use, but you are welcome to bring your own inks/dyes/brushes, etc. if you prefer to use your own. GC-102 Carved Turtle with Pottery Shards $85 Teacher: Kristy Dial (Minden, NV) 9:30am-3:30pm Thursday February 9th, 2017 Students Must Bring- A clean craft ready gourd approx. 9 tall and approx. 7 across, a good quality dust mask, mini jig saw, wood burner, an awl, power carving tool (Dremel, Master Carver, etc.) and any burrs you may have. I will have burrs available to purchase. If you need a gourd, you may purchase one from Kristy ($15.00). Please contact Kristy at least three (3) weeks prior to class. kristy.dial@yahoo.com Class Description: Carve a classic design and learn how to inlay authentic pottery shards and a cabochon. We will be wood burning, carving and perfecting the art of inlay. The skills you will learn or master in this class can be used on any gourd project. It will be a fun day carving a great piece of art!

4 GC-103 Jumping Cholla Carving $60 Teacher: Debra Williams (Litchfield Park, AZ) 9:30am-12:30pm Thursday February 9th, 2017 Will Students leave with a finished project? No Students Must Bring- Dremel/Rotary tool, 4 burs: yellow saber tooth large ½ cylinder, structured tooth carbide ball bur, filigree bur, app 3/16 to 5/16 diamond wheel bur, good quality dust mask and eye protection. Class Description: During this class you will learn how to carve your gourd to look like the skeleton of the jumping cholla cactus. The instructor will show you how to use your burs to get this effect. Please keep in mind this is a technique class and you may not go home with a finished gourd. Teacher will supply a gourd cleaned inside and out, ink and leather dyes, spray sealer, gloves and stones to inlay. GC-104 Windsical Gourd $145 Teacher: Ron Swank (Nampa, ID) 1:30pm-5:00pm Thursday February 9th, 2017 but will need to varnish the gourd at home. Students Must Bring - Teacher will provide everything but students are encouraged to bring Personal Dust Mask, paints and dyes they prefer to use, any tools they have and use for crafting on gourds. If students travel light, everything will be provided regardless. Class Description: If you ve been waiting for something new; this is it, even for you! If you ve taken a class from me before, don t worry; there s always more. There will be some techniques taught, but mostly importantly it will be musical and fun. You will be working on a precision-laser-cut gourd to create your very own; Wíndsical Gourd. Bring your tools, paints, stains, mask; whatever it is you use on gourds. If you travel light; don t worry, I have everything you ll need. You can leave with a finished gourd, or you may choose to do the finishing touches on your own; your way and that s ok.

5 GC-105 Standing Gourd Mask $93 Teacher: Gloria Crane (Hesperia, CA) 9:30am-3:30pm Thursday February 9th, 2017 Will students leave with a finished Gourd? Yes, Most should finish in class, however if not, all materials and a detailed tutorial will be provided so that they can complete the project at home. Students Must Bring - Wood-burner with pen for burning fine lines, rotary carver with flexible shaft, carving burs, dust mask or respirator, eye protection, heat tool, hot glue gun with glue sticks, scissors. Burs will be available for purchase. Please bring your favorite small paint brushes. Class Description: In this fun class you will begin your morning transferring a mask pattern onto a pre-drilled gourd. You will wood-burn the design, carve and apply color using ink dyes or transparent acrylics. The mask will be adorned with beautiful, colorful feathers and leather embellishments. The mask will be mounted on a prepared wooden dowel stand. A step-by-step written tutorial with color photo illustrations will be provided. Please contact Gloria Crane with questions at gloriousgourdcreations@gmail.com or GC-106 Cattails and Dragonfly $83 Teacher: Olive Moore (Upland, CA) 9:30am-5:00pm Thursday February 9th, 2017 Students Must Bring- Woodburner, spear or skew woodburner pen, pencil, eraser, scissors, heat tool, variety of paint brushes and a dust mask. Class Description: A beautiful textured wing dragonfly sits on one of the cattails. It has a 3-D body and opalescent wings. We will make the cattails come alive with a soft texture. The only power tool you will need is a woodburner. If you re a woodburning beginner you will learn to create clear and even lines. This is a pretty relaxed class Good for beginners.

6 GC-107 Beaded, Braided Beauty $78 Teacher: Gail Kalt (Tucson, AZ) 9:30am-1:30pm Thursday February 9th, 2017, Most should. Students Must Bring- None- All supplies including the gourd are provided for you. Class Description: Make this gorgeous, beaded, braided beauty and bring only yourself and your creative ideas to class. That's right, EVERYTHING will be provided, no tools needed. You will learn the ancient art of Japanese Kumihimo braiding on a loom and how to incorporate beads into the braid. You will also add a beaded fringe to the rim, and apply vibrant alcohol inks as the gourd finish. You get to keep your Kumihimo loom, needles, beads, satin cords, sinew, and finished gourd. This is a new rim treatment I developed this year, great for beginners with no tools and seasoned gourders alike. Come learn, play and create! GC-108 Southwestern Spirit Figures $85 Teacher: Arturo Ramirez (Casa Grande, AZ) 9:30am-3:00pm Thursday February 9th, 2017, body of gourd and one figure will be completed. Students Must Bring- None- All supplies including the gourd are provided for you. Class Description: The Southwest Spirit Figure, a central figure in most indigenous depictions worldwide, journeys back into the literal cave days. Your knowledge of the spirit figure will be greatly enhanced and many deeply interesting theories will be discussed. The weathered base gourd colors and techniques will be discussed in detail. The plethora of design choices will be explained in detail. Paint choices and overcoming color block will be explained. Design layout will be explored and the various ways a gourd can be utilized as a canvas will be demonstrated. Many simple explanations will be provided for seemingly complex artistic conundrums. Join us in sharing nearly 30 years of gourd knowledge, southwest Native American history and painting tips and techniques! (one figure will be completed)

7 GC-109 Beads & Pearls & Wire, Oh My! $58 Teacher: Vickie Echols-Hartman (Azle, TX) 9:30am-12:00pm Thursday February 9th, 2017, most should finish their gourd Students Must Bring- Small needle nose plyers, round nose plyers, small fine tipped wire cutters. Class Description: Here is fun, eclectic way to use those beads you have been collecting. You will learn how to fill in the opening of a gourd with beads and pearls and a wire netting technique to help you design your own unique basket. There will be a generous selection of beads, pearls and wire but, you may bring your own special beads if desired. GC-110 Woven Center Gourd $93 Teacher: Don Weeke (Julian, CA) 9:30am-5:00pm Thursday February 9th, 2017 Students Must Bring- Scissors, ruler or tape measure, Dremel type tool with small drill bits, keyhole or electric saw and glue. Class Description: After marking a centerline with spoke locations, the cleaned 6-8 gourd is cut in half. The two halves are rejoined using wooden dowels and reed. The center portion is then woven using king palm seed frond. The top can also be coiled.

8 GC-111 Pointillism, Pen & Ink $75 Teacher: Robin Bryson (Quail Valley, CA) 9:30am-1:00pm Thursday February 9th, 2017, most will Students Must Bring- None- All supplies including the gourd will be provided for you. Class Description: Pointillism technique of small distinct dots to form an image. Achieve the technique of manipulating your pen to create a stunning wolf. A very relaxing method. Teacher will furnish the gourd, pen, pattern ready to transfer onto the gourd and tutorial. GC-112 Spiral Rim $63 Teacher: Susan Nonn (Elk Mills, MD) 1:00pm-5:00pm Thursday February 9th, 2017 Students Must Bring- Drill with a 5/64 drill bit, hair dryer. Instructor will have one mini-saw to share for the rim cut. Class Description: Looking for a different rim for your gourd bowls? Spend a few hours learning how to weave a spiral rim. Once you learn how to mark your gourd you can spiral from the top to the bottom, or just once around the top. If you want to finish the project in class I suggest a single spiral. The gourd will be colored with alcohol inks. Vinyl masks to add design elements will be available. Instructor will provide a cleaned gourd (outside/inside with an opening large enough for you to easily put your hand into), drill, 5/64 drill bit, flexible rulers, inks and masks, and a mini jigsaw to share.

9 GC-113 Triple Handle Basket $68 Teacher: Vickie Echols-Hartman (Azle, TX) 2:00pm-5:00pm Thursday February 9th, 2017, most should finish their gourd Students Must Bring- Sharp scissors, small needle nose plyers, small fine tipped wire cutters. Class Description: This project is worked with a continuous pine needle coil. You will begin with a prepared gourd and will learn how to secure pine needles to the rim and continue on to make floating coils to create a triple handle. The pine needles are glycerinated so they are extremely flexible and gentler to your hands. Lots of weaving tips will be covered in this class. A detailed tutorial for this will be ed to you after the class. 10 Friday February 10th, 2017 GC-215 Basic Power Carving $58 Teacher: Bonnie Gibson (Tucson, AZ) 9:30am-1:30pm Friday February 10th, 2017 Will Students leave with a finished project? This is a technique class. All will work at their own speed. Students Must Bring- Rotary Tool (Dremel or similar - please avoid battery operated tools), carving burs, dust mask, eye protection (prescription, reading, or safety glasses), Optional, but helpful: riffler files and/or diamond files. Instructor will have some tools for shared class use. Gourd - cut open and cleaned both inside and out (do NOT paint the inside). Gourd should be at least 1/4" thick after cleaning for best results. Any size and shape is fine. Class Description: Get over your fear of power tools while learning the basics of power carving from an award winning instructor with 35+ years of power carving experience in both wood and gourds. This class includes several carving techniques and also covers topics such as carving safety, types of tools and related equipment, and how to choose the right burs for different types of carving. During the class, you'll have the opportunity to try new burs and tools while learning how to carve ripples, basic relief carving, and carving for stone and channel inlays. While you won't go home with a finished product, you'll have plenty of new knowledge and skills that are the basis for success for all your future carving projects. This class is suitable for beginning through advanced students, as experienced carvers will be offered more challenging techniques. GC-216 Filigree Carving $50 Teacher: Bonnie Gibson (Tucson, AZ) 2:00pm-5:00pm Friday February 10th, 2017 Will Students leave with a finished project? No - This is a technique class. All will work at their own speed. Students Must Bring- Rotary Tool (Dremel or similar), carving burs, dust mask, eye protection (prescription, reading, or safety glasses), Xacto type hobby knife with NEW sharp blades. Optional, but helpful: riffler files and/or diamond files. (Instructor will have some for shared class use) Gourd - cut open and cleaned both inside and out. Gourd should be at least 1/4" thick after cleaning for best results. Any size and shape is fine. If desired, the gourd interior may be painted prior to class. If taking the Basic Power Carving class, you may use the same gourd for both classes. Class Description: Learn the fun and impressive "Filigree" technique! You'll learn how to design and carve a section of filigree, and will have the option of adding design elements (patterns provided) such as butterflies, dragonflies, leaves, etc. Because this is a techniques class, everyone will create a gourd that looks different and distinctive! You will try different carving methods and burs and should complete at least one good sized section in class. Take advantage of learning from an experienced master carver; I'll provide you with a wealth of information, tips and tricks that will make the technique much easier, and your finished project will shine!

11 GC-217 Calla Lily Mosaic $83 Teacher: Olive Moore (Upland, CA) 9:30am-5:00pm Friday February 10th, 2017, except for the filigree. Students Must Bring- Power carver, filigree bur, small ball bur, rotary sander with 400 grit sanding discs, woodburner with spear or skew pen, awl or drill with drill bits, pencil, eraser, scissors, heat tool, variety of paint brushes, dust mask. Class Description: Everyone loves mosaics so let s put a mosaic on a gourd. This beautiful calla lily will be a real eye catcher. And yes it can all be done in one day no need to let the tile sit for 24 hours to dry. We ll add filigree on the sides if you would like to and a surprise addition on the back of the gourd. GC-218 Fretted Gold-Leaf Autumn Vase $75 Teacher: Arline Erickson (Camarillo, CA) 9:30am-5:00pm Friday February 10th, 2017 check time? Will Students leave with a finished project? Most students will leave with a finished gourd except that it won't be sprayed with a fixative. Students Must Bring- Wood burner with gourd cutter, spear, or knife pens, heat tool, dust mask, apron, gloves, and something to hold your gourd steady while working on it. Class Description: Using an already prepared gourd, you will wood burn leaf patterns onto your gourd, spray paint the inside, and then wood burn the fret work between the leaves. You ll color the outside with alcohol ink, and then gild your leaves using a variety of imitation gold-leaf colors. If you want to drill a hole, in the bottom, for a tea light, a hole saw and tea lights will be available. Gold-leaf specs will stick to the inside or the gourd and will shine when the light is on. It creates a beautiful effect.

Students Must Bring- Scissors, adjustable heat woodburner and burner pens with tips to include skew or spear and ball or writing and a dust mask. Class Description: Create a pinwheel of feathers around your gourd. You will study the basic characteristics of feathers and use those to draw the design to be burned. Shape stencils will be available for use. You will learn the art of pyro lines and shading during the process. All student experience levels can be successful with this approach.

13 GC-221 Blooming Calla Lilies $85 Teacher: Rosario Wilke (El Cajon, CA) 9:30am-5:00pm Friday February 10th, 2017 Level: Intermediate Will Students leave with a finished project? No, they will finish all the carving and painting of the Calla lilies, and will paint the body of the gourd and finish the cleaning of the filigree at home. Students Must Bring- Micro carver or similar rotary tool, all the burrs you already own, diamond riffler files, sand paper or sanding blocks, small and medium paint brushes, electric sander if you have one or the instructor will have some to share while in class. Heat gun or hair dryer, power strip and your general gourding tool box which will be helpful. Class Description: Join artist instructor Rosario Wilke in this new and exciting class. You will be walked through step by step to some interesting and more advance carving techniques. You will learn the basics in how to create depth between the different elements in the composition. Also you will learn to carve the Calla lilies, the leaves and the movement in each of the elements. Along with this you will learn to identify the shadows and the source of lighting to be more accurate when carving and shading. For the background will execute an advanced detail filigree carving technique, creating a lace-like delicate and airy decorative composition. Finally, you will cut off the opening of this beautiful piece in a wavy manner leaving some of the elements of your design exposed and floating. Finishing the piece will use metallic paints, metallic powders and transparent acrylic paint, to paint and enhance the shadows of this beautiful piece giving even a better depth to the whole composition. Also a couple of tips in how to apply and enhance the metallic powders without running the paint on the raw surface. 14 GC-223 Cacti Skeleton Vase $85 Teacher: Sue Brogdon (Tucson, AZ) 9:30am-5:00pm Friday February 10th, 2017 Students Must Bring- Plastic or latex gloves, small diamond files, tacky glue and a bucket. Class Description: This asymmetrical vase features three leaf cutouts that are enhanced with the inner tissue from the prickly pear cactus and outlined with pygmy date palm. Students will first color the gourd with dye ink, seal it, and then step outdoors to file the edges of the leaf blades. The cacti skeletons will be adhered to the inside of the gourd and then the edge of the cutouts will be couched with dyed or natural pygmy date palm. The last step will entail lashing a thick row of fiber to the rim edge. During the workshop, instructor will demonstrate how to prepare prickly pear pads for use in art projects and show how to line a gourd with handmade paper. Instructor will provide a cleaned and prepped vase-shaped gourd; dye inks, sealant, bleached cacti skeleton, black and natural pygmy date palm, artificial sinew, and a needle. GC-224 Bear Paws- Design-in-a-nutshell $75 Teacher: Brenda Blackwelder (Albuquerque, NM) 9:30am-1:00pm Friday February 10th, 2017 Will Students leave with a finished project? Students will have the design completely drawn on, hopefully blacked in, possibly painted. Students Must Bring- Paints - if you want colors other than those shown on the pictured gourd, various paint brushes (Instructor will have some). Class Description: Where do I start when putting a design on my Gourd? This Class will answer that question and teach you to draw a design from scratch using a pencil and ruler. It will give you the basics to put any design on your gourd and have it come out even. We will be drawing the design shown and you will leave with the design drawn and inked in. And hopefully painted depending on how steady you work. You will be given a kit with everything you need to create your design.

15 GC-225 Gourd Birdhouse Cottage $85 Teacher: Marla Garber (Frankston, TX) 9:30am-5:00pm Friday February 10th, 2017 Students Must Bring- An apron to protect clothing and a smile. (Apron is not required but recommended) Class Description: What bird wouldn t want a beautiful home to live in? In the class we will paint a cottage for our feathered friends. We will talk about hole sizes for birds, applying sealer to the gourd and care of the finished birdhouse for years to come. The Toad Stool Inn is fun, colorful and whimsical. The limit is only your imagination, so let s paint! GC-226 The Legendary Blue Lizard $85 Teacher: Arturo Ramirez (Casa Grande, AZ) 9:30am-3:00pm Friday February 10th, 2017 Students Must Bring- None- All supplies including the gourd are provided for you. Class Description: The Blue Lizard is the key to survival for the Soboba people. Sliding down on a sunbeam, the Blue Lizard cured the sick children and saved the people. This and other fascinating Native American oral teachings will be discussed. On this journey you will create your personal Blue Lizard as you learn fascinating information regarding the people who have inhabited the southwest for the last 12,000 years. From the Mimbres to the Pima, to the Hopi and the Zuni, to the Ancient Pueblo Dwellers and the Hohokam. Your southwest artistic journey will include how to create many other Native American symbols, figures and animals. I will be sharing extensive gourd knowledge from nearly 30 years of creating gourd art. You will complete a one of a kind Blue Lizard gourd, discussing design layout and gourd choices and the all-important color selection. The paint technique utilized for the ancient look. Overcoming color block and how to fix mistakes. I will share in detail what supplies and paints that I use exclusively. For this class be prepared for a journey to the next level of gourd knowledge learning of the ancient desert southwest people.

16 GC-227 Couching on a Gourd $93 Teacher: Don Weeke (Julian, CA) 9:30am-5:00pm Friday February 10th, 2017, if students design is fairly simple. Students Must Bring- Dremel type tool and small drill bits, scissors, woodburning tool, Darner needles, needle nose plyers and a ruler. Class Description: Learn the intricacies of couching- The sewing of a material onto the surface of a gourd. Students will color and then couch date palm seed frond onto an 8-10 cleaned gourd and finish by coiling a top. In addition to the actual couching technique, students will learn to cover exposed ends, hide a knot under the couched material, add material and form a continuous loop. GC-228 Feline Frenzy $75 Teacher: Brenda Blackwelder (Albuquerque, NM) 1:30pm-5:00pm Friday February 10th, 2017 Will Students leave with a finished project? Students will have the cat put together with base paint and features on. Totally finished depends upon how much detail you put into your cat. Students Must Bring- Paints - if you have a particular cat and color in mind you will need the those colors in an acrylic paint or paints. I will provide the colors listed in the description. Fine Line paint brushes - I have some available but is you want to use yours that is fine. Class Description: We are being invaded by Cats and when we get done we will have a whole Clutter. They come in every shape and color. From orange, black, white, yellow gray, brown, peach, rust and tan to any combination of the above. A Kit will be provided with everything you need. You will be delighted with them from the tip of their tails to the tip of their little pink noses!

No- Students will finish all the carving, painting the patina and background of the leaves. The body of the gourd will be finished at home. Students Must Bring- A good quality dust musk, micro carver or similar rotary tool, all the burrs you already own, diamond riffler files, sand paper or sanding blocks, small and medium paint brushes, electric sander if you have one or the instructor will have some to share while in class. Heat gun or hair dryer, power strip and your general gourding tool box which will be helpful. Class Description: Students will learn to design and carve a three-dimensional lid, they will carve leaves dropping down from the top as the focus of the design, along with cutting a good-fitting lid for their gourd. They will also learn how to glaze the recessed areas using acrylic paints, and enhancing the leaves with copper patina. As a final touch they will add a wooden ball as a handle for the lid which also will be enhanced with copper patina. This Class will answer that question and teach you to draw a design from scratch using a pencil and ruler. It will give you the basics to put any design on your gourd and have it come out even. We will be drawing the design shown and you will leave with the design drawn and inked in. And hopefully painted depending on how steady you work. You will be given a kit with everything you need to create your design.

Class Description: Students will learn basic open coiling, techniques for hiding the drilled holes, and keeping their stitches straight. The coiling material is Danish cord that will be accented with Design Master Color sprays. The bowl will be dyed a chocolate brown and sealed. The interior will be left natural for students to paint their preferred color after class. This is a technique class, the project may not be finished during class time.

Class Description: Painting Petroglyphs is a new gourd class focusing on the petroglyphs created by the ancient people that called the southwest home, many many years ago. Petroglyphs represent a worldwide permanent display of designs, ideas, concepts and also depictions that defy clear identification. Petroglyphs from Arizona, New Mexico and other parts of the world will be discussed. You will complete a one of a kind gourd while learning about the ancient people of Arizona and New Mexico. The use of color within designs will be detailed. Gourd selection, cleaning and painting will be detailed. Colors, brushes, supplies and gourd tips will be explained. With close to 30 years of creating gourd art, the information return, will refresh and recharge your existing artistic talents! GC-340 Flat Kumihimo Gourd Necklace $68 Teacher: Barbara Bellchambers (Canada) 9:30am-1:30pm Saturday February 11th, 2017 Will students leave with a finished project? Yes Students must bring: A pair of scissors and patience! Instructor will supply all materials needed. Class Description: Have you spent endless hours shopping looking for just the right cord for your gourd necklaces? Look no longer as you can make it yourself. All you need is a Kumihimo disc, and some cord. We will be using rattail, but at home you can use any type of cord you have wool, ribbon, hemp, embroidery floss, the list is endless. You will choose 4 colors to make your own Kumihimo flat braid, attach the fittings, and paint a unique design on a gourd shard to complete your necklace. Do not worry that you will forget all the steps, as I will send you home with a tutorial with each step described. I will also give you directions for a variation of the instructions that will let you make a wider cord for trimming ocean drums.

Everything except the beads to conceal the drill holes Students Must Bring- Plastic or latex gloves, denatured alcohol, painter s tape, magic marker, small wire cutter, a flat-nosed pliers for jewelry making (this tool is very important!) and a bucket Class Description: Alcohol inks, when mixed, blended or washed together create a plethora of vibrant colors. Instructor will demonstrate multiple ways to utilize these bold colors dripping, outlining, stamping, painting, blending, and used in combination with other products. Students will then select the technique and the colors to create their own gourd. Students will learn how to wire wrap an agate, which will then be attached to a pygmy date palm rim treatment. Beads will be utilized to conceal the drill holes. GC-342 Feline Frenzy $75 Teacher: Brenda Blackwelder (Albuquerque, NM) 1:30pm-5:00pm Saturday February 11th, 2017 Will Students leave with a finished project? Students will have the cat put together with base paint and features on. Totally finished depends upon how much detail you put into your cat. Students Must Bring- Paints - if you have a particular cat and color in mind you will need the those colors in an acrylic paint or paints. I will provide the colors listed in the description. Fine Line paint brushes - I have some available but if you want to use yours that is fine. Class Description: We are being invaded by Cats and when we get done we will have a whole Clutter. They come in every shape and color. From orange, black, white, yellow gray, brown, peach, rust and tan to any combination of the above. A Kit will be provided with everything you need. Dremel or similar tool, optional: Woodburner. Gloves, good quality dust mask, paintbrush. Optional: Heat gun Class Description: This combo class will show you how to securely attach handles that are functional as well as decorative. (You may also use the same technique to add an extra gourd neck and give your gourd an interesting pottery shape.) Next, the gourd will be textured with a variety of materials, and coated with a real metal patina finish. Students should bring a gourd cleaned inside and out. Any shape is fine, but avoid gourds that are really large. One that is 6-8" or less in diameter is preferred. Bring a good quality dust mask, a dremel tool and burs, and a ½ - 1" paintbrush. If you own a heat gun, please bring it. Other materials will be supplied in class. GC-444 Trio of Mask $85 Teacher: Kristy Dial (Minden, NV) 10:30am-3:00pm Sunday February 12th, 2017 Students Must Bring- A good quality dust mask, mini jig saw, wood burner and an awl. Students Must Bring- Dremel/Rotary tool, 3 burs: yellow saber tooth large ½ cylinder, filigree burs, 3/16 to 5/16 diamond wheel undercutting bur, a good quality dust mask, eye protection and a pencil. Class Description: In this class you will recreate three of the life stages of the prickly pear cactus. The skeleton (also known as cactus lace) will be your background. Going around the top rim we will show how the paddle starts losing its skin and the lace appears. In the foreground we will have the healthy cactus. The teacher will show you how to use your burs to create this effect. This is a technique class and you may not leave with a completed gourd. The teacher will provide a gourd cleaned inside and out, ink and leather dyes, gloves, paint, watercolor pencils, spray sealer and wipes. The premise of this class is learning all there is to know about making a thunder gourd, but also using other basic techniques that I ve learned along the way for crafting, staining and finishing processes that can be applied to other projects. This class is excellent for beginners, but also for any gourd enthusiast wanting to do something new. You will be working on a unique 3-dimensional original laser-cut gourd.

This is a mixed media class and students will work with different elements to create this beautiful sassy cat. They will work on the engineering of the sculpture as well as the embellishing, they will learn different techniques such as texturizing the body and create a faux raku technique adding the sparkle, color and interest to this sassy cat. The face will be created by sculpting the nose and the ears adding the shiny copper wires for the mustache that he or she deserves. Will learn the different ways of weighting and balancing the sculpture. Last but not least will set this sassy cat on its own stand and enjoy it! Instructor will have one mini-saw to share for the rim cut. Class Description: Looking for a different rim for your gourd bowls? Spend a few hours learning how to weave a spiral rim. Once you learn how to mark your gourd you can spiral from the top to the bottom, or just once around the top. If you want to finish the project in class I suggest a single spiral. The gourd will be colored with alcohol inks. Vinyl masks to add design elements will be available. Instructor will provide a cleaned gourd (outside/inside with an opening large enough for you to easily put your hand into), drill, 5/64 drill bit, flexible rulers, inks and masks, and a mini jigsaw to share. Class Description: In ancient times, few animals were revered worldwide as was the turtle. Cultures have cherished the turtle for millennia for wisdom, longevity, determination, self-reliance, and many more positive traits. Many North American Native people refer to our earth as Turtle Island. In this class you will create your own turtle island gourd. As you paint your gourd, close to 30 years of gourd knowledge, and experience will be shared with many revelations and simple but brilliant ideas for gourd creation. Astonishing color selections and possibilities will be displayed. Various gourd shapes and artistic creations will be discussed. Paints, brushes and finishes will be clearly detailed. Animals, as depicted on pottery, petroglyphs, pictographs and basketry will be discussed, as they pertain to the ancient southwest people.
