3 PREPARING THE SCROLL Primed canvas is the surface upon which all elements of the scroll will be placed. Primed canvas is available at artist supply stores on large rolls and can be purchased in any length desired. It is easy to use since it already has been coated with gesso and does not require any extra preparation. It may cost a little more, but the ease of using it right away is worth the small additional cost. MATERIALS: *12 wide primed canvas *Paintbrushes - various sizes *Gel medium *Acrylic paints *Crackle medium (optional *Sea sponge *Dowels *Feathers *Decorative end caps for dowels *Cording *Scissors *Eyelets *Strong glue - liquid nails, hot glue, etc. *Container for water *Permanent ink for rubber stamps *Magic markers suitable for wood DIRECTIONS: 1. Determine the length and width of the completed scroll and cut out the dimensions from a piece of primed canvas. For our example, we used a 6 X 24 sheet of primed canvas. 2. Use a damp sponge to cover the surface of the canvas with a combination of acrylic paints. We selected shades of yellow, orange, red and gold metallic paints. 3

4 3. If desired, paint sections of the canvas with crackle medium. Based on the instructions that were provided with the crackle medium, paint or sponge the crackle surface with cream acrylic paint. Let dry. Seal the surface with an all purpose sealer. 4. Accent parts of the canvas to create an antiqued look to the surface. 5. Cut a dowel that is 2 inches longer than width of the canvas. For example, if the canvas is 12 wide, use a dowel that is 14 long. 6. Select two decorative end pieces for the dowel ends. These can be curtain ends or wood pieces glued together. Glue these to each end of the dowel. 7. Embellish the dowel as desired. For our example we used gold metallic paint, accented with blue white and orange. 8. Determine how you want your scroll to unroll. If you plan to have the story unfold so it is read from left to right, the dowel is placed on the right hand side. If you plan to have the story unfold from right to left, the dowel should be placed on the left hand side. In most western countries, books are read from left to right and horizontally. In the east and orient they are read from right to left and vertically. 4

5 9. On the opposite end from where you plan to present your story on the canvas, fold over the edge twice. Glue this section down and let dry. Add eyelets as desired along this edge. 10. Cut the number of cords that equals the number of eyelets made along the side of the canvas. These cords should be sufficient to wrap around the rolled scroll. We suggest at least 18 inches, or the length of the canvas. 11. The canvas is now ready to be embellished. 5

6 GENERAL LAYOUT The general layout of the scroll is simple, but requires some thought as to what and where certain elements will be placed on the scroll. The scroll is designed to tell both a visual and informative story. As the viewer unrolls the scroll, it should capture their attention and draw them into the scroll even more. It is a treasure that enlightens as it is viewed. With this in mind, consider the following when designing your scroll: 1. Determine the theme of the scroll. Is it historical, fantasy based, scientific, etc. 2. Gather all material that pertains to the theme. Pictures and words should complement the theme. Select the primary elements for the scroll. These include both people, animals and scenery. Draw, color and cut out each of these elements. 3. Determine what elements will be presented first, second, third, etc. On pages 8-11 we have provided numerous suggestions for information that could be included on each section of a scroll. 4. Pick the colors you want to use. Keep the colors consistent from section to section. Vary the shades and patterns to create variety. 6
