Clare Cherry Paper Cutting - Using Scissors Always cut away from your body. Practice these cutting activities with young student. The exercises help develop dexterity and muscular control. * Cut along a coiled line on a very thin paper plate. * Provide a collection of old greeting cards that students can cut in any way they want. * Cut along lines or around pictures that students have drawn themselves. This provides more incentive than adult drawings. *Students enjoy cutting clay into pieces, so try scissors at the clay table. What To Do With Torn or Cut Paper Cut construction paper can be used in collages and mobiles. Have a stapler and tapes of various types available. For mobiles, paste two or three of the shapes together, punch a hole near the top and hang by string from a line stretched across the room. Or they can be hung by string from coat hangers. SPIRAL CUT Cut a circle..begin cutting inside a circle..moving closer and closer... to the center of the circle.

2 FOLDING & CURLING PAPER instruction page Paper folding can include everything from complicated origami animals to newspaper hats. Encourage students to make their own creations with the aid of tape and staples, party baskets, hats, doll furniture, and so on. Origami is useful for learning to follow directions but does not contribute to creativity as a rule. *Warning: Do not expect more than the student can do. Use various widths and lengths of paper strips to fold, curl, twist and then glue together to create paper sculpture. 3 FOLDING & CUTTING a RECTANGLE fold Step 1 After you cut a perfect square, you can use it to cut 2 perfect rectangles. Step 2 - Fold the square in half. Step 3 Open it up and cut along the lin cutting You now have 2 perfect 4 1/2" x 9" rectangles. To cut even smaller squares, old one of the rectangles in hal Open it up and cut along the lin cutting line fold You can keep this going on and on. You now have 2 perfect 4" x 4" squares.

4 FOLDING & CUTTING a TRIANGLE fold Step 1 - Use an 9 x12 sheet o Step 2 construction paper. Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise (hot dog style). This is a rectangle shape. Step 3 Step 4 Cut the folded rectangle Open up the cut rectangle diagonally (bottom corner to find a folded triangle to opposite top corner) and two irregular shaped triangles.

5 FAN FOLD Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Cut a triangle.. Using a ruler placed along the bottom edge, start by folding the top point down towards you over the ruler. Now, turn the triangle over. Pull out the ruler and again place it along the bottom edge which will be a folded edge. Repeat folding the top point down towards you over the ruler. The fold will start resembling an accordion.

6 SPRING FOLD Step 1 - Begin with 2 strips 1/2" wide and 10" long. Step 2 - With ends touching, attach with glue or tape. Step 3 - Take turns folding one strip over the other blue on red..red over blue.blue over red, and continue until you reach the end. Step 4 - Attach the end with glue or tape.

7 CURLING PAPER Step 1 - Cut a strip of paper Step 2 - tart rolling the paper Step 3 - Continue rolling as wide as you like around something round to the end of the strip. and as long as you like such as a pencil. 8 I don't recommend glue sticks for anything except tissue paper because I have never found them to be successful in attaching for any length of tim Hot & Cool Glue Guns Transparent Tape & Masking Tape & Duct Tape Staples & Stapler Be sure that there is an adult instructing the proper use of staplers. Collage Dough Made with half flour, half salt, water to mix. PASTING & GLUING reference sheet Squeeze a line of glue onto the paper. A little saying to get going is "Dot, Dot, Not A Lot". Smooth with the tip of the glue bottle. Whey you are finished using the glue, clean the top of the bottle with a paper towel and close the top. White Liquid Glue Use it full strength for heavy objects such as buttons and pipe cleaners. Can be thinned with water and brushed on for thin objects such as paper and glitter. Glue Sticks Be sure that there is an adult assisting with the use of glue guns. This can be spread thickly in the top of an egg carton or styrofoam tray, to hold heavier objects such as shells and pebbles. This same dough can be spread thinner and used to make collage pieces adhere to paper and other surfaces. Plaster Of Paris or Wall Spackling Put mixed plaster or premixed spackling into a shallow plastic container or box lid and quickly arrange pine cones, twigs, nuts, and the like on the surface. Liquid tempera paints can be added when mixing the plaster or spackling. The plaster will set up in about 15 minutes. The spackling takes minutes. NEVER put leftover plaster or spackling down the sink drain, as it will clog the pipe Tip for Gluing Paper Air Tight When gluing paper you just need a small bead of glue around the very edge. Use your index finger to smear the glue to the very edge creating a solid smear of glue all the way around the paper. By doing this you will get a air tight seal that won't dry out and cause the paper to eventually fall o Don't put any glue in the middle of the paper.
