INTRODUCTION The purpose of this Enrichment4You e-guide is to provide theme ideas for creating 3-D designs using the color illustrations and the black and white line drawings offered in this guide. Suggestions will include use of collage materials and color combinations that can be used to create your own special effects. TABLE OF CONTENTS Creating a Layered Diorama Picture - Pages 1-2. Making Mini-Collages from Color Illustrations - Page 3. Making Textured Transfers - Page 4. Collage Materials - Pages 5-6. Mini Details for Dimensional Paint - Page 7. Black and White and Color Graphics - Pages History (Egypt), Art Dioramas
CREATING A LAYERED DIORAMA A layered diorama is one of the easiest type of dioramas to create. It is composed of multiple layers of collage materials that give the view a 3-D effect when viewed. MATERIALS: *Copies of Egyptian designs and motifs *Dimensional paint *Decorative paper *Scissors X-Acto knife - Adult Supervision Required *Dimensional material - (Dimensional material can be foam core pieces, glue dots, silicone glue, pieces of cardboard etc.) *Collage materials - buttons, beads etc. DIRECTIONS: 1. Select a background color or decorative paper of choice. 3 Embellish this paper as desired with dimensional paints, rubber stamps etc. Try and select a paper that complements the overall theme of the diorama. 1 *In our example we selected a heavy weight deep purple paper with another sheet of lighter purple paper that had a rich handmade appearance. The border was made using turquoise and gold dimensional paint History (Egypt), Art 1 Dioramas 2 3 *A crackled heavy weight paper was placed in the center of the lighter purple paper. On the back were two layers of foam core pieces glued together. As the dimensional material *A sheet of rice paper was torn to create uneven edges and pasted on a diagonal. 4 *Next, 3 metallic buttons were glued into the lower right hand side. Red and green dimensional paint was squiggled over the buttons and sections of the background paper.
CREATING A LAYERED DIORAMA 2. Select the primary elements for the diorama. These include both people, animals and scenery. Draw, color and cut out each of these elements. *In our example our primary element is the mask of King Tutankamun. *The secondary elements are the scarab beetle and a column. 3. Place some type of dimensional material (see description under materials) on the back of each element you want to add to your backdrop. Each layer that protrudes from the backdrop will require greater depth of distance. This can be done by adding additional dimensional material. Pieces of foam core glued together History (Egypt), Art 2 Dioramas Glue Dots *Different elements, not all proportional, can be layered on top of the base of decorative paper. Each element should convey an Egyptian feel.
MAKING MINI-COLLAGES FROM COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS MATERIALS: There are many ways you can embellish the color illustrations provided in this e- guide. The following basic directions should be utilized to create long-lasting and durable mini-collages. Dimensional paint Tacky glue Foam core or cardboard Scissors Decorative papers X-Acto knife - Adult Supervision Required 1. Using a flat piece of cardboard as a squeegee, spread a thin layer of glue over a decorative piece of paper and place it onto a piece of posterboard or foam core board. Embellish the paper with metallic paints, sponged on color or other collage papers. Let dry and cut out a desired shape. 2. Select one or more designs you wish to incorporate on the paper you just decorated. Enlarge or reduce the images if necessary. Decorate as desired. Cut out each design. 3. Determine the type of dimensional material you want to use to elevate the design from the background paper. Add as many of the pieces as desired to create the design you want. Assemble all elements of the mini-collages and place where desired on the larger 3-D diorama. History (Egypt), Art 3 Dioramas
MAKING TEXTURED TRANSFERS This is an easy technique that offers wonderful texture to a surface. MATERIALS *White or clear caulk *Copies of illustrations *Water *Sponge DIRECTIONS: 1. Spread a small amount of caulk onto the front of your selected image. 2. While the caulk is still wet, place the image face down onto the selected surface. 3. Let the caulk completely dry. History (Egypt), Art 4 Dioramas 4. Dampen the paper with a sponge and gently rub away the paper until only the image remains on the surface.
