1 WELCOME TO THE CAR-NIVAL PACK! in association with JOIN OUR CAR-NIVAL TRIBES AND BE PART OF CARFEST S BIGGEST AND BOLDEST CAR-NIVAL YET!

2 The CarFest Car-nival Parade returns and it s bigger and better than ever before! Filled with dancers, drummers, marching bands and street entertainers; it is a huge celebration of all things CarFest. We would like to invite you and your family to pick your Car-nival Tribe and create your own masks and costumes to become part of that tribe. Are you a unicorn or a robot? you decide! Each tribe will parade alongside our Giant Puppets and help make this years Car-nival extra special.. The Car-nival Parade will take place on the Sunday of the festival and you will have the opportunity to strut your stuff alongside our professional performers and community groups. IN THIS PACK YOU WILL FIND 1. A resource list to collect the items you need to create your fabulous masks (We recommend Hobby Craft 2. Templates to print, cut out and decorate (or why not make your own design?) 3. Basic instructions of how to create the various masks. 4. Examples of our finished masks. All you need to do is get your family around the table, dive into your craft cupboard, follow the instructions and get creative. Bring your masks along to CarFest and join our Car-nival Parade!

3 Resource list To create your CarFest Car-nival masks you will need; Materials A3 card you will need to print or photocopy your mask templates onto this. Elastic [We recommend 1/2inch but any will do. Or use ribbons but then add a piece to each side]. Anything you like to decorate your masks and make them unique to you. Poster Paint, sticky tape and general craft supplies. Basic tools Scissors Craft knife and cutting board Stapler Sponges to add paint. [you can use brushes but they sometimes add too much] Do you and your family want to take your Car-nival designs to the next level? Well you can! We re looking for the best ideas of how you, and your family would decorate your chosen set of wheels. From painting a rainbow on your dad s car, to adding wings to your mum s bicycle or turning your brother s skateboard into a spaceship. The madder the idea the better! The top 10 ideas will be selected, and the chosen families will be invited to bring their decorated wheels to CarFest. Families will be granted early access to the festival site, plus a special party on the Sunday to celebrate your efforts. All decorated wheels and their families will feature in the Car-nival it s truly a wonderful experience. Visit carfest.org/car-nival for more information.

4 The Masks We have created a series of mask templates that link with our Giant Car-nival puppets featuring in the CarFest Car-nival. Choose a mask that suites you and your family best and get creative! Note: Each tribe will be in a different area of the parade. EASY We have rated these on a scale of 1-10; 1 being easy and 10 being the hardest. We encourage you to release you inner character and wear the colours of your tribe too. Each tribe will be distinctive in their colours and personality. Don t forget to bring your mask to CarFest! 9 Tribe two: Bat headdress Example decoration Method: Cut out template (on following page). Note that eyes, mouth and ear cut outs are best done with a craft knife on a cutting board. Adults only! Decorate: This example has been cut from black card and covered in glitter glue that comes in little bottles.

11 Tribe two: Devil mask Example decoration Method: Cut out the template. Where you see a dotted Line (on the nose in this case) score along it and fold. Use a craft knife to cut out the eyes, teeth and nose (Be careful not to cut along the dotted line). Decorate: We used poster paint and sponges. To apply paint in layers start with the paler colours first if you want to mix/merge colours. Staple elastic to secure it to your head. We suggest you try and attach it level with the eyes. These masks are long so the mouth will be level with your neck.

13 Tribe three: Pegasus/Unicorn headdress part one Example decoration Method: Cut out the templates, two if its Pegasus, three if it s the Unicorn. Where you see dotted lines, score and fold. There s lots on these! Use a craft knife to cut out round the eyes, ears and nostrils and the hair on the mane. (Be careful not to cut the dotted lines) The mane has an instruction written on it at the top. Glue Me the area is shaded. Use a glue stick and cover the shaded area in glue then stick or staple it to the back of the head. Decorate: We painted our mask silver with a sponge then added some purple as a highlight. It doesn t need much because the shape is very recognisable. Remember less is more when painting thin card.

18 Tribe four: Phoenix Headdress Example decoration Method: Cut out template (on following page). Use a craft knife to cut out the eyes Leave the pupils to give detail. If cutting them out is a bit tricky you can just colour them in. (note The eyes are on top of your head when you wear it so they are only for decoration). You ll notice that we have also given our mask a slight squeeze to the head and beak to give some additional shape. Decorate: We painted our mask with poster paint using three colours for the fire: yellow/ orange/ red. Laying on the yellow first with the sponge. Gold for the head and beak. Staple a small piece of elastic at the sides to secure it onto your head.

We used a craft knife to cut out around the beak or you can use sharp scissors. Leave the eyes they re already in place for you. Decorate: We recommend using a sponge to paint your mask. (Note try to Roll it on don t dab it on. And less is more!) Staple your elastic at the back to hold it to your head.

Decorate: We painted our robot silver with a sponge and then added black highlights and shading to emphasise its shape. Apply it almost dry. Staple elastic at the sides.
