1 ELEPHANT LANTERN 1 hour all ages Milk bottle Tissue paper Pens Strong glue PVA glue 1. Wash out a used milk bottle 2. Cut around the top of the milk bottle where the handle meets the bottle at the base of the handle. 3. Use different coloured tissue to add colour to the elephant with PVA glue. 4. Out of the remaining milk bottle cut out two elephant ear shapes. Glue these to the milk bottle using strong glue; you may need to ask an adult to help you. ADD COLOUR TO THE ELEPHANT WITH TISSUE PAPER 5. Add two little eyes to your elephant to make a cute face. 6. 2 RECYCLED POLAR BEAR LANTERN 1 hour all ages Milk bottle Tissue paper Pens PVA glue Scissors 1. Rinse out and cut off the bottom of a milk carton. 2. Tear some tissue paper into small pieces and stick it to your milk carton using PVA glue. Research images of the Arctic sky and northern lights for inspiration. 3. Print off this picture of a polar bear and stick it in its snowy habitat. Make sure the polar bear has everything it needs to survive; sea ice to hunt, seals and fish to eat and a den for its cubs. 4. Why not research which other animals live in the arctic and draw them on your lantern? 5. Decorate with stars and patterns. 6. Place an LED light in the lantern and light it on Earth Hour to celebrate our amazing planet. DECORATE WITH STARS AND PATTERNS youth@wwf.org.uk or by using

3 WILLOW LANTERN Willow Masking tape Wet strength tissue paper PVA glue Paint brush Garden secateurs 1. Cut the willow into 4 equal size pieces. 2. Use the masking tape to fix two of the pieces into a v shape and repeat. 3. Now cut 4 more equal sizes of willow that are smaller than the last. Make a square out of these willow pieces using masking tape to fix the corners. 4. Attach the end of the willow triangles to the corners of the willow square and fix at the top with masking tape. Add enough tape to make sure your structure is strong enough. 5. Add some pieces of willow halfway up the pyramid to strengthen the structure. 6. You can add a handle to your lantern so that you can carry it. Make a cardboard or paper loop and thread it through the top point of the lantern. 1 hour all ages ADD 7. Cover your lantern in wet strength tissue paper and PVA glue and wait for it to dry. 8. Add drawings or patterns to your lantern. You could cut out a silhouette of your favourite animal and add it to the lantern or add collect fallen leaves outside and stick them on. These shapes will look beautiful when the light shines through. 9. Hang an LED torch inside your lantern and light on the night of Earth Hour to be a part of a global celebration of our beautiful planet. 4 OWL PLASTIC BOTTLE LANTERN Scissors or scalpel for tricky bits under adult supervision Brown acrylic paint Decorative pens in gold, silver and while LED tealight. Marker pen 1. Cut the top off the bottle so ¾ of the bottle remains 2. Using a marker pen, draw an image of an owl include wings, eyes, breast feathers and brow feathers. You can use our drawing to help you! TOP TIP Why not re-use you owl as a pen pot after Earth Hour, until next year of course! 20 minutes all ages 3. Cut out some of these shapes to have points where the light can shine through. For example the eyes, breast feathers and beak. 4. Paint with either white or brown acrylic paint or poster paints mixed with PVA Glue to help the paint stick to the plastic surface. Leave to dry. 5. Decorate with décor pens which work well on plastic. 6. Place an LED tealigh inside and light up on the 25th March to celebrate Earth Hour. not just about one hour on Saturday 24th March amazing activities to help you plan your best Earth Hour yet. 6 RECYCLED EARTH HOUR LANTERNS Recycling! Tin cans, milk bottles, soft drink pottles, orange juice cartons or even paper bags! Pens Glue Tissue paper Decorative items LED lights TOP TIP You can use almost anything to nake a recycled lantern to celebrate Earth Hour. If your recycled item is opaque, make sure there are holes for light to shine through. Tin can lantern 1. Using sharp scissors, carefully remove the top of the can. You will need to ask an adult to help you because the edges will be very sharp. 2. Using a craft punch, punch stars, circles and hearts out of the can so that the light shines through. 3. You could display your can like this or you could decorate with pens. 20 minutes all ages Plastic bottle lantern 1. Cut the top off the plastic bottle using scissors. 2. Use glue to stick transparent tissue on the outside of the bottle. You could use your favourite colour or a combination of colours. 3. Why not decorate your bottle with leaves that have already fallen from the tree or other items from nature. Alternatively cut out pictures of your favourite animal and stick these to the lantern. 4.
