1 Enrichment Captive animals deserve an environment which is rich in social opportunity, mental stimulation and physical challenges. By providing our animals with daily enrichments we are able to enhance their captive life styles. Enrichment can be described as any effort to change the nature of work by making it more interesting or challenging to the worker. Environmental enrichment is defined by some as the provision of stimuli which promote the expression of species-appropriate behavioral and mental activities in an under-stimulating environment. By definition, enrichment is an animal principle, it is the simple act of making something more meaningful. The term enrichment could be applied to anything that seeks to enhance the quality of captive animal care by identifying and providing the environmental stimuli necessary for optimal psychological and physiological well-being. Make sure all cardboard boxes do not have any tape, labels, stickers, glue, staples or metallic lining on them. If any have this, make sure to remove all remains of above items. 2. Box flaps can either be glued closed with approved glue or you can fold flaps in and tuck under. This can either be done for both sides to completely seal the box, or just on one side and the other side can be left open. By leaving one side open, keepers can add treats for the chimps and then they will seal it up. 3. Once the box is closed up and stripped of any unsafe materials, it s time to wrap your present. You can be creative and use any approved paper. No tape can be used to attach the paper to the box, however nontoxic glue sticks work great for this. If you chose to leave one side of your box open, simply cover all of the open flaps with paper. This way after keepers add a treat or present for the chimps, they can close the box up before giving to the animal.

You now have a personalized ornament that will be given to the Chimps at Lion Country Safari for Christmas with the Chimps! These are also great to decorate Christmas trees on the chimp islands.

6 Piñatas for the Chimps You can create any shape or animal you can think of! Lots of newspaper- no shiny inserts Nontoxic washable paint, nontoxic washable markers Flour, Water, Large Bowl Scissors Form to create your shape around. Can be a balloon, a box. This item will be removed before piñata is given to the animals. It s only to help form the shape of it. 1. Cut the newspaper into strips. 2. Make the paste: You can make paste with flour and water. Stir three parts water into one part flour until the mixture is smooth and creamy. 3. Stir well and the paste is ready to use. 4. Dip each piece of paper in the liquid mixture and apply it one piece at a time to form your shapes. 5. Make sure to leave an opening to remove the balloon after it s dry. 6. This may be a project that needs to be worked on over several days. Allow the layers to dry before adding more. 7. Once completely dry, remove the item such as the balloon that was used. You will have to pop it and then take it out. Make sure all pieces of the balloon are removed. 8. Don t seal the whole up. The keepers can use this to stuff your piñata full of tasty treats. 9. Now have fun decorating it! Use any approved materials to draw or paint pictures and designs onto your piñata. 10. You can use cardboard tubes to create legs and boxes to create bodies of different animals. 11. You now have a piñata that will be given to the Chimps at Lion Country Safari for Christmas with the Chimps.
