ROD PUPPET I Have a Story To Tell Crayola Model Magic Crayola Washable Glue Paint Stir Stick or Substitute Toothpick Felt -.8 cm x 0. cm Pipe Cleaners Press the Model Magic onto, and around the paint stir stick. Make sure the stick goes right to the top of the Model Magic and wraps around the stick. Wrap the long pipe cleaner around the paint stick just below the chin of the head you create. Pull it tight. Make sure the arms are the same length on both sides of the puppet. DO NOT simply stick it on top of the stick or it will break when you try to use the puppet. Form the head. Use the dress pattern on page. Pin it to a piece of folded felt and cut it out to make the clothes for the puppet. Slip the dress onto the stick FROM THE BOTTOM. DO NOT try to put it over the head. Bamboo Skewers Scissors Glitter Glue Ribbon, String or Yarn Embellishments Choose two pipe cleaners to use for the arms. Twist them together to make one long pipe cleaner. Once the dress is in place, pull the pipe cleaners up and out to form the arms. Tie a ribbon or pipe cleaner around the waist to hold the dress in place.

ROD PUPPET I Have a Story To Tell IN THE CLASSROOM This is an excellent project for encouraging students to use oral language effectively, and to build a sense of community as they take on the role of a puppet they have created. Once the puppets are dry, place students into pairs. Ask them to take on the role of their puppet and then learn as much as they can about each other. Remind them that they should be working the puppet while they do this as if the puppet is doing the talking. Then ask students to remain in role and introduce their partner s puppet to the rest of the class, providing details about the puppet as part of the introduction. For example, I d like to introduce Lala. She is 8 years old, loves to swim and has a cat for a best friend. 7 8 Set the puppet aside. To make the hands, roll two balls of Model Magic the same size. Gently flatten the balls and use scissors to make cuts for fingers along one edge. Stick the skewer into the hand. Make sure it goes in as far as possible. Gently pinch the bottom of the hand to secure it to the stick. Round the fingers and add details. 9 Attach the end of the pipe cleaner to the skewer close to the bottom of the hand. Put a small amount of glue around the edge of the pipe cleaner. Repeat for the other hand. 0 Allow the puppet to dry for days. When it is dry use your puppet to tell a story. Move the hands by holding the stick and one skewer in one hand, and holding the opposite skewer in your other hand.

FUN FINGER PUPPET Crayola Model Magic Coverstock Paper cm x 9 cm Toothpicks Googly Eyes Masking Tape Stick a small piece of masking tape to the short end of the coverstock paper. Make sure half the tape is on the paper and half is hanging off the end like a tail. Wrap the paper around your index finger and secure it with the tape. Make sure it is loose enough to slide up and down your finger, but not so loose that it will flick off. Flatten a small amount of Model Magic and wrap it around the paper cylinder. Cover the entire cylinder and make sure it goes over the tip of your finger. IN THE CLASSROOM Roll a small ball of Model Magic for the head. Gently place it at the top of the cylinder. It will stick in place without glue. Even the quietest students are inspired to use oral language when they create small finger puppets. This easy and satisfying project is a wonderful way to spark creativity and imagination as students bring their small characters to life telling their own colourful stories. Use more Model Magic to form the puppet details. You may want to add googly eyes and/or other embellishments. Set the puppet aside to dry for hours.

GRAPHIC STORY Viola Desmond Crayola Watercolour Pencils Crayola Fine Line Black Markers Crayola Paint Brushes Crayola Marker and Watercolour Paper Rulers Pencils Research Viola Desmond. Focus on the events of November 8, 9. Identify the main characters in the story. List the actions and what the characters might have said in the order they occurred. Use pencil to draw in each panel. Draw important details to help tell the story. Draw speech bubbles, thought bubbles and narrative boxes. Leave them blank for now. Share your work with a partner to get feedback. Make thumbnail sketches for each scene. Stick figures are fine for this step. Decide how many of your thumbnail sketches you want on one page. Make any adjustments to your design based on the feedback you received. Add emanata to show what the character is feeling. Add motion lines. Use watercolour pencil techniques to colour each panel. Add the words in pencil. Draw panels on your pages. They can be any shape, for example, square, circle, rectangle. Leave a space between the panels. This space is called a gutter. Use a black, fine line marker to outline everything. Add any other details or more colour to complete the page. Gently erase the pencil lines.

TRIARAMA Retelling a Story Plastic Container Lid Model Magic Class Pack Crayola Markers Crayola Crayons Crayola Paint Brushes Light Weight Bristol Board 0 cm x 0 cm Water Containers Paper Towels Fold the Bristol board in half diagonally from one corner to the other. Make a firm crease. Open the Bristol board up and fold it diagonally in the opposite direction. Make a firm crease. Use crayon and marker to colour the details of your setting. Draw some marker onto a plastic lid. Paint into the marker with water to liquefy it, or colour with it directly. Make a dot in the centre of the Bristol board where the two folds meet. Cut along one of the folds and stop at the dot. Use Model Magic to create props and characters for your part of the story. Mark an X on one of the flaps. This side will be tucked under the other. Do not paint on this flap. Fold the Bristol board up and let one flap go over the other. Use paper clips to attach all triaramas together. Make sure they are in the correct order beginning, middle, middle, end.

STORY SOUVENIR Fabric Hanging Crayola Fabric Markers Crayola Fine Line Black Marker Crayola Glue Stick Crayola Glitter Glue Crayola Scissors Iron Draw a picture of something that reminds you of the story. Use fine line black marker to outline the drawing. Remove all the tape. Tape the drawing onto a piece of white Bristol board using small pieces of tape. Place the fabric on top of the drawing. Tape it in place with long pieces of masking tape along each side. Place the fabric on top of a pad of newsprint paper with the good side facing up. Place a piece of blank newsprint paper on top of the fabric. Polyester Cotton Fabric Bamboo Skewer Yarn or Ribbon Copy Paper Masking Tape White Bristol Board Newsprint Paper Use fabric markers to colour the picture directly onto the fabric. Press gently. Set the iron to cotton. Iron over the newsprint paper for about 0 seconds. This will set the colour making it permanent and bright.

STORY SOUVENIR Fabric Hanging IN THE CLASSROOM This is a stimulating project that connects the experience and memories of reading a story with a visual souvenir. The novelty of working with fabric adds to the enjoyment. The souvenir acts as reminder of the story and what students have learned from it. The souvenirs are great conversation starters for students and their families. Introduce students to the idea of souvenirs by discussing mementos they have collected, such as hockey shirts, stickers, baseball caps and stuffed toys. Encourage them to think of an image that stands out in their mind for the story they have been reading. 7 8 Fold the edges of the fabric under about cm. Use a glue stick to glue them flat. Place a bamboo skewer along the glued surface at the top. Fold the fabric over to hold the skewer in place. 9 Add glitter glue to highlight some areas of the design. 0 Attach yarn or ribbon to each end of the skewer. Add glitter glue to highlight some areas of the design 7

A TALE FOR ALL Storytelling/Audience Crayola Scissors Crayola Markers Copy Paper 7 cm x. cm Craft Foam Board cm x 0 cm Peel and Stick Craft Foam cm x 0 cm Gather a variety of found objects such as small paper cups, cardboard and foam pieces, and other textured surfaces. Tape string to a rolling pin. Use the paper you have printed to make an 8-page booklet. Follow the instructions found on page 0. Draw marker on the plastic surface using the flat side of the marker. Spray the marker ink lightly with a small amount of water. Draw your character on the paper side of the craft foam. Make sure it fills the whole space. Cut out the shape. Paper Towels Spray Bottles Plastic Placemat or other plastic surface Press an object into the wet ink to pick up as much ink as you can. Make a print on the paper by pressing the inked object onto it and applying pressure, or rolling the object across the surface. Peel the paper off the craft foam. Stick the craft foam shape onto the foam core board. You can make marks on the craft foam by drawing or poking it with a ball point pen. Press hard with the pen to leave an indent in the craft foam. 8

A TALE FOR ALL Storytelling/Audience IN THE CLASSROOM This project is a stimulating way for students to gain a deeper understanding of the idea that media texts have multiple interpretations. They use a variety of objects and markers to print lines and shapes on paper. The paper is then used to create an 8-page book with a story told entirely though images. When the book is complete they work with different partners each interpreting the story as they see it without having heard the other versions. Once all the stories have been told they work in a group to hear all the versions including the author s. Then they discuss what they discovered. Key questions for students to consider: ) How are the stories the same? ) How are the stories different? ) What did the story remind you of? ) How did you decide what the story was about? ) Whose version of the story is correct? ) How do you know? 7 8 Use the flat side of a marker tip to put ink on the foam. Place the stamp on the book and press hard to make the print. Remove the stamp to see your print. 9 Print the character on the remaining pages of the book. Add more details with fine line marker. You may want to add googly eyes. Let the details guide the story

HAUNTED HOUSE TALES Crayola Construction Paper Crayons Crayola Fine Line Black Markers Crayola Scissors Rulers Pencils Fold the paper into 8 boxes. Fold it in half twice, widthwise (short end to short end). Open it up and fold it in half lengthwise (long end to long end). Fold the paper in half widthwise (short end to short end). Make a small cut in the corner of the paper at the end of the line so you can insert your scissors. Draw an 'X' from one corner to the other on the nd box from the left ABOVE the horizontal fold. Draw an 'X' from one corner to the other on the rd box from the left BELOW the horizontal fold. Open up the paper and carefully insert your scissors. Cut along the zigzag line. Construction Paper 0. cm x.7 cm or.9 cm x 0. cm Use the 'X' lines as guides. Draw a triangle with the base on the horizontal fold in both boxes. Erase the rest of the 'X' lines. There should be a zigzag line in the middle of the paper. Fold the paper in half lengthwise (long end to long end). Hold the edges of the paper and push towards the centre until you see a box formed. Keep pushing until all the pages line up. 0

HAUNTED HOUSE TALES IN THE CLASSROOM It is helpful to have students make the simple 8-page booklet following the instructions found on page 0 before making this house-shaped one. Once they are good at creating it, the house-shaped book is much easier for them to make. It is an excellent way for them to apply and extend their learning. This house-shaped book is a novel way for students to write about things they have learned about such things as houses, how people live, and homes, for example, different living environments; architectural details; family traditions; houses of the future; famous houses; houses for fairy tales; and any story that takes place in a house. 7 8 Flatten the paper and fold it in half to make the book. Use construction paper crayons to colour the inside and the outside of the house. 9 Use a pencil to draw lines on the blank pages. Use a fine tip marker to write your story. Be careful to keep the pages in the correct order. 0 Fold the book together. View the book from all angles, inside and outside.

SEW A BOOK TEACHER - Print the first letter of each student s name on the cardstock paper. Draw on top of the letter using Crayola Washable Glue as your drawing tool. Accordion fold the glued papers. Measure 0 cm up from the bottom. Draw a line through the 0 cm mark parallel to the short end of the folded paper. Accordion fold the rest of the paper so that each fold is the same size as the first one. Do this on more papers.glue the papers together overlapping the end sections. Measure in cm from both ends of the line. Start the trunk of the tree at the cm marks. Draw the trunk and the crown. Leave some of the folds on the sides of the crown to hold the pages together when it is opened. Cut out the negative shapes. Accordion fold the glued papers. Make sure all the edges line up. Use construction paper to make a cover for the front and back of the book. Use a separate page to write information for each tree. Use the front and back of the book. There should be 0 different maple trees.

ENVELOPE BOOK Story Elements Crayola Crayons Crayola Markers Crayola Glue Sticks Crayola Washable Glue Crayola Scissors Small Envelopes - per student Small Pieces of Sponge Spread glue on the inside flap of one envelope. Hold another envelope front side facing down. Place it onto the glued flap so that it lines up with the crease. Glue all envelopes together. Cut out a small piece of plastic about cm x 0 cm. Tape it to the back of one of the envelopes. Draw lots of colour on the plastic with the flat side of the marker. Overhead Transparencies or Poly File Folders Masking Tape Ribbon Water Containers Paper Towels Wet the sponge and then squeeze most of the water out. Drag the dampened sponge through the marker and onto the envelope. Fill the whole envelope with colour. Gently remove the plastic from the envelope. You have made a stencil print. Continue in this way until all the envelopes are filled with colour. Turn the envelopes over. Use the small piece of plastic as a palette. Draw lots of marker onto the plastic. Dampen a sponge and dab it into the marker ink. Paint the envelopes with the sponge. Use lots of different colours. Write the title of a different story element on each envelope. - Characters - Setting - Problem - Solution - Events

ENVELOPE BOOK Story Elements IN THE CLASSROOM This little book is the perfect tool for helping students organize content. It can be used for any subject, but is excellent for focusing on story elements. Make a sample book to introduce it to your students. Teach or review the five elements of a story and write the titles on a chart paper. Provide students with sticky notes. Read a story to your students and ask them to identify different elements of the story as it is being read. From time to time pause and ask students to fill in information for an element on one of the sticky notes. Have some students place their sticky note on the chart paper under the appropriate title. Show students your sample envelope book and how it can be used to organize story elements. Discuss how they might illustrate and title each envelope using line and colour. Once the book is ready have them use it to organize information about a story they are reading. 7 8 Use line and colour to draw a picture that illustrates each element. Frame each rectangle with a different border pattern. Fold the pages accordion style. Make the first envelope with the flap the cover of your book. 9 Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to wrap around the folded stack of envelopes and across the flap. Glue the ribbon across the top envelope and flap at right angles to the bottom of the envelope. 0 Use the ribbon to tie the book together. Place written information about your stories inside each envelope.

CRAYON RESIST CARD Crayola Crayons Crayola Watercolour Paint Crayola Paint Brushes Cardstock Paper. cm x 7. cm Water Containers Plastic Placemats Green Masking Tape Fold the cardstock paper in half horizontally short end to short end. Tape the folded cardstock to a plastic placemat. Make sure the tape runs along the full length of each edge. Draw a design or picture on the paper. Colour the drawing with crayons. Press hard with the crayons and do not colour on the whole page. Use watercolours to paint over the drawing. Use several colours and let them bleed into each other. IN THE CLASSROOM Sprinkle some table salt over the paint while it is still wet. Allow the painting to dry, then gently brush away the salt. Carefully remove the tape from the edges. Write a message inside the card. This project is an especially effective way to communicate with parents in kindergarten and grade one. Once a month (or two) have children draw a picture of themselves and make a resist card. Write a short message inside to parents/ guardians updating them on their child s progress and showcasing the cognitive development demonstrated by the increasing number of details in the drawings, or have students write a message about what they are learning.

DECORATED PAGES Crayola Markers Crayola Regular Crayons Masking Tape Small Sponge Water Paper Towels Make small rolls of tape. Use the rolled tape to fasten the plastic transparency to the paper. Drag the dampened sponge over the marker ink and onto the paper. Continue in this way until the outer edges of the paper are covered with marker ink. Use crayons to colour a design on the paper. Do not colour all the spaces. Colour marker ink onto the plastic transparency. Apply lots of colour. Gently remove the plastic transparency from the paper. Marker and Watercolour Paper.9 cm x 0. cm Overhead Transparency or Poly File Folders.7 x. cm Place a small piece of sponge into water. Squeeze out most of the water.
