2 William Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream is a magical play where the world of fairies and humans collide! Ahead of our Curve Young and Community production of A Midsummer Night s Dream in August, we are inviting local children to help transform our famous, curved glass windows into an enchanted scene of fairies, pixies and woodland folk. However, they aren t your average fairies and pixies, as they use all of the unwanted items around them to make their clothes and wings. In this pack you will find plenty of ideas suitable for all ages and skillsets, so that all of your children and young people can get involved and find something that they would like to make. Once your child has created their mythical creature, please label it with their first name, school name and class year, and then bring them into Curve and pop them in our Fairy Drop Box by reception. WHAT DO YOU NEED? You don t have to use these items but here are some examples of things that might be useful: Wooden spoons and forks (provided) Cardboard tubes Bubble wrap Dish scourers Cotton wool Cotton buds Buttons Odd socks Odd bits of ribbon Food packaging (crisp packets/bread wrapper etc) Old paintbrushes Doilies Egg cartons Tin foil Feathers Lolly sticks Fairy cake cases Pipe cleaners Masking tape & glue Paint & glitter Coloured card/paper

3 Take a wooden spoon and attach two cottonbuds with tape to create arms. Draw a face using paint or a marker pen. Using some recycled paper (bread packaging, for example), wrap the body and secure with tape. Cut several circles out of packaging and waste paper. Make a small hole in the centre of each circle and feed on to the spoon. Fix the circles underneath with glue or tape. Create wings by bending a piece of wire into two loops, and twist in the middle to secure. Attach this to the wooden spoon with tape. Using found objects, such as a scourer, plastic fork or fairy cake cases, decorate the fairy by adding hair, a crown or collar. Finish your design by painting the cottonbud arms.

4 Start the fairy in the same way as Fairy 1 by drawing a face on to a wooden spoon. On this fairy, the hair is made from a blue scouring pad that was unravelled, and the crown is a bottle top with triangles cut into its edges. Be careful doing this, an adult s help may be required! This time the dress is made from a crisp packet (make sure it is clean!) Turning the packet upside down, make a small hole at the base of the seal. Feed on to the spoon handle. Snip holes either side for the arms to fit through. Gather at waist with an elastic band or tape to make a dress shape. Fill out dress by creating a ragged edged underskirt from bubble wrap. To make the wings, fold a doily in half over a piece of wire and glue down. Fix the wings on to the back of the fairy. The wire makes them moveable! To finish, use ribbons, buttons or other decorative items to style her hair and decorate her dress and belt.

5 Glue together two lolly sticks for legs, and affix half a lolly stick for a body. Wrap foil or tape around the join. On this example we used fairy cake cases to create a skirt, but any paper or packaging material will work too! Use the Template Sheet for a fairy face and choose a hairstyle. Cut these out of coloured card and glue in place. Glue two feathers on the back of the fairy to create wings, and wrap a pipe cleaner around the body for arms.

6 Take a plastic fork, and paint the spokes to create hair. Draw on the eyes using a marker pen. Attach two cottonbuds with tape to create arms, as you did with Fairy 1. Cut the central triangle from an egg carton, and feed on to the end of the fork to form a top. Attach a cake case collar, and paint the cottonbud arms and handle of the fork to create legs. Create a belt by wrapping some paper around the bottom of the egg carton top and add a button for detail. To create a beard, glue cotton wool on to the face. If you would like it to be coloured, roll the cotton wool in PVA glue before sticking it to the face first as it will paint easier! Finally, cut out a set of wings and ears from the template sheet and affix to the pixie using tape.

7 These pixies can be created using any found items. In this example, we have chosen a used paintbrush. Select a face and wings from the Template Sheet. Draw around the wing and face templates and cut them out from coloured card and bubble wrap. You could also design your own if you like. As before, the arms are made by affixing cotton buds to the brush using tape. Paint the arms your chosen colour, and decorate with a button.

8 As before, draw a face on a wooden spoon. To make the glasses, cut two small sections of a drinking straw to make tiny circles and glue in place. When dry draw on the rest of the glasses. Cut out the pixie hair from the Template Sheet in coloured card and glue in place. Squash a cardboard tube and cut a tunic top using the top template from the Template Sheet to judge the size. Fix the lolly stick in place with glue to create arms. To create wings, cut bubble wrap into a bow tie shape, and tie in the centre. Fix to the back of the pixie using glue or tape.

9 Toadstools are very simple to make. Slip an upside yoghurt/dessert pot over the top of the cardboard tube and glue in place. Using contrasting colours, paint the toadstool and add spots and maybe glitter, too!
