1 PLAY AREAS SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES PICTORIAL DESCRIPTION RESOURCES Language Action Songs Large group Music and movement (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Singing songs is a fun way to develop language and learn new words. Singing songs with actions is a fun energetic and enhances children s well-being and develops rhythm, balance, coordination, which is essential for their physical development. A variety of songs can be sung: cultural songs, gospel songs, songs that teach learning concepts. Let them use the musical instruments that they made. Scarves or ribbon are also a fun movement action to include. Actions songs Musical instruments Ribbon/scarves Art Small group Garbage Man (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Set up the art table with newspaper, put out the selection of recycled material, A3 paper or cardboard. Children to work together and create their own Mr Garbage Man using the recycled items. Keep the name/logo of the recycled material visible when pasting on paper and encourage children to read the labels. Have children select items to make a man ask children to name and identity the body parts. Ask open-ended questions: What you are making, What are you going to use for feet, What is that, What is his name? Let the children tell you a story about Mr Garbage Man: What do you think he would say to people who throw things in the street? Have the children identify and name the products they used, count the number of items they used or identify the colours. 2 PLAY AREAS SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES PICTORIAL DESCRIPTION RESOURCES Blocks Individual Construction and blocks (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Put out mega/large construction blocks or use various sized boxes or Lego/Tugo kits (Lego and Tugo kit for older children). Include recycled material: toilet rolls, bottle tops, egg trays, small boxes or yoghurt tubs. Let children build something (construction ). Ask open ended questions: What are you building, How strong is it, How can you use a toilet roll/yoghurt tub in your design? Construction blocks Lego Tugo kit Toilet rolls Egg trays Small boxes Small yoghurt tubs Art Construction Small group Build a car park/garage (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Invite the children to build their own garage or car park. For younger children, have a ready-made example of a garage and/or car park and discuss the structure, lanes, ramps, etc. Let them work as a group to design and build their own garage using the various recycled material. Use lid of a Typek box to build the top floor of the car park. Put out all material, and to save time you can pre-paint the boxes and toilet rolls as an earlier in the week. Let children use items to build their own creation. Ask open ended questions: How you going to build the ramp, How many parking bays did you make, What traffic sign is that? Assist where and when required. Alternative: Using a flattened box, let child create a community street and drive cars around it. 3 Construction Small group Build a house (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Children build a house. Discuss types of houses and the structures they are made of which includes the foundation, windows, door, roof and rooms. Leave them to design, build and decorate their house. Ask open ended questions: How will there make a window, What are they doing? Large boxes Egg cartons Toilet rolls Tape String Scissor Stanley knife Tip: close supervision is required if a Stanley knife is being used by the children

4 Art Construction Individual or small group Make a car (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Children are going to build and decorate a car using recycled materials. Have an example of car that younger children can refer to, discuss the car and explain how they will make the car so that they can either sit inside and drive or remove the bottom of the box so that they can climb in and run/walk to drive their car around. After all groups/individuals have built their cars they will have a relay car race using their cars refer to outdoor. Children to decide what colour car they want and then paint the box or can use coloured paper or crayons to decorate the car. Any cutting of boxes, using Stanley knife, must be done by an adult. Ask open ended questions: What colour car do you want, What type of car are you making, How fast will it go, How many tyres do you need to use? 5 PLAY STATIONS Art Construction Small group (4 to 6 children) SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES PICTORIAL DESCRIPTION RESOURCES Make a car/bus /taxi (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Using egg cartons, children design and make their own car or bus. To assist younger children show them a readymade example. Ask children if they want to make a car, bus or taxi. Assist with cutting if a Stanley knife is being used. Depending on age, children can glue bottle tops on their car. Older children can be assisted to make the axle of the car. Punch a hole in the centre of the bottle top using a skewer. Pierce a hole through the bottom side of the egg carton (going out the opposite side). Place the wheels on the stick. Repeat the steps for the second set of wheels. Children can cut out pictures of passengers to stick onto the windows. Children can paint or decorate their design as they wish. They can place people figurines inside the egg carton made from clay or any other found objects. To extend the let them draw a street on the floor using chalk. Allow time for play to unfold using the vehicles that have been made. 6 Art Small group Art Construction Small group Make coloured shapes (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Children trace large shapes onto cardboard using foam shapes. Let them colour or paint the shapes. Cut out the shapes. Discuss shapes and colours with the child by naming the shapes, counting the sides and corners. Shapes will be used for the Twister game refer to outdoor. Make an animal farm (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Discuss what a farm looks like and what we find on a farm. Use pictures of a farm in the discussion. Let children go find objects outside which they can use to build a farm. Objects can include: sticks, stones, branches, leaves, flowers, sand, pine cones, etc. To save time pre-collect items and let children choose what they want to use. Let children use egg cartons to make a spider assist them with the cutting. As a group, encourage the children to build a farm using found and recycled materials. If you have plastic farm animals, tractors, etc. include them to enhance children s play. Let children discuss their farm, identify and name the farm animals, insects and flowers. Count the different type of animals, insects, water troughs, people, etc. While building, let them sing the Old MacDonald song. 7 Outdoor games Large group Hopscotch (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Develops gross motor skills, bilateral coordination, balance, social skills, rules of game, memory recall. Player must hop over square where bean bag/stone/bottle top is. They are out if: bean bag/stone/bottle top fails to land in the proper square; If they step on a line or they lose their balance when bending over to pick up the bean bag/stone/bottle top and put the other foot down; if they hop into square where the bean bag/stone/bottle top is; if they put two feet down in a single square. For older children: you can draw or use shapes they then select a shape and then they have to hop using one or two feet and try to find or land on the shape they choose. For older children: draw the numbers in a circle. Optional: have children make hopscotch using sticks or stones. Have Races have 2 teams competing in: sack, egg and spoon, wheelbarrow or two-legged races. Balancing bean bag on head (older children can be blindfolded). 8 Outdoor games Large group Giant Twist n Touch (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Develops gross motor skills, bilateral coordination, crossing midline, balance. Make your own twist n touch on large piece of paper or draw on ground and place coloured shapes/ squares. The adult calls out instruction: left leg on red circle, right hand on blue circle. Aim is to see how everyone stretches and tangles and who can stay up the longest. Variation Use all the coloured shapes the children made to create a very large twister game. Make your own spinning card using a paper plate and divide into four: left half has left foot and hand and right half has right foot and hand add in the different coloured shapes. Use a straw and fix into centre of plate using a split pin. Spin the straw, where it points indicates where hands and feet are to be placed. 9 Outdoor games Small group Bowling (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Develops gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, spatial perception Paste numbers, colours and shapes onto skittles. Teacher to call out a, colour, number or shape. Child to aim at the identified skittle, bowl and knock it over. They can continue until they have knocked all the skittles down. The next child has a turn. If they miss move onto the next child. Divide the group into 2 or 4 teams (depending on the size of the group). One team stands at the start line and another team stand at the finish line. Team get into their made cars and race to finish line climb out of car and give the car to the next team member to race back continue until everyone has had a turn. Set out various dress-up clothes, shop and a kitchen scene. They can go and buy food items from a shop, cook a meal, set the table and eat. Use bottle tops as money write or paste monetary value on tops. Create a cake, a garden or food (ELDA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Put out the various items and let children create a cake and add candles using sticks and decorate with bottle tops and flowers. Create a garden using items from the garden or make a cake. Make a plate of food. Ask open ended questions such as What are you making, Who s birthday is it, How many candles are there, What food is that a fruit or vegetable, What is in your garden, What colour flower it that?
