Turn Beautiful Artist's Paper into a Book Let's start Have all of your materials at your work station ready to use. 2. Remove five pages from the A3 pad. Take one sheet and fold the paper in half lengthways, scoring the fold with your butter knife. Learn how to create a gorgeous book to hold all your treasured artwork. A3 Roymac Rains watercolour pad (for pages & cover) Cutting mat Butter knife Ruler Pencil Glue Decorative acid free paper Scissors Etching tool A4 piece of foam core 4 tapestry needles Wax linen string Butter knife or scoring tool Total creative time: Approximately 2 hours 3. Fold in half again (lengthways), scoring with the knife. This will give a concertina effect to your paper. Repeat this process with all five A3 pages from your pad. 4. Create a rough edge by using your butter knife to slice along each fold. Keep the folded edge facing closest to you and a firm hand on top of the paper while sliding the knife through. Repeat for all 5 sheets. 5. You will now have 4 thin strips of paper from each of your A3 sheets. Fold each strip in half and use the knife to help score your fold. These are called folios. Repeat for all strips. 6. Use the back cover of your A3 pad to cut two pieces of board that will become the outer covers of your artist book. We suggest making these slightly larger especially on the two short ends Micador
7. Take your two pieces of card for the outer cover and your decorative paper. Cut the decorative paper to cover the card, allowing approximately 2cm around all sides. 8. Cover the card in glue and stick down to your decorative paper. Repeat again for your back cover. 9. Cut the excess decorative paper off the corners of your cover, allowing 2mm where your paper meets the card so that none of the card will be seen. Repeat this for the back cover. 10. Use glue to fold and stick all the edges down so that the entire cover is now coated in the decorative paper. Repeat for the back cover. 11. Take one folio and measure 1.5cm in from the folded edge. Mark with a pencil and cut this piece away, retaining it for later. 12. Utilising the two pieces of paper that are now separate, hide the gluing and folds on the inside of your front and back cover. Simply make any adjustments to the size with scissors and glue down. 13. Now, lets return to the small edge off cut from Step 11. Find the centre point of this piece by folding it in half both ways to mark it. Working lengthways, between the centre and the edge on both sides, mark two crosses - evenly spaced. You will end up with four crosses in total. 14. Working on a piece of foam core to prevent damage to your bench, place the template exactly in the fold of a folio and pierce through each cross with your etching tool. Making sure to push the tool right through to the foam core, making a hole. Repeat for all folios. 15. Using the same method, place your template approximately 2cm from the short edge of your front cover and pierce through. Jiggle the tool around in these holes to make them a little bit bigger. Repeat for the back cover. 16. Gather your work thus far on your bench with your 4 tapestry needles, scissors and wax linen thread ready for the next step. 17. Take two long pieces of string (approx. 60cm) and thread a needle onto both ends. When you have finished you will have a needle on each end of the two pieces of string. 18. Taking one of your folios, thread one pair of needles (one piece of string) through the two holes on the right hand side. Make sure that you push the needles through from the inside of the fold. 19. Take the needle on the right hand edge and thread through the corresponding hole on the front cover. Take care to wrap the thread around and come through the hole from the decorated paper side. 20. Repeat this process for the first needle s pair. When complete, ensure that the two pieces of string have been threaded through and are resting on the inside. Refer to the image. Repeat this process for the other pair of needles Micador
21. Pull each piece of thread tightly so as to gather the front cover and the folio together. Repeat Step 20 Step 22 to reinforce the bind. 27. This is what the side of your book will look like with all the folios attached. 22. Once complete, let all your thread and needles fall down the front cover facing away from you. Place another folded folio on top of the pile, you should be able to see the four holes along the top of the outside of the fold. 23. Using the two needles that correspond to the two holes on the right hand side you want to take one needle and go down through the first hole and then up through the second hold. Repeat this step with the second needle going down through the second hole and up through the first. This is called a cross over stitch. 24. Repeat Step 24 with the two holes and two needles on the left hand side. 25. Tighten by pulling both pieces of the same string away from each other. 26. To secure this folio you need to do what is called a link back stitch. Take the piece of string on the far right and wrap it around all of the stitched string between the cover and the folios. See the image for reference; the small loop in the image shows where your thread needs to go. Repeat Step 23 Step 27 (cross over stitch and link back stitch) until all folios are attached to the front cover. The only changes in this step is that every time you attach a new folio and do the link back stitch, make sure the stitch is made three folios back including the folio you are attaching. 28. To attach the cover, line up the holes and thread the first needle around and through the front of the decorative paper. 29. Wrap the string around the spine of the back cover as shown in the image. Repeat this process with the other three holes and needles. 30. Create a rough edge by using your butter knife to slice along each fold. Keep the folded edge facing closest to you and a firm hand on top of the paper while sliding the knife through. Repeat for all 5 sheets. 31. Once more, thread each needle through the hole on the back cover; ensure the needle passed through the decorative paper side first. This time, however, instead of looping around again, thread through the corresponding hole on the last folio and allow the needle to come to rest between the two pieces of paper in that folio. Take each needle the string that has already bound that folio and loop it around itself to form a knot and secure in place. Finished! Snip the excess string with scissors and your book is now complete! 2015 Micador
Mega Markers Pear Artwork Micador Mega Markers create amazing results when mixed with water. Follow these steps and learn how to produce beautiful watercolour effects with this pear artwork, and create a unique piece for your home or classroom. Roymac Rains Watercolour Paper Micador Mega Markers Roymac Achiever round size 6 Let's start Design Use a yellow Mega Marker to draw the shape of the pear and roughly colour it in. You don t need to be too careful with how neat you are, the markers are watersoluble and we will soon blend with water. Light and Dark Shade the pear using the orange marker and then outline the shaded side of the pear with black. Watercolour Now wet the brush and paint over the marker, allowing it to blend together and create beautiful watercolours. Colour Explosion Take the orange marker and with a relative amount of force, hit the nib down onto the water and watch the colour flow and bleed into your work. Do the same with the black marker. 5. Touch Up You can touch up your work at any time with a wet brush, this will help to blend the ink together. Then your artwork is ready to be displayed!
Cartoon Portrait Create a caricature with real personality! This fun exercise is suitable for students of all ages. Your piece can be a self portrait, a character, or a portrait of a family member or friend. It would make a great gift idea for a special occasion too! Micador Mega Markers Micador Vibrant Watercolours Roymac Rains Watercolour Paper- 300 gsm Roymac Achiever Brush Set Micador Lotus Palette 1. Using your Micador Black Mega Marker draw a face. This can be a caricature, a friend, a family member. Link it to an event - draw your Dad for Father s Day, etc. 2. Keep the drawing flat, lightly spray water from about 20cm away on an angle. The spray should be a spray/mist not direct water. 3. The colour will spread and bleed across the page. Avoid getting too close with the spray bottle or making the paper too wet. Allow to dry. 4. Mix your Vibrant Watetcolours - start with 5 cent piece size of the watercolour and cover with water and mix well. Here's a tip or two! When drawing, avoid shading areas in black. When spraying with water start slowly - too much water can merge the image into a black puddle and you will lose all of your line work. 5. Using your Micador Stay Anywhere Permanent Pen use it to refine the drawings necessary details, eyes, mouth, hair etc. 6. Now use your watercolour to add colour - skin type tone for face and neck, hair, clothes, background. Remember it isn t realistic so don t be afraid to have fun with colour!
Fluoro Watercolour Animals Teach students about resist art techniques using Micador Fluoro Oil Pastels and Vibrant Watercolours. This exercise is suitable for students of all ages, but is particularly good for preps and lower grades. Micador Fluoro Oil Pastels Micador Vibrant Watercolours Roymac Rains Watercolour Paper- 300 gsm Roymac Achiever Brush Set Micador Lotus Palette 1. On a dry surface using Micador Fluoro Oil Pastels choose the colours you want to use and using a series of lines, shapes, or squiggles make a pattern on the animal. This will act as a resist for the watercolour. 2. Mix your Vibrant Watetcolours - start with 5 cent piece size of the watercolour and cover with water and mix well. 3. Now go over the surface with various colours of the Micador Vibrant Watercolour. You do not need to wet the surface first. 4. Continue to add colour until your animal is complete. When dry, cut out the animal shape. Use them to decorate the classroom, as gift cards, or add sticks and use as puppets! Here's a Tip or two! These animals are meant to be vibrant. Watercolour dries lighter so aim to put on more intense colour than you might initially choose. Add a bit of excitement and reference other teaching areas by using letters, numbers, and/or other shapes.
Watercolour effects with Mega Markers Let's start Draw your image on Roymac Rains Watercolour Paper using a Black Micador Mega Marker. 2. Lightly spray with water using a spray bottle with a fine mist. You will see the black marker bleed to reveal beautiful pink and blue hues. Create beautiful watercolour effects using Micador Mega Markers and water on Roymac Rains Watercolour Paper. Then outline with Micador Stay Anywhere Permanent Pen to create a striking image. 3. Set your picture aside until it is completely dry. You can also use a hairdryer to speed up this process! 4. Using a Micador Stay Anywhere Permanent Pen, outline around where the ink has spread. Continue until you have outlined the entire image. Roymac Rains Paper Black Micador Mega Markers Micador Stay Anywhere Permanent Pen Micador Essential Graphite Pencil 5. Use a white Paint Pen or white acrylic paint to add extra detail or touch up any areas you like. Your artwork is now complete! 0614
Glow in the dark : Nocturnal Animals Nocturnal animals are fascinating creatures, but as they are more active at night they are hard to spot - until now! Print out your chosen nocturnal animal from the templates provided over the page and choose from a possum, bat or owl or just print them all! Using our fluoro products, you can create your own nocturnal scene and bring them to life with the Micador Dark Arts Magic Black Light! Micador HB essential pencil Roymac Rains watercolour paper (or cartridge paper) A soft brush (we used Roymac Achiever, Round No. 6) Micador Dark Arts Magic Black Light Micador Dark Arts Fluoro Paint Discs (or early start Low-Mess Washable Fluoro Paint Discs) Other Micador fluoro products you can use... Micador Large Oil Pastels - Fluoro Micador Fluoro Silky Twistaz Let's start Print your animal 2. Add pencil detail 3. Painting time 4. Ready, Set, GLOW! Print out your chosen Micador nocturnal animal template. For best results trace onto Roymac Rains watercolour paper (or cartridge paper as it will last longer than copy paper, which will buckle and rip when wet). Depending on the animal chosen, add detail with pencil. Try ears, eyes, nose or claws. Add tone and shadows to accentuate the animal s features and patterns of its fur. If using our fluoro oil pastels, use a resist technique and draw stripes and line detail prior to painting. As water resists oil, you will retain the detail applied. Paint over outlines with Micador fluoro watercolour paint. Leave eyes unpainted until the end, so you maintain the whites of the eyes and add your chosen colour to the iris (e.g. blue or yellow). Once paint has dried, try Micador Fluoro Silky Twistaz to add some fun detail, like lines or spots! As this product is water-soluble it must be applied after painting. Punch a hole in your artwork and attached some string to it. Next, secure to a tree or hang it inside from a plant in a darkened room. At night (or with the lights off) shine a Micador Dark Arts Magic Black Light on your creations and watch your nocturnal animals come to life!
