A 1/4 inch Comb Brush would work in some areas; use this brush vertically when laying longer hairs. To use short hairs use the Comb Brush horizontally. If you squish a round brush so the individual hairs spread out this will also work. The dagger still works the best for me. PREPARATION Sand and seal with DecoArt Multi Purpose Sealer. Dry wipe away any sanding dust with the Tack Cloth. Basecoat the front of the piece with half Gesso + Honey Brown. Sand lightly. Repeat these steps. Base the sides (the edge) of the painting with the color of your choice. Let all these steps dry thoroughly and trace the pattern on with gray graphite paper. Raccoon: Please refer to the color worksheet often as you paint the raccoon. PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS Basing Light and Dark Areas Base in the raccoon with a large flat brush for the large areas: switch as needed to smaller sizes for smaller areas. If necessary try not to paint over the pattern lines; they will be covered later as you paint the hair. Use Lamp Black to base all the black areas in and Warm White to base all the white areas. Ears Use a Shader size 6 to base in the unpainted edge around the right ear and there is just a tiny bit showing on the left ear. Use slightly heavier paint. Use a 1/4 inch Comb Brush to pull up the hair. Make sure it is not too long. Next pull the inside hair in the ears with a 1/4 comb brush with Warm White. Look at the photo for stroke direction. Eyes With the round brush, paint a dash of Grey Mix at the top of each eyeball, then use the tip of the brush to place a sparkle dot of Warm White on the center of each dash. This is shown on the worksheet. Paint a thin line of reflected color along the bottom edge of each eyeball. Paint a shorter highlight line below this with Grey Mix. Add Warm White to the corner of the right eye. Study the photo carefully. Nose, Mouth and Nose Highlight First paint the nose in with Lamp Black: add a highlight on the nose with the Grey Mix then a shine on the nose with Warm White. Outline the nostrils with Grey Mix if you choose. Shadow underneath the mouth with the Grey Mix; add a few hairs underneath the mouth with Warm White using the 1/4 inch Comb Brush. 2 artistsclub.com

4 Developing Fur Study the worksheet and color photo. Pay close attention to the direction of the hair strokes as you are painting. Almost the entire raccoon will be developed with individual hairs using the dagger brush. Wet the dagger brush with water, spread the individual hairs out on the paper. Start making tiny hairs in the black areas with the Grey Mix then add some lighter hairs with Warm White. You may need to do this several times to make layers of hairs. Pull some Burnt Umber hairs with a liner brush in the eye patches and touches of Ultramarine Blue here and there. Remember to paint the back of the raccoon in the same manner. Use only grey strokes as the back of the raccoon is in the distance. Whiskers Use the size 0 Liner brush and thinned Warm White to paint the whiskers; set them in by patting the base of the whiskers with a size 2 Shader brush. 4 artistsclub.com

6 Leaves Around the Tree Trunk Base the leaves in with a 1/4 inch Wash brush using both Sap Green and Viridian. To highlight, load Warm White to the bottom of the brush, pick out a few edges and pull into the leaves. There is very little detail. Add a few twigs with Traditional Burnt Umber and the lighter twigs inside the knot hole with the Grey Mix. 6 artistsclub.com

7 FINISHING Finishing Detail on the Knot Hole If you notice on the bottom of the right hand side of the knot hole I have a bit of a ragged edge. Take a 1/4 inch Comb brush vertically and chop edges to the trunk slightly. Notice that there is a grey edge next to his back to create depth. Add darks and lights as needed to finish the trunk.
