Preparation: Sand and seal the surface with DecoArt MultiPurpose Sealer. Sand again and wipe away sanding dust with a Tack Cloth. Apply one or two coats of Gesso to the entire surface using a foam brush; sand lightly between each coat. Next base the bottom painting surface 1

3 with one coat of Peaches and Cream, sand lightly. This does not have to be completely covered. Paint the top arched part and shelf with Warm White. Transfer the main elements of the pattern to the surface, using Gray Graphite Paper. MEDIUM: Previously I painted with all oil paints and now I have been painting some projects with acrylics. I have had a hard time trying to keep my acrylic paints wet. I am learning to put a drop of DecoArt Drying Time Extender in each paint puddle before I start. SKY: The only two colors showing are Bright Yellow and Bright Orange + Warm White. Paint these vertically with the large flat brush. COLOR MIXTURES FOR FOLIAGE I have a tendency to brush mix my colors basically because that is the way I was taught. It gives a variety of values and color changes especially when doing landscapes. On worksheet #1 I have listed the value of greens I used for this painting although I can never quite get the exact same color. Many times I mix just a touch of Ultramarine Blue or Indian Turquoise with a variety of greens to add just a slightly different flavor to the color. Foliage (Greens): Black Forest (darkest color), Leaf Green (medium color), Citron Green (lightest color). All these colors can be used alone, mixed with Ultramarine Blue, Indian Turquoise, Yellow Ochre mixed with Warm White. It is fun to play with the colors. The darker colors would be toward the bottom of the ground and rock area, around the mill and the lighter colors toward the top of the foliage. Purples: Mix Ultramarine Blue + enough Brilliant Red to turn the color mixture purple. Add Warm White to lighten and Lamp Black to darken the shade Oranges: Brilliant Red + Yellow Ochre Painting Instructions: I have included some step-by-step worksheets; keep them handy and refer to them often during the painting of the project. Although this project looks like it is quite detailed, many of the brushstrokes are repeated throughout the instructions. Read the instructions through once before starting. 2

4 Bushes: Using the ½ Angular Bristle Brush, or a slightly worn size 12 Shader, start placing trees around the mill and waterfall. Remember to have enough paint, evenly distributed on the brush to work. Work the darker green shades at the base of the ground area and around the mill. Add the purple and Indian Turquoise for shadow foliage behind and front of the trees. Tap the lighter and brighter colors toward the top of the trees. Make clusters of foliage but make sure they are not circles or groupings you can count. Add trunks and limbs through the foliage with Traditional Burnt Umber and Warm White using a liner brush. Thin the paint down with water if needed. I used all the colors on the worksheet plus I added Bright Orange + Yellow Ochre + Brilliant Red adding Warm White for lighter tones. Mill: Paint the mill using the smaller flats and liner for details. Begin painting the darker sides using Heritage Brick. The lighter areas are Yellow Ochre + a touch of Warm White. Work the colors together where they meet using vertical streaks of the brush to create an indication of boards. These are not detailed. The darkest side (the right side that fades into the bushes) stays dark with no highlights. Paint the windows with a dark mixture of Traditional Burnt Umber + Lamp Black. Swipe a touch of Warm White while the paint is still wet on the door. The door frames are Dove Gray. The fence posts are Warm White, use a liner brush. Paint the roof with Slate Grey (follow the slant of the roof) highlight with Dove Grey; use a size 0 Shader brush. The overhang and roof edges are Dove Grey put in with a size 0 Liner brush. 3 TROUGH, WHEEL and BUILDING FOUNDATION: Study the worksheet. Basecoat the trough, the foundation under the wheel and the building foundation under the mill with Driftwood using a size 2 Shader brush. Trough lines and posts are put in with the liner brush using a liner and Dove Grey. Indicate stones under the building and rock foundation with the side of a size 2 Shader brush. Paint the the water wheel and the inside of the wheel, where the water falls with Lamp Black. Put the strokes in with Brilliant Red. Highlight a few by adding a touch of Warm White to the red mix. ROCKS: Base the rocks in with a size 2 Shader

5 brush, highlight the shadowed rocks with Slate Grey and the others with Yellow Ochre + a touch of Warm White. Pull up a few bushes using the size 2 Shader brush. WATERFALL and SPILL FROM THE WATER WHEEL: Basecoat the waterfall with Ultramarine Blue + a touch of Lamp Black. Highlight with Warm White pulling vertical strokes in the direction (slant) of the water. Leave some of the blue basecoat of the waterfall showing. Add touches of foam by tapping with a ¼ Angular Bristle brush. Pull the water down from the water wheel using a liner brush. Put foam in the same way as you put the foam in the waterfall. WATER: Using a size 12 Shader brush, paint the water with short downward strokes. Add Ultramarine Blue + Traditional Burnt Umber for the dark shading under the rocks, Heritage Brick, Yellow Ochre to reflect the mill. Add touches of greens, orange, touches of the purple mix. The center of the water is the lightest with the varieties of different blues + Warm White. Waterlines and ripples are made with the bottom of the flat brush but with a light touch. Geese: Paint the geese Warm White. Very little detail. Add shading with Ultramarine Blue under the neck and back feathers using a size 2 Shader brush. Pupils are made with a dot of Lamp Black made with the size 0 Liner. Shade around the pupils when they are dry with a little bit of Ultramarine Blue + Warm White. Beaks are Brilliant Red + Yellow Ochre + Warm White to highlight line on top of the beak. Tap some bushes in with a variety of greens, oranges, purples, reds, anything left on your palette. Put a few waterlines under the water with Warm White, and you are finished. Finishing: Finish with DecoArt DuraClear Varnish Matte. I would suggest at least 2 coats, sanding lightly between coats. 4
