3 #L860 2 Langnickel Angle (Americana Décor 1 Angle Brush #28001) Preparation: 1. Optional: if adding drawer knobs, drill three holes along bottom board of the shelf frame. 2. Completely seal one of the inserts with DecoArt MultiPurpose Sealer; using the glaze wash brush. Allow to dry. Lightly sand, wipe off with a lint-free cloth. Lightly sand over any rough areas of the shelf, wipe off with a lint-free cloth. Basecoat the entire front and sides of the shelf with Vintage Chalky Paint; using the 2 angle. Apply two coats; allowing two hours drying time in between coats. Basecoat backsides of shelf and insert with Everlasting Chalky Paint; using the 2 angle. Apply two coats; allowing two hours drying time in between coats. Optional could paint another design on opposite side of insert, instead of basecoating with Everlasting. 3. Spread the Texture Crackle evenly over the surface of the insert; using the palette knife. Smooth it out and then stamp into the crackle using the (optional) foliage stamp to create a pattern over the entire surface area. This can also be accomplished by stippling, using the ¾ Angular Bristle Brush) When dry, apply one coat of Multi-Purpose Sealer over the crackle; using the glaze wash brush. Allow to dry. Now basecoat the surface with Green Mist; using the glaze wash brush, achieve an opaque coverage. Painting Instructions: Sky Area 4. Using the gray graphite paper, a traced pattern and a stylus transfer the horizon and snow hill lines to the surface. Use the graph ruler to aid in the transfer of any straight lines, by dragging the stylus along the ruler s edge. Distant Horizon Shrubs 5. With a mixture of Admiral Blue + Green Mist 1:1, dance in the shrubs along the horizon; using the large texture brush. Load the heel of the Texture brush with the mixture, the toe with Snow White, lightly blend on your palette, and dance in the shrubs. Then pick up Snow White on the Texture brush, randomly dance lightly across the top of the shrubs to reinforce the highlights and separation. For proper use of the Texture brush, use the following method. Dampen the bristles with water to start the separation of bristles. Tap bristles into the paint on your palette, hold it perpendicular to your palette, pounce it up and down to get some of the paint off keeping the paint sparse on the brush. Note this brush can be used on the whole foot or just the toe. 2

4 Tap lightly on the surface, dance with the brush up and down, rolling the brush in different directions in between your fingers when it is up in the air (like dancing the twist, light on your feet). Allow some drying time in between dances so the paint sets up and you don t end up with a globby or muddy look. Horizon Bare Trees 6. Load the 2 shader across the chisel edge with Snow White, base the tree trunks, then up on the chisel edge, pull the branches. Horizon and Snow Hills 7. Corner load the angle with Sea Glass, float a very wide highlight across the top of the horizon and snow hills; mop to soften. Then chisel float* Sea Glass randomly down into the snow hill areas. *Chisel float by corner loading the angle, blend off on your palette, lay the bristles of the brush flat on the surface, chisel edge up. Push the paint on the bristles from left to right in a scratching motion, allowing the bristles to pull a broken line that is slightly floated. Corner load the angle with Snow White, float a narrower highlight across the top of the horizon and snow hills; mop to soften. Then chisel float* Snow White randomly down into the snow hill areas. When dry, transfer the structures to the surface; using the graph ruler to aid in the transfer of any straight lines, by dragging the stylus along the ruler s edge. Background Pines 8. With a pencil and the graph ruler, lightly transfer the center line for each pine. Now slightly dampen the surface with clean water where the pine will be pulled. The dampened surface will allow the pines to softly bleed; giving the illusion of the pines in the distance. Use the 6 filbert for the smaller pines and the 8 filbert for the larger pines, load with Black Green across the chisel edge. Up on the chisel edge, vertically pull the very top of the pine. Horizontally tap from left to right for the boughs, slowly and slightly widening as you work towards the base of the pine. Allow a bit of the background to show through; so the pine doesn t look like a triangle. For snow on the pines, repeat the steps lightly with Snow White, randomly tapping on the boughs. Background Shrubs 9. With the appropriate size Texture brush and Black Green, dance in the shrubs behind the structures and foreground. Then with Snow White on the toe of the Texture brush, lightly and randomly dance snow on each shrub. The snow will also help to separate shrub clusters. Painting Structures 10. Use the appropriate size shaders to basecoat the structures. Use the appropriate size liners to pull wall lines. 3

5 Use the appropriate size shaders to wash over the shade side walls; corner load the angle to float shade on the opposite wall. Each numbered step will contain instructions to complete the structure. Roofs, windows, doors will be completed in a later step. Refer to line drawing for numbering. Structures #1 and #8 11. Warm White basecoat walls and chimney (on #1) Slate Grey pull wall lines; wash over right walls; float shade across top of left walls Structures #2 and #7 12. Camel basecoat walls and chimney (on #2) Milk Chocolate pull wall lines; wash over right wall on #7, float shading across top of left walls Structures #3 and # Country Blue basecoat walls and chimney (on #3) Uniform Blue pull wall lines, wash over right walls, float shading across top of the left walls Structure # Uniform Blue + Snow White 1:1 mixture basecoat walls and chimneys Uniform Blue pull wall lines; wash over right walls; float shading across top of lefts wall Structures #4 and #9 15. Snow White basecoat roofs Corner load the angle with Uniform Blue, lightly float shading across the top of each roof. Double load the 0 liner with Uniform Blue + Snow White, pull the side roof lines. Load the 0 liner with Snow White, re-stroke over the side roof lines; to brighten. Doors and Windows 22. With the appropriate size shaders, base coat Camel yellow windows Graphite dark windows and door Cool Neutral off white doors Milk Chocolate door Slate Grey grey doors Corner load the angle with Russet, float shading across the top of each Camel window. Corner load the angle with Milk Chocolate, float shading across the top of the doors on structure #9. With the 5/0 liner and Warm White, pull the window panes, outline the windows, doors and pull door knobs on structures #6, #9, #11 and #15; refer to photo with the 5/0 liner and Uniform Blue, pull the shutters on structure #6; refer to photo. Brush blend Milk Chocolate + Graphite on the 0 shader, pull the shutters on structure #15; refer to photo. Snowmen 23. Snow White basecoat snowmen Corner load the angle with Uniform Blue, lightly float shading down the left side of the snowman and the c stroke for the arm inset. Then corner load the angle with Camel, float a highlight tint down the right side of the snowman. Double load the 5/0 liner with Milk Chocolate + Camel, pull the twig arm. Brush blend Russet + Camel on the 5/0 liner, pull the carrot nose. Foreground Shrubs and Foliage With the sm Texture brush and Evergreen, dance in the foreground shrubs and foliage. Then with Snow White on the toe of the Texture brush, lightly and randomly dance on the snow. Randomly chisel float* Snow White under ground foliage and

7 structures, to brighten the snow areas. Window Tints 25. Corner load the angle with thinned Camel, chisel float* tint on the snow areas directly below the yellow windows. Distressing Shelf 26. To achieve the distressing areas over the shelf, randomly rub the white candle over areas of the shelf where you want the color below to show through. Note the backside of the shelf is not distressed. Make sure you wipe away any loose wax with a clean, dry cloth before applying the top coat. Areas coated with the wax will allow the top coat to be easily removed. Now basecoat over the shelf with Everlasting Chalky Paint; using the 2 angle brush. Allow to dry. Lightly sand over the shelf areas where the candle was applied, allowing the bottom color to show through. Wipe off with a lint-free cloth. Finishing: 27. To protect finished painted pieces, varnish the insert with the DuraClear Matte Varnish; and the shelf with Americana Décor Ultra Matte Varnish using the 1 Langnickel Combo brush. Finishing Touch: 27. Glue the (Optional) drawer knobs into place with the Glass, Metal & More Permanent Glue. 6
