ART TABLE Page 2
Hardware Detail This table uses some great shortcuts to make building fast and fun! Satin ribbon covers the rough plywood edges of the table top. Double-rod drapery hardware holds the paper roll. And the legs screw into triangular top plates, both available in the trim aisle at Lowe s. Page 3
TOOLS Handsaw Clamp Drill drill bit - 1/8 inch driver bit to fit screws Scissors Tape measure Pencil Jobs for kids and adults together Adult-only jobs Page 4
SUPPLIES Plywood One sheet of plywood (available pre-cut at Lowe s in the lumber aisle) measuring ¾-inch x 24-inches x 48- inches [1.905 cm x cm x cm] Table legs Parson s style table legs with pre-installed mounting bolts (they come pre-cut at 1-½-inches x 1-½-inches x 36-inches [3.81 cm x 3.81 cm x cm]). Trim the legs to 28-inches [71cm] so the table is the right height for kids Moulding One piece of flat moulding measuring 1-¼-inches wide x ¼-inch thick x 48-inches long [3.175 cm wide x cm thick x cm long] Cut it into two pieces 24-inches long [60.96 cm] Hardwood dowel One 24-inch [60.96cm] piece of 3/4-inch diameter [1,905cm] hardwood dowel to fit drapery hardware. Plastic 3-drawer set 14-inches deep x 10-¼-inches wide x 11-inches tall [35.56 cm deep x cm wide x cm tall] Washers 4 - ¼-inch [0.635 cm] washers to act as spacers under the paper guides Water based stain Weldbond glue for edge banding Painter s tape Vinyl gloves Rags for clean-up and staining grit sand paper or sanding sponge 18 wide [45.72 cm] drawing paper roll from an art supplies store Ribbon ¾-inch wide [1.905 cm] x 12-feet [ cm] long (minimum) Screws 4 - #6 x ¾-inch [1.905 cm] pan-head sheet metal screws for attaching paper guides 4 - #8 x ½-inch [1.27 cm] pan-head sheet metal screws for attaching the plastic drawers Page 5
Let there be art! If you've got a budding artist in your family, this easy-to-build table offers an endless supply of paper, built in drawers to organize supplies, and a great design that converts easily to a study desk when needed! TIP The key to speedy construction is using four Parson's table legs, available at Lowe's in the moulding and trim aisle. These legs have a pre-installed bolt that makes installation almost instant. 1. Cut First, use a Japanese style pull saw to shorten the table legs to 28 inches [71 cm] to make the table a comfortable height for kids. 2. Stain Next, dip a rag into a can of water-based wood stain and rub a thin coat onto the legs in the direction of the wood grain. Allow the legs to dry - it won't take long at all! Page 6
3. Sand Once the legs dry they'll feel kind of prickly because the moisture in the stain has raised the grain. Smooth them down with a light sanding. TIP Cut out a cardboard template 1-¼ x 1-¼ [3.175 cm x cm] in the shape of a right angle. Using this template will eliminate measuring for the hardware position at each corner. 4. Drill At the first corner, use your template to align the top plate hardware. Then drill 3/32 [0.238 cm] pilot holes the depth of the supplied screws. To help you avoid drilling too deep, place a piece of masking tape on the drill bit to mark the correct depth. 5. Fasten Install screws in the top plate. Pressing the drill s trigger in short bursts allows a beginner to control speed and direction better. Finish installing the top plate hardware at all four corners. Page 7
6. Install legs Now install the parson's table legs by screwing each leg into position till it's nice and snug. 7. Mark Position the drapery hardware about 2-½ [6.35 cm] away from the tabletop and use a pencil to trace the inside of the screw holes. 8. Drill Drill a 1/8 [0.317 cm] diameter hole in each pencil mark. Drill just a tiny bit deeper than the depth of the provided screws. 9. Fasten Attach the hardware with the provided screws. Use a long driver bit so that the nose of the drill doesn't get stuck on the drapery hardware. If you don't have a long drill bit, just use a hand screwdriver. Page 8
10. Same thing on the other leg Now measure, mark and fasten the second piece of drapery hardware on the opposite leg. 11. Add rod and paper Next, cut to length and install the hardwood doweling through the openings in the drapery hardware and add a roll of paper. 12. Lock Tighten the set screws against the dowel to secure the rod in position. 13. Drill Now we'll add some drawers from the home organization aisle at Lowe's. Using a 3/32-inch [0.238 cm] bit, drill four ½-inch-deep holes [1.27 cm] through the top of the empty drawer unit and into the plywood. Keep the holes shallow - you don't want to drill all the way through the plywood! 9
14. Fasten Install four 1/2-inch [1.27 cm] pan-head sheet metal screws to hold the drawers unit in place. 15. Install drawers Put all of the drawers into position in the frame. TIP The table is almost done but the edge of the plywood is kind of rough and has printing stamped on it, so we're going to fix it up with a process called edge-banding. This step is optional but it will make your table look fantastic. 16. Tape edges Before gluing on the edge banding, tape the top edge of the table to protect it from gluey fingerprints. Page 10
17. Rip To get a clean edge when you end a line of tape, use a putty knife as a guide so the tape tears in a nice straight line. 18. Glue To cover the ugly plywood edge, we first apply a layer of white glue, rubbing it into the grain of the plywood with a gloved fingertip to create a smooth bed of glue. 19. Edge band Now use satin ribbon in your favourite colour to edge-band the plywood, pressing it firmly into the glue. 20. Snip and snug After you've applied the ribbon, snip it off and glue it down over the spot where you started. Page 11
21. Un-tape Now remove the tape. 22. Cut To create guides for our paper roll, cut two pieces of flat moulding to 24 [60.96 cm]. 23. Drill Drill a 3/32-inch [0.238 cm] diameter pilot hole at both ends of the paper guide, allowing the bit to penetrate through the trim and travel a short distance into the table top. 24. Space Add a washer to hold the paper guide slightly off the table surface. This will leave enough room for the paper to move under the guide without snagging. Page 12
25. Fasten Drive a 3/4-inch [1.905 cm] pan-head sheet metal screw into the pilot hole. Repeat the process at the other end of the paper guide. 26. Repeat Add an identical paper guide to the opposite end of the table. 27. Try a rip Press down on the centre of the wooden paper guide and practice ripping the paper till you're able to get a nice clean edge. Do art! Page 13
