4 LANGUAGE ARTS (Myths, Legends, Storytelling), Field Guides offer a wonderful format for writing about various creatures. You approach the writing as a scientist learning about a creature. You just have to be imaginative since the creatures you are writing about are imaginary. Field Guides are books designed to provide scientific and general observations about different things such as animals, weather, plants, insects and more. In general they focus on things found outside. The purpose of the Field Guide is to focus on an imaginary creature described from history or from a culture. There are numerous mythical creatures such as dragons, unicorns, elves, fairies and many, many more you may use in your field guide. MYTHICAL CREATURES A brief history TRY THIS... Almost every culture has its mysterious beasties. Research the different creatures from different cultures. Make a field guide for each creature or feature one creature per page. 5 LANGUAGE ARTS (Myths, Legends, Storytelling), Some mythical creatures are found in several cultures. For example, dragons are mentioned in both eastern and western stories. The difference is dragons in the east are regarded as good while the ones in the west are consider bad. Have you ever wondered why? The Field Guide is designed to capture information recorded in folklore, and to allow the creator to add their own imaginative ideas. There are no rules for this project. Of course, the more research into the history of the mythical creature the better your completed project. We have provided a few suggestions to add interest to the printed pages and sample page layouts. Real nature field guides are used to identify something from nature. They include illustrations, scientific information and observations. They reveal information about the object in focus that helps with identification of the creature. For example, the field guide will describe the creature s coloring, the sounds it makes, its mating rituals and much more. The Creature Field Guide should include not only scientific information such as the creatures habitat, its physical appearance and what it likes to eat, but also interesting details such as how one might capture and tame the creature or its special abilities such as flying, giving wishes or protection. THINK ABOUT THIS Even in contemporary society, we have our mythological creatures - we call them aliens. LANGUAGE ARTS (Myths, Legends, Storytelling), 2

6 LANGUAGE ARTS (Myths, Legends, Storytelling), SETTING THE STAGE: There are some general guidelines involved in creating the printed page layouts & slides. Although the field guide is simple, it requires some thought as to what and where certain elements (written descriptions, graphics, & embellishments) will be placed on a page. Imagine you are working for a natural history museum and have been assigned the task of creating a Creature Field Guide for a creature of your choice. You will be preparing a printed and an interactive PowerPoint Field Guide of your creature. On pages are sample layout pages with suggestions for content that can be used to help you create a page layout. The field guide is designed to tell both a visual and informative story. As the viewer turns the pages of the book, it should capture their attention and draw them even more into the field guide even more. It is a treasure that enlightens as it is viewed.
