2 Explore the mythological areas activity Step 1: Travel to Yggdrasil Log into the multiplayer world. You teacher will teleport you Yggdrasil. In the Minecraft Viking world, Norse mythology is represented, including: Yggdrasil; the Bifröst rainbow bridge; and the home of a frost giant. 1

3 Step 2: Mythological snapshot Imagine you are a tourist/time traveller and explore the three mythological areas. Take at least 1 or 2 snapshots of each location. You will discuss your snapshots at the end of this step. Yggdrasil is the mythical tree that connects the nine worlds in Norse cosmology. 2

6 How to take a snapshot 1. Decide on the viewpoint for your photo: a. The default view in MinecraftEdu is first person. b. Press F5 to toggle the viewpoint to third person (behind). c. Press F5 again to view third person (in front). 2. Press F2 while in game to take a screenshot. To make the screenshots look more professional, you can remove the Heads-Up Display (HUD) and enter full screen mode before taking one. To do this, simply press F1 while in game to remove the HUD. To bring the HUD back press F1 again. 3. On pressing F2, MinecraftEdu saves the screenshot to a local folder. To find this folder, check these instructions: a. Press ESC to view the Game menu. b. Choose Options. c. Choose Resource packs. d. Choose Open resource pack folder. e. Click on Minecraft. f. Double-click on the screenshots folder. 4. Have a class discussion, relating the MinecraftEdu world snapshots to what the pupils know about Viking mythology. 5

7 Viking storyteller activity Step 1: Plan an animation Plan an animation based on a Viking theme or mythology with a specific audience in mind. You can use images from the Minecraft Viking world. Decide which snapshots you intend to animate. For inspiration look at this STEM in Minecraft animation: Odin creates the Viking world Make a storyboard to plan your animation. Include the script of any speech you want to use in your animation. Consider the sounds that you might use in the animation. Review your storyboard and script, considering your intended audience, and make any changes you think are necessary. 6

8 Step 2: Compose, record and edit Compose and record the snapshots that will make your animation. Record any sounds you need to include. You may include additional copyright free sounds from the C2K copyright free sounds app. Use a suitable software package, for example, Windows Movie Maker or imovie to import your images and sounds and produce a short animation. During the editing process decide which of your images and sounds are suitable and discard any unsuitable material. Select suitable transitions and effects to enhance your animation. Experiment with sequences. Layer the transitions, sounds, effects, titles and credits. Use appropriate timing when editing your animation. Review your film during the process and make on-going improvements. Save your work. Make sure that it is saved in a format that will enable it to be viewed on other computers. Step 3: Show and discuss In groups show your animation and discuss. 7

9 The Nidhogg activity Step 1: Preparing for battle Your teacher will teleport you to the long boat Viking village in the mountains. In these steps you will work as a team to battle one of the Viking s greatest myths: the Nidhogg! As a group prepare for the battle: Make armour and weapons to defend the village. Research the best tools and materials to defeat the Nidhogg (ingame an ender dragon), for example a diamond sword or amour, bow and arrows, enchantments and potions or creating a temporary base from the ender dragon, in a block the ender dragon cannot destroy. Collectively decide on a list of materials you will need. Collectively decide on tactics to defeat the creature! During the battle each pupil should take at least 1 or 2 snapshots. See step 2 for details of how to take a snap-shot in MinecraftEdu. 8

10 Step 2: Release the Nidhogg! Your teacher will release the Nidhogg. Once released, you cannot remove the dragon, so killing it is the only option. Remember to work as a team. Good luck! If a your avatar is killed in game, you should respawn and return to the battle until the Nidhogg is killed. When the battle is finished, write a story about the great battle with the mythological Nidhogg. 9
