1 Course: YEAR 10 ENGLISH Task Number: 5 Weight of Task: 25% Due Date of Task: 20 October, 2016 (Term 4, Week 2, Thursday) Nature of Task: Part A: Viewing Task and Documentation of Creative Process Part B: Create a 3-4 minute short film exploring an aspect of Society and the Individual (Script and Story Board must also be submitted) Limits: Part A: 750 words Part B: 3-4 minute film Other Information: Students are responsible for the submission of the task. They must allow time to upload and test their film on the school system. Outcomes Assessed: EN5-1A EN5-2 EN5-3B EN5-5C responds to and composes increasingly sophisticated and sustained texts for understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, imaginative expression and pleasure effectively uses and critically assesses a wide range of processes, skills, strategies and knowledge for responding to and composing a wide range of texts in different media and technologies selects and uses language forms, features and structures of texts appropriate to a range of purposes, audiences and contexts, describing and explaining their effects on meaning thinks imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically about information and increasingly complex ideas and arguments to respond to and compose texts in a range of contexts A successful assessment should document the creative processes undertaken create a film that makes deliberate use of at least 3 film or editing devices to create meaning say something about / explore the concept of society and the individual You will be assessed on your ability to Respond creatively by making a short film Express an understanding of Society and the Individual Explain how film elements are used to create meaning
2 This is a major work so you will need to complete it in stages. You MUST have your class teacher sign off each stage of the project. Stage One: Development of the Concept and Research i) Pitch the Project. ii) Complete Research and Identify 3 Methods of communicating the Project Stage Two: Scripting and Storyboarding iii) Script Submission iv) Story Board Submission Stage Three: Filming Stage Four: Reflection Statement
3 Part A: Documentation of the Creative Process Be inspired! View some of the short films listed below (click on the picture to take to the website) and see how others have engaged with the concept of Society and the Individual on film. What forms and devices have they used that you could try? 4 Stage One: Development of the Concept and Research i) Decide on what aspect of Society and the Individual you would like to explore. Determine the most appropriate: Form and genre Narrative arc Characters, settings, motifs etc At least 3 film / editing devices to explore your concept of Society and the Individual ii) Visit the following website to research film making. lessonbucket.com/category/filmmaking/ Stage Two: Script and Story Board your film Here are some resources to assist you: Story Boarding Script Layout Stage Three: Filming Compose a short film of 3-4 minutes that explores an aspect of Society and the Individual. You may select from any of the following Narrative drama, comedy, satire, western, speculative fiction, etc. Interview Animation - Lego, stop motion Documentary Poem You will need to submit your film electronically in MP4 format. You will up-load your film into the folders in Groups / Students / Year 10 /English / Your teacher s name. You must submit it by lunchtime on the day of the task. You should also have a copy on a USB.
5 Warning: It is your responsibility to upload the film and test that it works by the deadline. Penalties will apply if the task is late and technical issues will not be accepted as an excuse. Be organised. Stage Four: Write a report on your creative process. Make sure to include: an explanation of the idea/s you are exploring The purpose of your film (entertain, challenge, satires, persuade, inform etc) who your audience is and how you have targeted them Justify your choice of genre and devices. Your report should be approximately 750 words.

Effectively achieves its purpose within the time frame and is appropriate to context, audience and form. Satisfactorily applies and manipulates a range of film making and editing techniques to produce a film of good quality. Films demonstrate sound conceptual ideas and is constructed effectively. Achieves its purpose (may/may not be within time frame) and is appropriate to context, audience and form. Applies film making and editing techniques to produce a film of satisfactory quality. Films demonstrates basic conceptual ideas and is constructed satisfactorily. May not achieve its purpose (may be under/over time) and may not be appropriate to context, audience or form. Applies film making and editing techniques in a limited way to produce a film of basic quality. Films demonstrate limited conceptual ideas and its construction is limited.
