These 3 activities complement classroom work on the topic of Viking raids: Preparing for battle; Defence and attack; and The Emerald Challenge. Skills and Capabilities These activities offer opportunities for pupils to develop the following Cross-Curricular Skills, Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities: Being Creative Working with others Thinking, Problem Solving and Decision Making By working together to research design and create traps, armour, weaponry and status effects children should have the opportunity to: make ideas real by experimenting with different designs, actions, and outcomes. By working in their clan groups to complete and reflect on the Viking raid reenactment children should have the opportunity to: listen actively and share opinions; suggest ways of improving their approach to working collaboratively; and take personal responsibility for work with others and evaluate their own contribution to the group. By making plans for defence and attack and evaluating their success children should have the opportunity to: generate possible solutions, try out alternative approaches, and evaluate outcomes; examine options and weigh up pros and cons. Using ICT By taking snap shots of their activity work and discussing it, children should have the opportunity to: manage and present their stored work and showcase their learning across the curriculum, using ICT safely and responsibly. 0
Set multiplayer gamemode to survival New words and phrases Clan Respawning Fortify Defence Norse roles PvP Status effects Redstone You may find it useful to introduce pupils to new words and phrases. The amount of detail you use when explaining these terms will depend on the age and prior knowledge of the children. This document references this other CCEA Minecraft STEM resources: Minecraft Recipes resource document and videos. Teacher tool description Approximate times are given for each step throughout the resource. Save the multiplayer world Remember to save the multiplayer world from the server tool every 30 minutes. See page 5 of the Teacher tools resource. If you are sharing your STEM in Minecraft activities through social media remember to tweet it to #minecraft 1
Teacher tasks The steps in this resource area designed for survival multiplayer gamemode. In game open the Teacher menu by pressing m. In the World Settings tab choose Gamemode: Survival. Make sure Difficulty is set to Peaceful. Also lock the time to daylight hours by checking the time padlock. The steps in this resource area designed for survival multiplayer gamemode. Working in survival gamemode means in-game energy and food supplies will run out. Use this as an opportunity to encourage team work amongst the pupils as they work against the clock. If needed Teachers can use the give command to provide pupils with food. See the Teachers Tools document for more information. 2
Navigating the map Spawn area When pupils enter the map they will initially appear at the spawn area. Spawning happens when players log in and appear in the Minecraft world. The large beam of light shows the spawn area. Go through the X arch way to go to the small Viking Village. Using the hotbar The steps in this resource use survival mode. You will know that you are in survival mode by the health (hearts) and hunger (chicken legs) on the heads-up display bar. The nine squares are called the hotbar. This is where you store and select commonly-used items from your inventory. Take a moment to point out the hotbar to pupils. For more information on hunger management in Minecraft, visit Save the multiplayer world Remember to save the multiplayer world from the server tool every 30 minutes. See page 5 of the Teacher tools resource. 3
Preparing for battle activity In these steps pupils form two clans, name their village and make plans for the emerald challenge. Step 1: Preparing two clans Divide the class into two groups. Each group will become a clan. Ask pupils to: name their clan; and name their village. There are two villages. As a class, toss a coin to decide where each clan will reside. Village 1 Village 2 Ask pupils to gather at their clan s village and explore. If any pupils are finding it difficult to locate their village, go to that village and use the Teacher menu to teleport individual pupils to your location. See the Teachers Tool resource for more information on teleporting. 4
Step 2: The challenge Explain to the pupils that in the following steps you will provide them with a collection of emeralds. They will take part in the emerald challenge. Each clan must work in two teams: Half of the clan must defend their village. They stay there to protect their village and their collection of emeralds. The other half of the clan must travel to the opposing clan s village and raid it. They must bring back as many emeralds as possible. The raid will last for 20 minutes. Each clan should assign one member of the team to keep a tally of how many emeralds and clan members who have not re-spawned at the end of the raid. Clan members who are injured and/or killed will respawn at the Rathlin spawnpoint. They must stay there and investigate the island. They should not re-join the raid. Pupils should each take at least 1 or 2 snap shot pictures during the raid. See Quest 1 and 2 for details of how to take a snap-shot in Minecraft. Good luck! Step 3: Making a plan Ask pupils to create roles and tasks within their clan. Working together, pupils should decide how to divide the roles and tasks between defence and attack. Ask the pupils the following questions: How did the Vikings fortify their villages? How did they plan and implement attacks? What roles and tasks were important to these aspects of Viking life? Ask the pupils to imagine that they are a Viking and answer the following questions: How would you fortify your village in the game and protect your chests of emeralds? How would you attack the opposing clan s village in the game and steal as many emeralds as you could? What roles and tasks are needed in the game? How would you divide the tasks up? Pupils may find it useful to consider the Norse ranking system, including members across royalty, military and social structures. For example: Royalty roles High king and queen (the founders/stronghold of the clan) Jarl (head of council) Thane (royal advisor who keeps an eye on the military side and discusses matters with the royalties) Skald (members of council) 5
Military roles Hersir (the leading general chosen by the high king/queen or jarl) Radningar (strong warrior who can train others) Viking (fierce fighter) Social roles Villagers (members of the clan who do not take part in raids or wars but help maintain village life, for example woodcutters, builders, miners, blacksmiths, foragers, farmer and bakers) Viking sorcerer or sorceress Save the multiplayer world Remember to save the multiplayer world from the server tool every 30 minutes. See page 5 of the Teacher tools resource. Step 4: The emeralds Next, use the give command to give each clan 40 emeralds: 1. Using the Teacher menu, change your own mode to creative. Then use the freeze command to pause play. The freeze command is a useful in-game teacher tool. 2. Teleport or fly to the village. 3. Open your inventory and in the search area type Emeralds. Add 40 to your inventory. 4. Using the give command, give the 40 emeralds to the king or queen of the first clan. The king or queen must work with their clan, deciding where to store the emeralds (for example in chests). 5. Repeat steps 24 for the other clan. 6. Switch off creative mode from the Teacher menu. This will be a time bound challenge. Half of the clan must defend and half must attack. The defending members will stay at their clan village. The attacking members will travel to the other clan s village for the raid. The aim of the raid is to collect as many emeralds from the opposing clan as possible. The winning clan will have most remaining emeralds and Vikings at the end of the allocated time. Award points on the following basis: emerald = 1 point Viking who has not respawned = 1 point One member of each clan should keep a tally of remaining emeralds and Vikings who have not respawned. Save the multiplayer world Remember to save the multiplayer world from the server tool every 30 minutes. See page 5 of the Teacher tools resource. 6
Defence and attack activity In this step pupils create traps, weaponry, armour and status effects for use in the emerald challenge. Step 1: Traps, weaponry, armour and status effects Depending on what the pupils come up with in Step 2: Making and plan, you might find the following suggestions useful for in-game crafting and building: Traps Ask the pupils to consider the following traps: Think about how a water moat could be used as a trap. Think about ways to use height as an advantage. Encourage the pupils to look at the defensive walls of ancient Viking Hedeby. How might they apply this approach in the game? Use the element of surprise by laying ambushes in the woods or building simple pitfall traps. Avoid TNT traps as they can burn down the nearby wooden buildings. Take a look at this tutorial: Building a Redstone drawbridge and moat this is a detailed build. It is suitable for pupils who have previously used Redstone circuits in Minecraft. The addition of water makes it a little more complex. Consider assigning this as a small group task, with one or two digital prefects who can help and assist other pupils in the group. Ask pupils to take a series of photos (snapshots) from their crafting activities and talk about their designs. See Quest 1 and 2 for details of how to take a snap-shot in Minecraft. Save the multiplayer world Remember to save the multiplayer world from the server tool every 30 minutes. See page 5 of the Teacher tools resource. 7
Weaponry Ask pupils to create weapons such as swords, bows and arrows. Give pupils time to work out what materials they will need to find, and time to source them in the game. The CCEA recipes resource gives you information on creating swords and axes. For more information about mining cobblestone in the Viking Minecraft world, see Quest 1 Viking Roles. Alternatively, teachers can use the give command to give cobblestone to pupils. See the Teacher tools resource for more information about the give command. If time is limited, you may also decide to give pupils sticks and also readymade weapons. See the recipes resources for more information about crafting swords and axes. Ask pupils to create chests to store the weapons in their clan village. 8
Armour Armour is used to protect you during battle. A full set of armour includes: a helmet/cap; chest-plate/tunic; leggings/pants; and boots and shield. You can craft armour from leather, iron, gold or diamond. Pupils may wish to add colour to their leather armour by dying it. They can also add powers to their armour to make enchanted helmets, caps, chest-plates, leggings, pants or boots. Ask pupils to decide on which pieces of amour they would like to craft. See the recipes resources for more information about crafting armour. Learn how to craft armour by visiting Ask pupils to take a series of photos (snapshots) from their crafting activities and talk about their designs. See Quest 1 and 2 for details of how to take a snap-shot in Minecraft. Save the multiplayer world Remember to save the multiplayer world from the server tool every 30 minutes. See page 5 of the Teacher tools resource. 9
Status effects Players can be given effects that will change their condition/status in MinecraftEdu. Status effects can be helpful or harmful. Effects are added to potions, splash potions, lingering potions and tipped arrows. They can also be used via in-game commands. Allow each clan time to make at least two status effects one to strengthen their own clan, and one to weaken the opposing clan. Learn more about status effects at A status effect lasts for a specific length of time. While it is active, a special icon will appear on the screen. Once the effect wears off, the icon will disappear and you (or your opponent) will be back to normal. Ask all pupils to teleport back to their village and store any items in chests. 10
Teacher tasks PvP and respawning Before beginning the raid follow these steps: From the Teacher menu choose Player Settings and switch on Enable PvP. This means players can engage in combat and injure one another. Switch off Allow Student Respawning. 11
Teacher tasks Save the Viking world as pre_raid Warning: There will be damage to the MinecraftEdu world during the raid. You must save the MinecraftEdu world in the server tool. You must save it with a title that tells you that it is pre-raid, for example viking_world_pre_raid. From the server tool, change the World name to Viking_World_pre_raid. Choose Save world. MinecraftEdu indicates that the save was successful. Choose OK. This means that all the work pupils have done to date is saved, including their fortifications and preparations. Should you wish to, you can reload this version of the world after the raid. 12
Teacher tasks Save the world as the_raid Warning: There will be damage to the MinecraftEdu world during the raid. You must save the MinecraftEdu world in the server tool. You must save the world with a title that indicates the particular stage of the raid, for example the_raid. 1. From the server tool change the World name to the_raid. 2. Choose Save world. 3. MinecraftEdu states that the save was successful. Choose OK. This isolates the raid to one saved version. This is very important parts of the village may be damaged during the raid, so if you wish to return to the village pre-raid, you can simply load that saved version. 13
Teacher tasks Set teacher mode to creative Teachers should be in Creative Mode (Self) so that they can fly anywhere in the world, and give items to learners or teleport pupils if they need help. 14
Teacher tasks Temporarily changing the spawnpoint The current spawnpoint is just beyond the small Viking village. Before the raid, you must change the spawnpoint to Rathlin Island, to keep pupils who have been killed out of the remaining raid. To temporarily reset the position of spawnpoint: 1. Open the chat window by pressing t and type this command: /tp This will teleport you to Rathlin Island. 2. Open the chat window again by pressing t. 3. In the chat window, type the command to set the spawnpoint of all pupils to your current location by typing and pressing the return key. Save the multiplayer world Remember to save the multiplayer world from the server tool every 30 minutes. See page 5 of the Teacher tools resource. 15
The emerald challenge In these steps pupils take part in the emerald challenge. Step 1: Rules of the raid Ask all pupils to return to their village and get ready for the raid. Teachers can teleport to each village and teleport any remaining pupils to their location. Allow 5 minutes for preparation. Freeze game play Next, using the Teacher tools, freeze the pupils in the game and draw attention of the rules of the raid. Discuss and agree on the rules of the raid as a class. Ask pupils what other items they would add: Rules of the raid During the raid: Discussion at your desk and in game must be polite and respectful 16
Step 2: Begin!! To begin the event, unfreeze the pupils. It may go quiet while the attacking raiders make their way to the opposing villages. Teachers should be in creative mode so that they can fly anywhere in the MinecraftEdu world to assist pupils. The winning team or clan will be the one with the most remaining emeralds and clan members at the end of the allocated time. Award points on the following basis: Emerald = 1 point Viking who has not respawned = 1 point Step 3: Time s up! Once the time is up: take a tally of results; Announce the wining clan. Discuss the raid with the class: What methods did the pupils employ? What was successful? What proved a challenge? What would they do differently? As the class review the snap shots from the raid. Time permitting ask pupils to create a short written article about the raid using the snap shots as illustrations. Save the multiplayer world Remember to save the multiplayer world from the server tool every 30 minutes. See page 5 of the Teacher tools resource. 17
Teacher tasks Save the MinecraftEdu world Before proceeding, save the MinecraftEdu world again making sure it is the_raid version. Extending the raid activity If you have time, ask pupils to document their raid in a Minecraft book. When they have done this, ask them to add their books to a chest in a communal area of their village. They could use other topics for the books, such as the life and ritual tools of a Viking sorcerer or sorceress. You may wish to return to the pre-raid saved version of the MinecraftEdu world (depending on the amount of damage incurred in the raid). Creating a book and quill Learn more about creating a book or quill by visiting and Teachers may wish to use the give command for required materials. Using a scoreboard Rather than taking a manual tally during the raid, teachers can use a count of in-game statistics using the Scoreboard command in MinecraftEdu. Consider assigning this task to pupils, possibly lead by digital prefects within the class. Allow at least 60 minutes for pupils to investigate the command, set up teams in MinecraftEdu and add objectives and statistics. Find out more about the scoreboard command at See an example of the scoreboard command and the statistics in Minecraft that can be reported on. 18
Teacher tasks Save the MinecraftEdu world after the raid It is important that you now save the MinecraftEdu world with a different descriptive title, for example post_raid. Choose Save world. You now have two versions of the MinecraftEdu world before and after the raid. This means that all the work pupils have done to date is saved, including their fortifications and preparations. Switch off Enable PvP and check Allow Student Respawning. Switch off Creative Mode (Self). 19
Teacher tasks Reverting the spawnpoint Before the raid we temporarily set the spawnpoint to Rathlin Island, to keep pupils who have been killed out of the remaining raid. To reset the spawnpoint to its original position beyond the small Viking village: 1. Open the chat window by pressing t and type this command: /tp to teleport to the area beyond the small Viking village. 2. In the chat window, type the command to set the spawnpoint of all pupils to your current location. Save the world from the server tool remember to change the name! Save the multiplayer world Remember to save the multiplayer world from the server tool every 30 minutes. See page 5 of the Teacher tools resource. 20
Teacher tasks If you want to do the raid again or follow the raid steps with another class you can load a previously saved version of the MinecraftEdu world. In the server tool: Choose Stop Server. Choose Return to Server Launcher. Pupils will see this screen, noting that the server is closed. 21
In the server tool, choose Select Saved World. Choose the version you wish to return to, for example Viking_World_pre_raid. Choose Start Server with Selected Saved World. The server launcher is now running indicated by the green Server ready icon: Pupils will still see a Server closed message. Ask pupils to choose Back to title screen. Choose Multiplayer. Choose Minecraft Server. Choose Join server and connect. Choose Back to game. Pupils can now see the selected saved version of the MinecraftEdu world. 22
