1 Registration For NWBW Mary Irvine Basket Day July 14, 2018 Saturday 9:00-5:30 Maplewood Rock and Gem Club Building th St SW, Edmonds, WA Join us for Basket Day! The Guild pays the instructors fees and you pay for only the materials. Early registration until May 26th for this event is open only to Northwest Basket Weavers Guild members and their guests. After that date registration will be open to the general public. Registration is due by June 18 th. Classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Please indicate your first, second, and third choice. Include the materials fee of your first choice only, as a deposit with your registration. Any balance will be paid by each student directly to the instructor on class day. Cancellation Policy: Your materials fee deposit will be refunded if you cancel prior to June 22nd. After June 22nd, there will be a refund only if your place can be filled from the waiting list or if you find a replacement student for the class. If you don t want to take a class or can t spend all day, there will be space for open weaving, visiting, and sharing techniques. If you are stuck on a project, bring it along for help. There are usually experienced weavers available to help you. You can also just come for the potluck lunch or drop by anytime to check out what s happening and visit with other Guild members. There will be an hour lunch break between 12:00 to 1:30 depending on the class. Please bring a potluck dish to share for lunch, your preferred beverage, and snacks to share if you wish. Coffee, tea, and bottled water will be provided. The Guild will have merchandise, including tools and waxed linen, for sale - please bring cash or check book! 2 All Day Classes Large Banded Bowl Class One 9:00 am 5:30 pm Instructor: Sheila Wray 7.5 hours All Levels Description: This is woven of rattan (reed), natural and dyed, from a slotted wooden base. It is a great beginner basket that is attractive and useful. Tools: Basic Basketry Tools - Scissors or shears, needle nose pliers, tape measure, awl (short, packing tool), clips or clothes pins, knife, pencil, spray bottle, towel, dishpan or bucket for soaking materials Size: 8 diameter X 4 deep Materials fee: $25.00 Class Two 9:00 pm 5:30 pm Porcupine Quill on Birch Bark Medallion Instructor: Kathy Ervin 7.5 hours All Levels Description: There will be a variety of designs to choose from floral or geometric. Quills, natural white or dyed in an array of colors will be worked onto birch bark discs. Beads will be included and instruction given for their application. Also included at the beginning is the making of a leather finger guard. Tools: Embroidery size scissors, hemostat or tweezers, small sharp awl, (optional) thimble Approx. Size: 2.5 Diameter Materials Fee: $50.00
3 Class Three 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Moose Hair Tufting Instructor: Kay Harradine 7 hours All Levels Description: Moose hair tufting is an amazing embroidery technique from the far north which takes advantage of the hollow hairs of large mammals living in very cold climates. For this project you may make a small drawn up pouch, or pin and earrings, from buckskin or suede. Then decorate with moose, elk or caribou hair while learning how to tuft. Simple beadwork edging provides a nice finish. Findings included for pouch and jewelry. Beading may need to be finished at home. Size: 3 x 3 Tools: small sharp scissors or Fiskars snips Materials Fee: $40.00 Class Four 9:00 am 5:00 pm Six-Pack Tool Tote Instructor: Carolyn Snedigar 7 hours All Levels Description: This basket starts out with a 5 x10 pine wood base then basic weaving is used in weaving this tote, shaping to accommodate the wood insert dividers for this 6 compartment tool tote. A square top swing handle is inserted for easy carrying. Wood base and insert are Pine, Ash handle insert and flat, round and flat oval reed for weaving. Approx. Size: 6.5 X 12 X 5 tall Tools: Basket shears, awl, a packing tool and clips and please make sure you have them marked with your initials. I will have all tools available in class for those who need them. Materials Fee: $45.00
4 Class 5 9:00 am 4:00 pm The Peacock Stitch Instructor: David Chambers 6 hrs. Intermediate (Must have coiled at least 3 things) Description: We will learn/practice the peacock stitch by coiling pine needles around a wooden center to make a coaster. We will coil with a gauge emphasizing stitch placement and neatness in order to create beautiful stitch patterns. Tools: Sharp scissors, and a thimble could be helpful Approx. size: 4 diameter Materials Fee: $20.00 Half Day Classes Class 6 9:00 am 1:00 pm Beginning Gourd Pine Needle Decoration Instructor: Len Sherrard 4 hrs. All Levels Description: Using a cleaned gourd bowl shaped and using alcohol ink to color, it is decorated with Irish linen and glycerin pine needles. Tools: None needed Approx. size: varies Materials Fee: $45.00
