1 Embroidery Series General Class Information *A stabilizer sampler pack is available that contains all stabilizers and specialty products needed to complete this series. This pack is $25 and can be purchased at DSC during your first session. If you wish to purchase a stabilizer pack, please pre-order one at DSC prior to the first class so that we can be sure to have enough of them prepared. If you are in a hands-on seat and choose not to order the stabilizer pack, you must still use the stabilizers that are listed in the supply lists. Any substitutions must be approved by the instructor prior to the class. **Reminder: This series is about how to embroider specific items and how to do specific embroidery techniques. This is not a how-to-use your embroidery machine class. You should already know how to: load embroidery designs onto your machine determine the size of the design determine how many stitches and color changes the design includes move the design around in the hoop combine and edit designs, if desired If you need a refresher on how to use your machine, you can retake the introductory class as many times as desired if you purchased your machine at Dublin Sewing Center. If you did not purchase your machine at Dublin Sewing Center, you can take the class for a fee. Trusted Online Embroidery Sites: Embroidery Library - Dakota Collectibles - (also available on CD at DSC) OESD - Viking/Pfaff Embroidery Designs - Secrets Of Embroidery - Embroidery Billboard - Moose B Stitchin' - (specializes in In-the-hoop projects) Criswell Embroidery - (specializes in free-standing lace) More sites will be shared during the Specialty Techniques Lecture/Demo in Session 6. 2 Supply List for Lecture Only Students: General Supplies Needed for Every Session: Floriani Stabilizer Workbook. Download and print here: Floriani Quick Reference. Download and print here: A printed copy of this document (all 5 pages) Paper and pencil for taking notes Embroidery Series Supply List 2 of 5 Last Modified 5/24/12
3 Supply List for Hands-On Students: Supply Notes: 1. Please remember that you are attending this series to learn and practice. Purchase your items accordingly. Goodwill and the dollar store are your friends! 2. Not all embroidery designs work for all projects, so bring several to each session. At the end of each session, we will discuss the items and designs needed for the next session. Even though we have recommended various design sites above, most machines come with built-in designs that will work for the techniques featured in this series. General Supplies Needed for Every Session: Floriani Stabilizer Workbook. Download and print here: Floriani Quick Reference. Download and print here: A printed copy of this document (all 5 pages) Paper and pencil for taking notes Embroidery machine in good working order with manual, embroidery unit, feet and all accessories needed for embroidery ü Embroidery hoop (NO LARGER THAN 5 x 7 ) ü **Embroidery design loaded onto a usb stick, floppy disk or embroidery card for your machine. The design needs to be smaller than 100mm x100mm or 4 x 4 and have no more than 4 color changes. Designs that are larger or have more color changes take too long to embroider for the class time that we have. If using built-in embroidery designs, bring the book of designs that came with the machine (if there was one). ü Templates of your embroidery designs. This can be one of the following: 1. A printed template is sometimes included in the.pdf of instructions or in a booklet, if there is one. Print or copy the template pages onto paper or Template Tearaway. -or- 2. If you have software that will print a template, print a template onto paper or Template Tearaway. -or- 3. If you do not have software that will print a template, embroider the design onto scrap fabric and mark the horizontal and vertical centers of the design prior to removing it from the hoop. If your hoop has vertical and horizontal center marks, use those to mark the embroidered fabric. If your hoop does not, use the plastic placement templates to find and mark the centers. Embroidery thread in colors needed for chosen design ü Embroidery bobbins (pre-wound or wind yourself using embroidery bobbin thread) ü *Embroidery Stabilizers as outlined for each session below ü Size 75 and 90 Embroidery needles ü Curved embroidery scissors for trimming threads ü Temporary fabric marker (blue wash-away, purple fade-away, chalk, etc.) ü Tweezers ü Pins, long and short ü Transparent tape or painter's tape Additional supplies indicated for each session below ü indicates items that are available at Dublin Sewing Center Embroidery Series Supply List 3 of 5 Last Modified 5/24/12
4 Additional Supplies Needed for Each Session: Session 1: T-Shirts & Towels Techniques: Embroidering knits and terry cloth, stabilizing and hooping difficult areas. T-Shirt T-Shirt - any size, pre-washed 2-4 medium size jaw style hair clips (approx. 2" long) See picture to the right. 1 sheet of Template Tearaway* (optional) ü Fusible No-Show mesh stabilizer* ü Tear-away Medium stabilizer* (only needed if your design for the t-shirt contains more than 12,000 stitches) ü Wet-N-Gone Tacky stabilizer* (only needed if your t-shirt is too small to fit into the hoop) ü Dream Weave Fusible* interfacing ü Size 80 Ball-Point needles ü Towel Terry Cloth Towel - any size, pre-washed Heat-N-Gone topping* ü Stitch-n-Wash stabilizer* ü Embroidery design note: Embroidery designs containing line art or skinny areas (less than 1/4" wide) are not recommended. Redwork embroidery on Flour Sack towels will be discussed during class, but will not be stitched out. Session 2: Cutwork & Applique Techniques: Cutwork, Applique, Design Placement. Cutwork: Linen, linen-blend or light-to-medium weight cotton fabric Cutwork embroidery designs of your choice. ü Applique or lace trimming scissors (small tips, not duck-billed) ü Wet-N-Gone stabilizer* ü Dishcloth with Built-In Scrubber (An Exercise in Applique) Waffle-weave or micro-fiber dishcloth Heavyweight nylon netting scrubber fabric (like tulle, but heavier and with large holes), 8 rectangles that are at least 1" larger than your embroidery design in each direction. Wet-N-Gone stabilizer* ü Water-soluble topping* ü KK2000 temporary spray adhesive* ü Embroidery design note: This project requires an Applique embroidery design. ü The embroidery design for the dishcloth should be an applique design with a large fabric area and little to no stitching within the design. Embroidery Library has several designs appropriate for this project that are just $1. You can find these designs in the Applique category under Food. There is an apple that measures 3.18" x 3.5", a banana that measures 3.52" x 2.24", a grape cluster that measures 2.57" x 3.52", a pear that measures 2.61" x 3.53" and a pumpkin that measures 3.52" x 3.5". Dublin Sewing Center also has a Dakota Collectibles design disk meant for Scrubbies. ü Embroidery Series Supply List 4 of 5 Last Modified 5/24/12
5 Session 3: Jeans and Button-Front Shirt Techniques: Embroidering denim, stabilizing and hooping hard-to-hoop areas. Jeans Pair of Jeans, pre-washed, that do not have a flat-felled seam on the inside of the legs. A flat-felled seam is a thick seam with two rows of thread running down it. The seams on the inside of the legs need to be regular seams. The outside seams do not matter. ü Wet-N-Stick Tearaway or Perfect Stick stabilizer* ü Sharp Seam Ripper ü Button-Front Shirt Button-Front Shirt, pre-washed Heat-N-Sta fusible tear-away stabilizer* ü Wet-N-Stick Tearaway or Perfect Stick stabilizer* (only needed if embroidering an area that is hard to hoop, such as the collar or cuffs) ü Session 4: Bed Linens and Fleece Blankets Techniques: Embroidery on fleece, embroidering endless or continuous designs with or without an endless or continuous hoop. Bed Linens Pillowcase, pre-washed Wet-N-Gone Tacky stabilizer* ü Sharp Seam Ripper ü Fleece Blanket Fleece blanket, pre-washed Stitch-N-Wash stabilizer* ü Water soluble topping* ü Embroidery design note: Embroidery designs containing line art or skinny areas (less than 1/4" wide) are not recommended. Session 5: Quilted Items, Organza and Patches Techniques: Embroidering quilted items, alternate ways of dealing with very dense designs, creating embroidery that looks good on both sides. Quilted Items Quilt "sandwich" (two pieces of quilter's cotton and one piece of batting) Embroidery design note: Quilting designs are meant to replicate hand quilting. They are line-art only, no filled areas. Organza Patch (to be used as an alternate to directly embroidering dense designs on lightweight fabric) Organza (to be used as a base for a patch) Wet-N-Gone Tacky stabilizer ü Embroidery design note: This should be a very dense design with very little to no space within the design. Organza Suncatcher Organza (to be embroidered and seen from both sides) Wet-N-Gone Tacky stabilizer ü Empty bobbin for each color used in the embroidery. The bobbin will need to be filled with the same embroidery thread that's used on top so a one-color design is recommended. ü Patches made with a canvas base will be discussed during class, but not stitched. Session 6: Free-Standing Lace, In-The-Hoop Projects and Specialty Techniques This session is lecture/demo for all students. Bring paper and pen for taking notes.
