1 Fourth Annual Willowe's Weaving Seminar August , 2009 Hancock County Fairgrounds Greenfield Indiana Willowe s Basketry is pleased to be hosting our fourth annual weaving seminar at the Hancock Country Fairgrounds in Greenfield, Indiana. The seminar will feature basket weaving, seat weaving and jewelry classes, using a variety of materials and techniques.

2 Classes Friday 5 pm 9 pm Saturday 9 am 6 pm Sunday 9 am 6 pm General Information Vending Teachers will be vending throughout the weekend Silent Auction Weaving Levels Please note the weaving level guides for each class. What to Bring Attendees should bring weaving tools and bucket. Any special tools will be listed in class description. Sat & Sun Coffee, tea and water and snacks will be provided during the day. A light breakfast will be served in morning. At noon we will break for lunch. Location Greenfield is 30 minutes east from downtown Indianapolis on I 70 (exit 104). A map will be provided with directions to lodging, fairgrounds and shop with class conformation. 2

3 Registration Information Registration The fee for the three day event is $ Material fees are not included in the registration fee. Classes will be assigned on a first come first served basis. Deadline for registration is June 15, Registrants will be notified by July 1, 2009 of your class assignments. Material fees are due by July 15, Cancellation of classes will be accepted until July 15, Return of registration fee minus $10 handling fee can be made until July 15 Registration not refundable after July 15. Food Lunch will be included in your registration fee for Saturday and Sunday as well as a light breakfast. Coffee, tea, bottled water and snacks will be provided. Lodging Attendees will need to make their own lodging reservations. The following motels are within 5 miles of the Hancock County Fairgrounds. Quality Inn Comfort Inn Holiday Inn Express Super 8 Motel Hampton Inn Restaurants There are a variety of eating places that in include fast food, buffet and sit down options located near the motels mentioned above. 3

4 Classes Friday, August 14 The Perfect Sink Stool Tom Holtkamp All Levels Class $65.00 TH1A This is the perfect sink stool for children who aren't tall enough to reach the sink. It is woven using 1/2 inch flat and flat oval reed. It is the traditional herringbone splint weave pattern. It is easy and the results are fantastic. Child's Rocker in Shaker Tape Tom Holtkamp Class $75.00 All Levels TH1B This is a great gift for a new baby. It is small enough for a small baby and yet large enough for a toddler. Children love it. It is woven using Shaker Tape in a choice of colors. The pattern is traditional checker board. Stackin Hills and Valleys Gail Hutchinson Intermediate Class $51.00 Kit $39.00 GH1A Learn stack weaving, three rod-wale with a step-up, increasing and decreasing. Learn three rod-wale with a step-up, over lays, 1-2 twill, and French randing. Great little gift giving basket. Dimensions: 9 x 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 Gemstone Bracelet Susan Twombly All Levels Class $50.00/Silver $55.00/Gold-filled ST1 4 students only for this class Class members will learn the properties of precious metal wire, the basic skills of wire wrapping, how to incorporate beads, how to size bracelets, and to create the clasp. There will be a variety of Gemstone colors to choose from as well as Swarovski crystals. Each person will create their own color combination. Each student will leave with a beautifully designed and completed bracelet that will bring pleasure to you and dazzle your friends when they learn that you made it yourself! 5 Classes Friday, August 14 Pillar Candleholder Karen Griffith All Levels Class $24.00 Kit $22.00 KG1A Weave this pillar candleholder over a permanent glass mold with an attached wood base. The weaving includes flat oval spokes and caning. A beautiful and useable piece. Dimensions: 5" Diameter x 6 3/4" High Basketweaver s Clock Karen Griffith All Levels (2 Hours) Class $28.00 Kit $28.00 KG1B This is a must for every weaver's workspace. A Gretchen weave hugs the predrilled, stained and sealed base. The clock face is embellished with stoneware baskets. Clockworks are included. Dimensions: 8" Diameter Lidded Pine Needle Pam Talsky Beginner/Intermediate Class $40.00 PT1A Start with a knotted pine needle basket and learn to fit a lid. Some pine needle experience is helpful, but not required. Learn the joy and art of coiling with specially prepared pine needles to create this lovely little treasure keeper. Beginners may wish to start with a wood base, rather than a knotted start, to ensure they finish in class. Dimensions: 3" diameter x 1 3/4" high Special Tools: Bring a good small sewing scissors. Good lighting is required, so an Ott light may be helpful. The rest will be provided Materials and Patterns available Little Show Off Pam Talsky All Levels Class $50.00 PT1B This is an Alaskan cedar burl and pine needle dish. Learn the joy and art of coiling with specially prepared pine needles to create a lovely dish with a handle woven in. This is one little pine needle dish you can finish in quick time and show off to all your friends. Then use it to show off your business cards, jewelry, candy, or??? Dimensions: 4 1/2" L x 3 1/4" W x 1 1/2" H Special Tools: Bring a good small sewing scissors. Good lighting is required, so an Ott light may be Coiling on a Gourd Susan Billingsley All Levels Class $55.00 Kit $45.00 SB1 Learn coiling on a gourd using round reed and was linen. Begin with a pre-dyed, cut, and sealed gourd and coil with number 1 round reed. Embellish with beads. Fun and relaxing. Dimensions: 7" x 8 5

6 Classes Saturday, August 15 Seven Step Bench with Shelf Tom Holtkamp All Levels Class $80.00 Kits: $70.00 TH2A Saturday August 15 9AM - 6 PM A seven - step bench! This is the perfect bench for anywhere you need to sit and relax. The shelf below is perfect for newspapers or magazines. This is traditional seven - step caning. It is woven using narrow binder cane. This is the pattern that everyone refers to as "caning" Dimensions: Length 16" Width 18" Height 19" It has a shelf below the seat. Special Tools :Normal basket weaving tools plus a large towel. Any special tools will be provided. Your Own Project Tom Holtkamp All Levels Class $70.00 TH2B Bring your own project! Bring a chair, a stool, or a rocker that needs a cane seat or back. Make sure it is in good condition. You need to have an address so that we can exchange pictures and messages. I must see your project (via picture) so that a determination of materials can be decided. This is your chance to get that project done that you have been putting off for years. These projects must use cane, no rush or splint, please! Dimensions: Special Tools: Normal basket weaving tools plus a large towel. Any special tools will be provided A Medallion Stool Tom Holtkamp All Levels Class $80.00 Kits $70.00 TH2C This is a small square stool with a wooden medallion in the center. The medallion is finished the same as the stool, a dark cherry. You can place anything on the medallion that you desire such as a school logo, an initial or special design. The surround is traditional seven-step caning. It is woven using narrow binder cane. You will learn to center the medallion and how to plan the seven-step surround. The one shown is a square medallion. A round and oblong medallion will be available. The picture shows an Indiana University logo. It is easier than you think and also fun. Dimensions: 14" wide by 14" deep and 12" high Square stool finished in cherry Special Tools - Normal basket weaving tools plus a large towel. Any special tools will be provided. A Child s Rocker or Chair in Cane Tom Holtkamp All Levels Class $75.00 Kits $65.00 TH2D Saturday August 15 9AM - 6PM Choose either a child's chair or rocker and do the seat using cane. The chair and rocker are great gifts for a baby or a toddler. Children love either of them, although the rocker seems to be a favorite. The herringbone weave is traditional. Other patterns such as porch, diamond, and inverted diamond will be available. This is a great project Dimensions: 15" wide by 12" deep and 23" high at the back. Gooseberry Swing Gail Hutchinson Intermediate Class $80.00 Kit $56.00 GH2 Saturday August 15 9AM - 6PM Fun fun technique basket! Learn 2 x 2 twill, 1-2 twill, three rod-wale with a step-up, and overlays. Hand shaping will be stressed. A beautiful hand carved oak Indian swing handle finishes this basket. 7 Classes Saturday, August 15 Woven Bracelet Susan Twombly All Levels Class $75.00/Silver $90.00/Gold-filled $82.00/Mixed ST2A/B Saturday August 15 9 AM - 3 PM Limit 4 students Group A Saturday August 15 10:30 AM - 5 PM Limit 4 students Group B We will assign students to either session of this class This lovely woven bracelet was designed by Linda Chandler of Lawrence, IN. Students will learn thebasic principles of wire weaving and will learn variations which will dramatically change a bracelet's appearance giving different looks with the same technique. Class members will learn the properties of precious metal wire, the basic skills of wire wrapping, how to manipulate wire to create the woven look, how to size bracelets, and to create the clasp. When you wear your completed bracelet, no one will believe you made it yourself! Shaping will be stressed. A beaded accent is added for a flare at the handle ends. Color choices will be available for the woven design, Gretchen border and the beads as well as the beautiful bases.. Finish by learning and understanding the Gretchen border! Dimensions: 16 1/2" L x 9 1/2" W x 6 1/2" H Tools needed: Basic basketry tools Licorice Karen Griffith Intermediate (8 Hours) Class $65.00 Kit $60.00 KG2A Licorice begins on a 12" double slotted base with a natural inside wall and black outside wall accented with a cross-stitched design. Large black stoneware handles finish the basket. Shaping is stressed. Dimensions: 16.5" Diameter x 10" High 7

Woven in all black reed the basket is finished with a beautiful Japanese rim and embellished with natural bone beads. Dimensions: 7" Diameter x 5" High Coiling with Reed Susan Billingsley All Levels Class $45.00 Kit $35.00 SB2 Learn to coil this small beauty with materials you probably already have...round REED! Project begins on a walnut slice and uses wax linen and round reed. Embellish randomly with ribbon yarn. Reed is dyed and painted. Two color designs offered. Rust & Turquoise or Moss Green & Purple. Dimensions: 5" x 4" Classes Sunday, August 16 Basket Weave Bracelet Susan Twombly Intermediate Class $75.00/Silver $90.00/Gold-filled $85.00/Mixed ST3A Sunday June 29 9 AM - 1 PM Limit 5 students Must have taken at least one previous bracelet class Class members will learn the properties of precious metal wire, the intermediate skills of wire wrapping, how to size bracelets, and to create the clasp. Students will be given other patterns as will as learn to create their own patterns to weave other bracelets. It is important to note that students will not be able to finish this bracelet in class. All material to complete the bracelet will be provided. Dimensions: Sized to fit your wrist Bangle Bracelet Susan Twombly Intermediate Class $65.00/Silver $85.00/Gold-filled $75.00/Mixed ST3B Sunday June 29 1 PM - 5 PM Limit 5 students Must have had at least one previous precious wire class with Sue Twombly Class members will review the basic principles of wire weaving. They will also learn how to make variations to change a bracelet's appearance. Class members will perfect their basic skills of wire wrapping, how to manipulate wire to create the bangle look, how to size bracelets, and to create the clasp. 9 Classes Sunday, August 16 Vanity Stool in Porch Weave Tom Holtkamp All Levels Class $85.00 Kit $75.00 TH3A Sunday August 16 9AM - 6PM This is a vanity bench in cherry finish woven in a traditional porch weave using medium binder cane. It is easy! It is fast! It is beautiful.. Dimensions: 21" wide 11.5" deep 21" high Special Tools: Normal basket weaving tools are required plus a large towel. Adirondack Lace (A form of porch weave) Tom Holtkamp All Levels Class $85.00 Kit $75.00 TH3B Adirondack Lace is traditionally used on the backs of Adirondack chairs and rockers. It is woven using narrow binder cane. This is not difficult and the results are fantastic. This is traditional splint weaving. The bench is oak with a natural finish.. Dimensions: 18" wide 16" deep 19" high Special Tools: Normal basket weaving tools plus a large towel A Touch of Class A Little Deco Tom Holtkamp All Levels Class $85.00 Kit $75.00 TH3C This vanity bench is unusual because it combines Shaker Tape with narrow binder cane. It is an Art-Deco design. It is a modified porch weave. A choice of colors will be available in the tape.. Dimensions: 21" wide by 11.5" deep and 21" high. This is a vanity bench finished in cherry. The seat is 18". Weave a trash can for each room. Learn a simple design element with overlays and three rod-wale with a stepup. Learn to attach round reed spokes and then weave with dyed cane. Finish with a three part braided border. Then let the creative juices flow! 10 Classes Sunday, August 16 Cedar Treasures Pam Talsky Intermediate Class $ PT3A Learn the joy of weaving with hand harvested and prepared western red and Alaskan yellow cedar bark gathered by the instructor from Thorne Bay Alaska! With this basket you will learn traditional Haida techniques for preparation and weaving with cedar. Special focus is placed on the unique style of Haida twinning and adding in of weavers. Plaited weaving with a continuous 2/2 twill pattern makes for a lovely weave. The solid woven bottom and beaded accent make this a perfect basket to store your treasures! Materials included: Hand harvested and preparred Alaskan Yellow and western red cedar and a large selection of beads to personalize!
