1 Students should bring: rubber gloves Workshops Georgia Gourd Show November 18-20, 2011 FRIDAY AFTERNOON 1:00-5:00 PM FPM1: Bamboo Handle with Natural Rim Material Instructor: Ellen Tatum Cost: $30.00 Max. Students: 12 Description: Students will learn how to successfully use leather dyes, attach a rim that is made from natural materials, using a new technique that covers the holes made for attaching the rim materials and how to attach a bamboo handle. Teacher will furnish: leather dyes, gourds, rim materials, bamboo handles, needles and waxed thread for attaching the rim, written instructions. Students should bring: hair dryer or heat gun FPM2: Gourd Bowl with Natural Embellishments Instructor: Mary Segreto mary@mardigourds.com Cost: $40.00 Description: With a gourd as your canvas, you will be using transparent, nontoxic ink dyes to add color, and embellish the rim using a variety of natural fibers, pods, and beads. Safe methods for cleaning gourds will be covered. Teacher will furnish: prepared gourd, written instructions, all material for embellishments. FPM3: Woodburned Santa Portrait Max Students 20 Description: Learn the techniques of fine wood burning: how to create fine lines that are smooth and even, to shading to pull out the depths of your wood burning. You will also be using Welburn Gourd Master Ink Dyes for the deep jewel tones of this gourd. Students MUST bring: Woodburner with your favorite blade tip similar to a Detail Master 5A or 1A or Razor tip medium Screw, and your favorite rounding writing tip like a Detail Master 6A or Razor Tip Writing Pen. Students should bring: heat gun, paint brushes. Teacher wil furnish: gourd, tassle, epoxy, ink dyes, acrylic paints, patterns, written instructions.
2 FPM4: Gourd Basketry Hairy Technique Instructor: Susan Nonn Cost $45.00 Max Students: 15 Description: Do you love lots of color? Do you love texture contrasts? This workshop incorporates basketry techniques woven on the outside of a gourd. The hairy technique allow for color and texture changes while still being able to hide all the ends of the reed. Weaving on the outside of a gourd gives a clean inside look. Students MUST bring: basket scissors or pruning shears, bucket for soaking weaving material, spray bottle of water, old towel Teacher will furnish: cleaned gourd, ½ pound of spaced dyed reed per student, #3 reed (for spokes), written instructions and sample gourds SATURDAY MORNING 8:00-12:00 AM SAAM1: Relief Butterfly Gourd Class time 8-12 am Saturday Max Students 20 Description: In this class you will create this beautiful Relief Butterfly Vessel. You will learn tricks on cutting out your butterflies as well as creating a pitting texture with your Dremel to accentuate your butterflies. You will also be working with Gourd Master Ink dyes and acrylic paints. Students MUST bring: Wood burner with favorite sturdy blade tip like a Detail Master 5A pen. A Dremel or carver with a #191 small ball bit. (Bits will be available for purchase during class if needed) Students should bring: gloves, mask, favorite brushes, and a heat gun. Teacher will furnish: gourd, pattern, instruction, ink dyes and acrylic metallic paints, gloves, paint brushes and heat guns to share. SAAM2: Shelf Sitter Santa Instructor: Billie Strickland mimibillie35@yahoo.com Class time 8-12 am Saturday Cost $35.00 Description: Christmas is coming!! Learn to paint a realistic face for this cute Santa. We will paint the gourds and attach to make a shelf sitter. Students should bring: acrylic paint brushes (#1 liner, #8 flat, deerfoot stippler, ¾ or 1 flat), tracing and transfer paper, water container, palette pad, paper towels, masking tape, stylus. Teacher will furnish: gourds, paint, screw eyes, ribbon, pattern and photo. Loaner brushes will be available.
3 SAAM3: Jewelry Box Gourd with Padded Lining Instructor: Mary Segreto Class time 8:00-3:00 NOTE-THIS CLASS WILL LAST MOST OF THE DAY WITH A BREAK FOR LUNCH Max Students: 12 Description: Create a beautiful covered container to hold jewelry or treasures. Learn how to create a raised, stenciled design, then add an oxidized metal effect, using safe, water based products. Complete by adding padded lining for a touch of luxury. Students should bring: wood burner, heat gun or hair dryer. Some extra tools will be available for class use, but bringing your own helps keeps the class moving Teacher will furnish: all materials including a prepared canteen gourd. SAAM4: Multi Technique Blue Bird Bowl (Experienced Carvers) Instructor: Laraine Short agourdpainter@aol.com Class time 8:00-4:00 NOTE-THIS IS AN ALL DAY CLASS WITH A BREAK FOR LUNCH Cost $75.00 Max students 12 Description: This will be a fun class with detail carving, wood burning and painting. You may take the woven rim class by Angie Craft, or leave the top plain. I will cover many techniques for you to have a more finished looking piece of art. Students MUST bring: Rotary carver with small sanding drum, ball, cone bits, and diamond burrs, and a wood burner with a skew tip. Sandpaper 320 grit, a dust mask is a must. Teacher will furnish: cleaned cut gourd, paint, painting supplies, instructions, pictures and extra needed supplies. SAAM5: Under the Surface Instructor: Ellen Tatum ewtatum@bellsouth.net Class time 8-12 am Saturday Cost $40.00 Description: Students will learn the art of etching with dental bits and a new technique for applying a rim using sea grass. Students will learn how to transfer patterns successfully and should create a finished project to take home and enjoy. Students MUST bring: Dremel tool with adjustable bit, proper breathing mask, gloves to prevent dye from staining hands. Dremel tool is only a recommendation if you have another brand that you used to please feel free to bring your own. Teacher will furnish: Inks for coloring, dental bits for etching, heat gun, gourds prepared for class, patterns and written instructions.
4 SATURDAY AFTERNOON 1:00-5:00 PM SAPM1: Christmas Ornament Class time 1-5 pm Saturday Cost $55.00 Max students 20 Description: In this class you will have the opportunity to use your creativity with 2 pages of ornament patterns and ideas! With lots of beads, ribbons, Gold leaf, paints and dyes, you will be able to create some beautiful one of a kind ornaments. You will each get 3 large gourd ornaments that already have a cemented eye hook and is ready to hang when finished. Students MUST bring: wood burner with favorite blade tip pen, heat gun (if you have one) Teacher will furnish: prepared gourds, 2 pages of patterns to take home with you, carbon and Press N Seal, ink dyes, acrylic paints, Gold leaf and glue, textured snow resins. SAPM2: Japanese Kumihimo: Heavily Beaded Braid Instructor: Kathy James klaymaker@aol.com Class time 1-5 pm Saturday Cost $15.00 Max Students 16 Description: Using a portable foam disk, students will set up their loom for this easy 16-cord braid. You will learn how to add 8/0 seed beads as you braid. Beginners should come to class on time to learn basics; intermediate braiders can arrive at 1:30. Project makes a lovely rope necklace or gourd rim braid. Students MUST bring: 6 foam loom and 16 plastic bobbins (available at show for $14.40), favorite scissors. Teacher will furnish: cordage, choice of beads, needle to take home, end caps/clasp, written instructions. Students should bring: latex gloves and apron. SAPM3: Western Leather Tooled Egg Ornament Instructor: Sandy Taylor calicocat@bellsouth.net Class time 1-5 pm Saturday Cost $35.00 Description: Learn how to burn a faux, yet realistic, leather tooled look on an egg gourd for an ornament. We will work with a pattern transfer, or you can free hand draw to fit the shape and size of the egg. Some wood burning experience required. Students MUST bring: Variable temperature wood burner, with two pens a medium skew and a large ball tip. Teacher will furnish: A cleaned, prepared egg gourd, patterns, ink pens, ink dyes, and ornament brackets.
5 SUNDAY MORNING 8:00 12:00 AM SUNAM1: Birdnest Rim Instructor: Angie Craft Class time 8-12 am Sunday Cost $22.00 Description: This class will teach you to weave a great free form Birdnest Rim. This is a great rim to finish off the carving class that Laraine Short is offering, or any other gourd you would like to put it on. Student MUST bring: scissors, old towel, spray bottle, bucket..a great fun loving attitude! Student should bring: tapestry needle, a prepared gourd (if you don t have a gourd, there will be some available for sale for $5 at the class) Teacher will furnish: All weaving material. Instructions for preparing your gourd will be ed to you once you sign up for the class if you plan on bringing your own gourd. SUNAM2: Apoxie Sculpt Small Critters Instructor: Sandy Taylor calicocat@bellsouth.net Class time 8-12 am Sunday Cost $47.00 Max students 10 Description: Learn how to sculpt small creatures with the very versatile sculpting medium- Apoxie Sculpt. We will be doing a variety of small critters such as dragonflies, butterflies, frogs and lizards. No gourds will be used as the critters will be made separately and after they are dried and paintedthey can be added as embellishments. Students should bring: small empty cans, small rounded plastic bowls, curved item to mold shapes on, a small box to carry your pieces as they may not be dry at end of class. Teacher will furnish: 1 lb. of Apoxie Sculpt per student (a $16.00 value), clipart to study, sculpting tools to share, a small tutorial, some paints to use if time permits.
6 SUAM3: Gourd Basketry Techniques-Everything but the Kitchen Sink Instructor: Susan Nonn Class time: 8-?? THIS IS WILL AN ALL DAY OR MOST OF THE DAY CLASS WITH A BREAK FOR LUNCH Cost $65.00 Max Students 15 Description: Using a gourd as a form, students will learn different ways to weave around the gourd surface. Techniques will include weaving, twining, three-rod wale, and, my favorite, hairy weaving. We will also create undulating hills and valleys to add interest to the gourd basket. The gourd will be embellished with beads and natural materials. Students MUST bring: basket scissors or pruning shears, bucket for soaking weaving materials, spray bottle for water, bath towel. Teacher will furnish: Cleaned prepared martin gourd, ½ lb of dyed reed per student, #3 reed for spokes, dyed seagrass, yarn, wire, mizuhiki, leather lace, jute and beads, written instructions. SUAM4: Japanese Washi Gourd Liner Instructor: Kathy James klaymaker@aol.com Class time 9-12 am Sunday Cost $13.00 Max Students 10 Description: Line or cover a favorite gourd or gourd container with a colorful layer of strong Japanese washi. Students will learn to work with patterned handmade paper, afterwards cutting and applying small designs to mask cut edges. Take home handouts for project plus covered egg gourds. Students MUST bring: your own cleaned gourd bowl, 9 or less across OR a small/medium whole gourd that can be covered using an 18x24 sheet of handmade washi paper. Students should bring: sharp scissors and a soft ½ -3/4 brush for water cleanup glue/finish. Teacher will furnish: washi, glue and finishing medium, extra scissors and brushes, plus a handfan for quick drying of wet acrylic finish, handouts.
7 SUNDAY AFTERNOON 12:30-3:30 PM SUPM1: Blue gourd Bowl with Decorative Paste Instructor: Billie Strickland Class time 12:30-3:30 pm Sunday Cost $35.00 Description: Learn to make a dimensional design on a gourd using paste. Students should bring: acrylic painting brushes- ¾ or 1 flat, small filbert brush, tracing and transfer paper, paper towels, water container, palette pad, masking tape, stylus, palette knives. Teacher will furnish: gourd, paint, decorating paste and tubes, pattern and instructions. SUNAM2: On the Forest Floor Students MUST bring: scissors, old towel, spray bottle. Instructor: Angie Craft icraftlady@gmail.com Class time 12:30-3:30 pm Sunday Cost $37.00 Description: This class will teach you to attach an antler to a simple coiled rim. Project may vary from picture. All materials on the gourd will be things you can find in the forest on a walk, or natural materials. You will also try out The Gourd Dye. We ll walk this gourd through the forest to see what we come up with! Student should bring: tapestry needle, apron or old shirt, a great fun loving attitude! Teacher will furnish: prepared gourd, antler, rim materials, embellishments, waxed linen, colorant, gloves. SUPM3: Faux Turquoise Class time 12:30-3:30 pm Sunday Max Students 20 Description: In this class, you will learn a new technique that Carrie Dearing and her mother came up with to create a Faux Turqouise that can be duplicated on any piece of gourd. Ever have a problem with finding that perfect color of turquoise to inlay? Or that perfect cabochon size or shape to inlay? Ever wanted to have a beautiful turquoise pendant or earrings, but didn t want the weight or the cost? Now you can have the look of inlaid turquoise that YOU can customize! Students must bring: wood burner with favorite blade tip like Detail Master 5A pen, paint brushes, heat gun. Teacher will furnish: gourd shards, gourd pendants, instructions, resins, paints and ink dyes. Will have heat guns, brushes and gloved, it needed.
