1 2016 Virginia Gourd Festival Class Descriptions SATURDAY AFTERNOON, OCTOBER 29 TH CLASSES Title: Flaming Foliage Leaf Bowl Instructor: Reagan Bitler. Level: Intermediate Fee: $45.00 Number of students: Maximum 10, minimum 4 godahavom_gourds@yahoo.com Telephone: (717) Class Description: In this intense class, students will create a unique lidded bowl. Students will wood burn, cut and color their gourd to represent the brilliant colors of the Virginia fall foliage. The bowl will be topped with a student created faux acorn embellishment. The class is designed for those students with previous experience using a gourd saw. Instructor will provide: Gourd. Ink dyes. Embellishment materials. Student will provide: A variable temperature wood burner. Wood burner tips/nibs: sharp skew tip or a favorite tip for burning dark lines. A gourd mini saw and extra blades. A heat tool (not a hair dryer). Title: Hummers In My Garden Instructor: Sherry Briscoe Level: Intermediate Fee: $50.00 Number of students: Maximum 12, minimum 2 giraffeslaff@bellsouth.net Telephone: (336) Address: 157 Kelly Road, Reidsville, NC Class Description: In this class, students will learn how to use GourdMaster (GM) Stick n Burn to lay out and burn their design. When they complete the burning, they will remove the remaining Stick n Burn, condition the gourd with Formula 49 and color the background. They will then learn techniques to apply and blend the GM Transparent Acrylics and Metallic Inks, and heat set the colors. They will create the design area for the stippling using painters tape and will stipple that area. To complete their projects they will seal their gourds with GM Varnish or Protecting Wax. IMPORTANT: Students are expected to be familiar with the operation of their wood burners and rotary tools in order to allow adequate time to complete this gourd project. 2 Instructor will provide: A cleaned, cut and sanded gourd. GM Transparent Acrylics, Metallic Inks, Varnish, Protecting Wax, and Stick n Burn with pre-printed designs. Brush basins. Extra scissors. Paper towels. Q-tips. Fine-tip Micro brushes. Felt squares. Vinyl gloves. Tutorial with color photo of completed project in a plastic sheet cover. 2 heat guns for those who may not have one. Student will provide: An adjustable/variable temperature wood burner with pen/tip to transfer the design to their gourd. A rotary tool (Dremel or equivalent) with small and medium size ball burrs. Scissors. Heat gun (not a hair dryer). Apron/smock to protect clothing. Title: Gourd Yarn Bowl Instructor: Claudia Hill Fee: $40.00 Number of students: Maximum 8, minimum 1 briahill79@gmail.com Class Description: Students will be creating a gourd bowl to hold and dispense their favorite yarns. Student designs will loosely be based on the instructor s designs shown in the picture. Instructor will provide a weighted gourd bowl. Students are free to use inks, paints and/or wood burning techniques to create their yarn bowls. Guidance and instruction for all techniques will be given so that students can create a unique piece for themselves or for a gift. Instructor will provide: All materials including weighted gourd bowl, paints, inks and designs. Student will provide: Apron. Optional: a variable temperature wood burner with a blade tip. Creativity! Title: Metallic Chip Carved Oil Lamp Instructor: Brenda Riggs. Level: Beginning Intermediate Class Identifier: LS (Learn The Skill) *Depending on student s skill level, student may or may not finish the project in class. A tutorial will distributed allowing students to finish the project at home. One side will have a radiating chip carved pattern and the other side will showcase a wood burned and dyed floral design. 3 Student will provide: A wood burner, a variable temperature wood burner is recommended but a hobby style one will work. Wood burner tips/nibs: skew pen for lines and a small and medium ball tip burn pen. A Dremel or comparable carving tool with carbide structured ball burr and #109 and #107 ball bits. Adjustable compass. Measuring tape. Scissors. Exacto knife. Heat tool, not a hair dryer. Apron/protective clothing. U Palm Gouges: #8 X 3/8 inch; #8 X ¼ inch; #11 X ¼ inch. Ramelson and Flexcut are the best gouge brands. Craft stores do not carry them. Ramelson gouges can be purchased from Turtle Feathers at Flexcut gouges can be purchased from Flexcut Amazon sells both brands Mountain Wood Carvers Title: Gingko Leaves Instructor: Ellen Tatum Fee: $35.00 Number of students: Maximum 12, minimum 1 ewtatum@bellsouth.net Telephone: (770) Class Description: Students will learn how to create the beautiful Gingko Leaves that travel around the gourd bowl. This is a beautiful addition to your gourd collection and you will gain the carving skills that can be used in other projects. The project can be done by a beginner but the beginner should have practiced using the carving bits. The Intermediate and Advanced gourder will enjoy creating the intricate patterns in the leaves. Instructor will provide: Ink dyes. Patterns and transfer paper. Scissors. Pencils. Tape. All set-up and clean-up supplies. Instructional tutorial. Student will provide: Cleaned, cut and dyed 7 inch 8 inch gourd. A rotary tool (such as a Dremel or comparable carving tool) and carving bits. Dust mask. 4 Class Description: Learn to create shading with pyrography on a gourd. Participants will transfer a furnished leaf pattern to the gourd, wood-burn the outline, stipple and color the background and shade the double leaf design. Students will also learn how to create the appearance of stitching. This class will focus on creating multiple values of shading with a wood burner utilizing low heat. A detailed discussion of shading techniques along with an overview of pen tips and their uses will be conducted. Students may not finish the project in the allotted class time, but full instructions will be provided and all techniques will be demonstrated in class. Instructor will provide: Detailed instructions in tutorial format. Outline pattern. A shading guide. Transfer paper. Pencils and pens. Ink and leather dye. Applicators. White paint pens. A gourd protective finish. Student will provide: A clean, craft-ready gourd (whole or cut) that will accommodate the 5 X 6 inch double leaf pattern. A variable temperature wood burner with a skew tip, writing tip, medium ball tip, shading tip (large ball-1/8 to 3 mm, or a bent shader) and any other tips you have (we will discuss their uses). Breathing mask or respirator. Eye protection. A desire to learn about pyrography! Title: 3D Relief Carving Spiral with Filigree Background Instructor: Susan Zanella Fee: $35.00 Number of students: Maximum 12, minimum 3 susanzanella@hotmail.com Class Description: Come learn or perfect your three dimensional carving skills! Using a fun spiral pattern, we will learn how to make rounded objects pop out from the gourd as well as how to filigree the background. If you would like, colorful stones will be available to use as an insert into the center of the spiral. Instructor will provide: A cut and clean thick carving gourd. All supplies for pattern transfer. Stone inserts. Tutorial. Student will provide: A rotary tool (such as a Dremel) and appropriate collets. All burrs. Instruction on using special carving tools will be included in this class. Instructor will provide: Pumpkin. Carving tools. Tutorial. Student will provide: An apron or cover up to protect clothing. In this class students will cut out and mold a piece of leather to create a custom fitted mask for their own faces. Students will color and decorate their masks with inks, dyes and designs of their own choosing. While waiting for the masks to dry, students will learn basic leather carving techniques by picking out an image and transferring the image to a new piece of leather. Instructor will provide: Leather. Carving tools. Mask molds. Paints. Dyes. Marble. Mallets. Cutting boards. Knives. Student will provide: An apron or cover-up to protect clothing. Title: Two Milk Lotions and A Luffa Soap Instructor: Valerie Rountree. Fee: $55.00 Number of students: Maximum 10, minimum 5 valerierountree@vrsoap.com Class Description: In this class, students will learn how to make two bottles of all natural milk lotion out of pasteurized cows milk and one exfoliating Luffa Soap. MILK LOTIONS AND LUFFA SOAP CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
6 Upon completion of the two projects, each student will take home one 9.60 oz bottle and one 2.55 oz bottle of milk Lotion plus one 3.75 oz size bar of soap.
